As unoffical forum historian I have noticed that DJ AM is an often cited figure and often the center of many heated forum discussion, many of which caused by people who have no idea what on earth their talking about. I have taken it upon myself to compile factual knowledge about him, quoted directly from him via posts on this very board in hopes that mabye some will learn from his wisdom, and more importantly so that I have easy acces to this reference guide for future quoting endevors.
I have included every quote DJ AM (username DJ AM) ever posted on this site as well as linked to the thread itself so further research can be done as to the context of which the quote was said and to whom the quote was directed at.

Fair play to the guy he's pretty good at what he does, and dosn't claim to be anything he's not, and from his posts on here
he's got a great outlook on what he does and how fortunate he is to be doign hwat he loves, and i think that commands
respect.
But i think people need to realise that there's a whole stack of people doing what he does the world over - the Ninjatune
guys have been doing this kinda of mash up for years, and 90% of the London DJ scene has been this eclectic & mashup style
over the last 10 years, starting out with events like the Heavenly Social where the Chemical Brothers cut their teeth and so
on..... People Like Optimo in Glasgow do the same.. it's Not a DJ AM phenominan, he's just a lucky that did the hardwork and
is now in a place where he can be brought up to the profile he has and earn the money he is."
WORD UP! 1st off I never said I am breaking down SH*T as far as barriers. Im just DJing like people have for years. I just
LOVE to DJ and would do it for money or not. The money is cool but NOT why i do it. I am simply a guy who can't ever be
around a 1200 and not touch it. Thats just me. "I'm an addict.. Addicted to music.. maybe its a habit? I gotta use it" I
respect ANY Dj who is doing it for the right reason. So many dudes wanna be Djs now cause its "cool" or whatever. I been doin
this since 1985 and will NEVER stop cause of money, peoples opinions or a web blog dissing me. I just laugh and go back to

serato.com
spelling... I was locked up in rehab when I was 16 and never finished high school.
Let me first address the mix. I did that live at the station. I was asked by DJ Echo to come in for the "12 days of Mixmas -
In the club day" as they call it, and to play ANYthing I wanted to, but to KINDA stick to the club theme. The whole point was
that the station was NOT rated at that time. Meaning they don't need to play Jibbs - Chain Hang Low or whatever song is big
at the time every 40 minutes (I don't work in radio so I don't know the details on how often they must play a song or
whatever. I just know what it sounds like to me so I rarely listen to radio). I do NOT DJ on the radio and that was the first
time in a LONG time I did. I was SO nervous to go there I could barely sleep the night before. I almost turned around in the
car on the way there I was so shook. Then I get there, and DJ Revolution is there!!!!!! He is like a super hero to me so that
just adds to the sweat beads falling off my dome. THEN he comes in the small ass room where I had to do the mix to peep while
I DJed. I was BUGGING!
Back to the issue of the mix sorry, the mix is a year old so I don't really remember what is on it. But lets look at the
track listing and I will tell you what is a "pre made mix" there are 34 songs on this list. There are 7 that ARE pre made and
they are
10) Janet Jackson vs. U2 (GHP MASHUP)
16) crooklyn clan “wanna jump”
19) Jackson 5 “I want you back” (MASHUP)
22) DJ kool “let me clear my funk” (breakwax old school blend)
27) kelis “old school milkshake” (AV8)
29) black eyed peas “my booty humps” (Kevin Scott RMX)
30) My Turkey Humps (MASHUP)
The rest are just songs.
The 90s hip hop part was cause that is what IIIIIIIII wanted to play. If you didn't like it sorry. if you thought it was
predictable sorry. Simply turn it off. I don't remember putting a gun to ANYones head saying "BUMP THIS OR I BLAST YOU" I did
that cause I am old! hahaha A lot of kids that listen to power 106 have NOT heard Tribe or KRS. That is what hip hop is to
me. And I want them to know there is something OTHER then JIBBS! I think its SELFISH to think I was gonna go on the radio and
DJ for 30+ year old DJs who have heard all this REAL hip hop before. I wanted to do my best to put a LIL something for
everyone and still be me AND make myself happy. That is what DJing is about to me. The truth is.. Where else are you gonna
hear that stuff anymore? I learned about 60s and 70s bands from my friends older brothers growing up. I am just trying to
pass the torch of hip hop the way I was passed classic rock.
Let me address some specific comments here..
DeezNotes - In response to "As much as I like it, no one where I'm from could get away with something like that. Maybe on the
cross-over station, but no one I know listens to that station since it's not as diverse."
I wanted you to know the REASON of song selection was that it was a NON rated time of the season for the radio show. They
don't play what I played normally. And also to answer your question, the way I organize my music is in iTunes. For some play
lists I just put a bunch of bangers I wanna play in it. For others I sort by the NUMBER ADDED to the play list, then move em
around in the order I want. So I can have a 88 bpm song next to a 160 one I wanna play it with...
Sid - Thank you homie.. You rule hahahaah
Xavierjoshua - First off I will REP and say, I like Madonna. I like the song Holiday. I actually like a LOT of Madonna songs.
I don't think she's a pop icon cause she makes songs that suck. You forgot to mention that People Mag asked me the top
HOLIDAY party songs FOR THEIR READERS... PEOPLE MAGAZINE asked me bro.. FOR THEIR READERS.. FOR THE HOLIDAYS! I am done
replying to you now.
El Presidente - "if somebody wants to play 50 cent all night, god bless them, I just won't show up"
WORD UP!! Could not agree with you more homie. DJs SHOULD be themselves and play what they want. AT THE SAME time, when I am
asked "What r u doin tonight?" I say "I'm workin" yes.. "I'm workin" WHY? CAUSE ITS WORK!!!! Its not PLAY. I don't get to
play ONLY what I want. I wish I had it like that. I am not the only person in the room. People come to dance. Like someone
said earlier. I did something with deep dish. There were all house fans there. I don't really play house. WHY they booked
me.. shiiiiiiit I dunno. But You think im NOT gonna take the money and do my best to make people DANCE and be happy? Your
wrong if you think that. I did my BEST, got paid and left. THAT IS WHAT WORK IS! So what I am saying... it's a job dudes.
Here.. Since some of you seem to think I am a good DJ I will give you my formula. Since I stuck to this my WORK career went
up and up.
part 1 - Girls...
There you have it. That's it. Girls rule. I like girls for many reasons hahaha But the bottom line is they are VITAL to a
dancefloor... Unless your at Rage (gay club in LA)
What, are you gonna play onyx, big daddy kane and have a sword fight? Its almost 2007. In LA at least (and I think most
everywhere) girls in their 20s make up nightlife. They don't know that shit. Old school hip hop to them is Biggie. I was
playing Special Ed and a girl walked up and asked "Hey, are you gonna play any hip hop?" To entertain myself I said "Like
what?" She said "Ummmm I dunno like some J lo or Puffy" THIS IS WHERE WERE AT PEOPLE! And this happens AT WORK!! I am WORKING
for a promoter who PAYS me to make people LIKE THAT CHICK HAPPY AND DANCE. So that's my job. If I wanna play my music I do it
at my own club or at home. So, I focus on the girls. Now THIS is where the being a GOOD DJ kicks in.. For ME, I could play
Fergie for her or J Lo. And I know she would be thrilled. I also know the radio and every top 40 club plays those songs. But
I chose MADONNA.. Why? Cause I LIKE MADONNA! And I know SHE knows it. And I know she will still dance. Now I did my job AND
made the promoter and myself happy.
part 2 - Majority
This is actually part 1.2 BUT majority rules. HOPEFULLY you don't have a sword fight on the dancefloor (all dudes) and the
door guy is letting in 1 guy for every 2 girls. If that is the case its allllll part 1. But its all about the genre. You
wanna make the MORORITY of people there happy. I used to throw on a record I have never played and then sit and COUNT how
many people came on the dancefloor (PAUSE) and how many left. I would then gauge my next song based off the genre of that
record. I just want the majority of the floor dancing, not leaving or sitting down. You make the place go NUTS and dance and
scream, you ask for a raise. There you have it.
DJJOHNNYM - Spinbad is one of the ILLEST of ALL time to me. He made what is STiLL the greatest mix CD ever made. If you don't
have it you are sleeping. And guess what? Its all 80s (Madonna is on it). Its so smartly done and creative it makes me want
to quit and cry. It made my arm hairs stand up and it STILL does AND its MAD OLD. He is also one of the funniest dudes I ever
known and does not get the shine he deserves. But WORD UP Johnny M. Spin is the illest! Also do NOT sleep on DJ Eli.
EVERYTHING Eli makes is hot, and DJ Craze is still the greatest DJ who ever lived to me. I got to see/meet him the other
night here in LA. W O W is all I can say. That dude is not human.
DJ Kagen - You sound like the girls at the opening of Missy - Gossip Folks. Here are the lyrics
"Yo, yo yo move out of the way
We got missy elliott coming through
Girl that is missy elliott she lost a lot of weight
Girl I heard she eats one cracker a day
Oh well I heard the bitch was married to tim and started fucking with trina
I heard the bitch got hit with three zebras and a monkey
I cant stand the bitch no way"
You don't know ME nor does your girl and I don't think you know my ex either. I won't go into details, cause I myself like to
keep my personal life, PERSONAL but you have no idea what your talking about and should prolly stop. It's passive words like
this that start rumors that are HURTFUL to other people. I am just very happy I don't live my own life like that.
Bottom line I am a DJ. I said this before and will say it again. I am no "GREAT DJ" I am just a DJ. A REALLY lucky and
blessed one at that. I use Serato to the fullest I can. Does that make me a fake DJ? Not to me. I dug for years, I scratched
(sounding like shit) till I had calluses on my fingers. I paid my dues and worked HARD for where I am. No page 6 LIE will
ever take that away. So keep talkin, keep hatin and I will keep jumping outta bed at 6am to try a mix I just thought of that
will hopefully bring joy to a dancefloor and make my friends go "AWWWWWWWWW SHIT!!!!!" That is my job and I love it.
"Starve the ego - Feed the soul" - DJ AM

Then work out the timing to make it flow and sound good. Then practice it so you know where to move the pitch as wonderwall
was not recorded to a click track so it sways off beat. When did people forget, thats what a DJ does. Last time I checked, we
actually MIX ourselves.
serato.com
and then i was gonna go to the telly and sleep. The plan b propmoters said "I dont care if he cant get there till 1am! We
want him" So I was actually totally on time. It didnt cross my mind for a sec "Wait, people may buy tickets and show up and
I'm not there till 1am???" One thing about me is I like to ALWAYS earn my money. I have done MANY parties where I am
background music, and get paid. But nothing feels better then when you rip a room apart and the promoter gives you a check
and says THANK YOU! you KILLED it. We all had so much fun." Makes me wanna brush my shoulders, head to the bank and go
practice for next time. Sorry if you got a half ass show homie.
duh, YES I DO! I am no superhero of creativity. I come up with something that works, and I do it. Straight up. Its not about
me, my ego or the 1-2% of people in the club that heard my Power 106 mix, know what serato is OR are Djs. Its about the
people dancing. I want the majority to have fun. If hip hop is working, I should prolly stick there, THEN try to push into
somehting cool to really get em'. that can back fire though ahhaha it has many times. Anyway, I woulda done the Oasis as my
lil "look, im not some fake ass celeb Dj, I swear i really can kinda mix a lil" and chicks like that song (as do I) but some
hugge roided up security guard ran into the booth saying TURN IT OFF NOOOOOOOOOOOOOW so i did, and left. Jeah

I am using FS2 right now and I'm NOT happy.. Everyone I talk to says Serato is the deal so here I am. But I downloaded the
software just to peep it out and imported my whole iTunes lib (which CRASHED when done with FS) but I decided I want to REDO
my iTunes and clean it up (get rid of stuff I will never play, fix BPMs and genres) so now I want to TOTALLY uninstall Serato
and start over BUT I am NOT really a Mac guy... I just bought a G4 to use for digital DJing. Can anyone tell me how to do
that? Thanks...

everyone on this board and I NEVER said "I rule" or that I am better then anyone. People hate or love on ALL of us and
there's nothing we can do. I just accept it cause I know I am 100% powerless over others actions. So, all I really CAN worry
about in life is my side of the street. I just keep DJing and doing what I think sounds good or will rock a crowd. I am
straight up the LUCKIEST guy alive. If I had my job that I have now, or not, I feel that way. 8 years ago I was strung out on
crack in my apartment with no power, no phone and barf stains all over the floor. I almost sold my turntables at one point!
But SOMEONE wanted me to live. And I made it out alive. All I can do is say THANK YOU G0D everyday that I am living and
getting to DJ in front of people. And on top of that, I get paid to do what I would be doing for free anyway. THAT ROOLZ!
I really respect the honesty here if its in my favor or not cause you guys know a lot more then I do. I'm straight up
flattered as fuck your even talking about me lol So, all that said.. I'm going back to practice! Jesus, I will be 33 years
old on March 30th and I still practice everyday since I had tables. Being a DJ ROOLZ!
By the way, in regards to the last post. I like to focus on the TRUTH in life... Fame, cash and status... has absolutely
NOTHING to do with who anyone is AS A PERSON. All that is outside shit that is shallow and shows what you got, not who you
are. I like toys and status like the next dude, but I like to look at WHO I AM not what I got. I sponsor 6 kids and help them
to stay sober. I don't litter. I try to be unselfish everyday and do some shit that helps someone else and does not benefit
me at all. I try to be 100% honest in everything I do and I THANK G0D I am alive everyday. And none of that makes me better
or worse. It just makes me ME.
HAHAH SORRY to get all serious but I guess I am in the mood. So hate, love... KEEP IT REAL! I am going to cut
just always fuckin FORGET to come here lol... Sorry my man :(

Break bread!!!!! I am not mad at bread. But that is not WHY I do this. I have been blessed enough not have not had to have a
reg job for almost 12 years now. All I have done for $ is do what I love. That = happiness.. And happiness = success. I am a
happy, blessed ass man. I worked as a diswasher at Denny's, I drilled the holes in bowling balls in a lil ass attic, I worked
at All American Burger. I AM HAPPY to take $ to do what I love.. THATS REAL!
Adam Michael
always said "find what you love to do so much you would do it for free.. Then find someone to pay you for it" and I did... I
will DJ till the day I die. Moms knows whats up
over and over and try so hard to get the cuts I heard and juggle moves. I just straight up LOVE to DJ. And I always have
since I first saw the one and only DJ Mighty Mi on the cut at his house in 1984. On another note, i think 1 DJ actually CAN
raise the price up for others. Maybe not on a international scale. But, in LA, when i finally grew some nuts and told some
promoters and party planners that I would NOT Dj for the amount they offered (only cause I knew other people were makin a
little more and that they were makin BANK and not breaking off the only entertainment in the whole joint as much as they
could) they dissed me. But I just went home and practiced. I just wanted to get better then everyone else (which never
happened but I tried!) Not at only cutting and juggles (which I suck at both) but at mixs that just SOUNDED good to me. I
loved Tom Petty growin up (I still do) so i would try to mix a Petty track over a beat and it sounded ehhhhhhhh but I knew it
wouldn't rock a crowd. So I kept thinkin who else I liked and tried and tried and what other recordf everyone else was NOT
playin. Then when any of my homies would come over was like the review board was in session. They would get all pissed cause
i would make em listen and listen to these weak ass mixs and transistions. Actually, I did that exact thing 2 days ago when
Kevin Scott came over to kick it. hahaha I guess I STILL do the same thing! I def aint some magical DJ nor am I better then
any other cat. I am just a LUCKY ass dude! I dunno man. Im just happy I'm getting paid to do what I love and make people
happy.. Amen

that the station was NOT rated at that time.

How bout you make one. Unlike any you heard before. You sit and go thru drums or instrumentals and find one that fits. Then work out the timing to make it flow and sound good. Then practice it so you know where to move the pitch as wonderwall
was not recorded to a click track so it sways off beat. When did people forget, thats what a DJ does. Last time I checked, we
actually MIX ourselves.

Thanks for the review! So you know I actually came to detroit to do a private party. That was it. It was from 9-12amand then i was gonna go to the telly and sleep.
Sorry if you got a half ass show homie.

hahaha man I feel like I can never win! if I do something i did (see previous posts) its "AM did the same shit" which, duh, YES I DO!
Jeah

Hey,I am using FS2 right now and I'm NOT happy..
Can anyone tell me how to do
that? Thanks...

Wow... Well, let me say this. I don't think I am better then ANY DJ out there at ALL. I ain't shit. I am a DJ likeeveryone on this board and I NEVER said "I rule" or that I am better then anyone.

WORD UP. I have always had cats that helped me along the way. I used to watch mad DMC and ITF videos and rewind emover and over and try so hard to get the cuts I heard and juggle moves.
Im just happy I'm getting paid to do what I love and make people
happy.. Amen

I took down that mix cause of bandwith issues. Plus, it wasn't my fav set I played hahaha YUP thats the 13" blackmacbook. And HELLS YES, all DJs should raise their rates if you feel you deserve more. For me after Djing the same club for 2
years, it was time to step it up. That was in 1997 though

In LA we usually DJ 4 hour sets,, 10pm till 2am (close) and I used to get to work at 9:45pm to set up, then basically practice the 1st hour while people were walking in. Well, at 10:15 I'd get the "PLAY BEYONCE CRAZY IN LOVE" and I'd say "Its 10:15, you will hear it later I promise" and of course the girl would frown (thinking its cute and i will fall for it) and I'd just go back to practicing. 10:30 she would walk by and look at me raising her eyebrows. 11pm she sends 2 of her friends up to ask for the same song shile she watchs to see my reaction (cause of course her ego let her think i was saying no to HER specifically) and I just look at the 1st girl and say "I told your friend, i will play it later" This is the reason I used to carry weak ass promo frisbee records in the back of my crate. Cause come 11:15pm when the 1st girl comes BACK (now with a few drinks in her) demanding I play it. I reach in the back of my crate, pull out a frisbee record and say "You want Beyonce??? Huh?? YOU REALLY WANT IT?? (pull out frisbee 12" and SMASH it over my kneee and hand her the 2 pieces) HERE MOFO, TAKE BEYONCE" they never come back. I have my man man Mike B to thank for this drunkgirl jukeing strategy.Quote:

To make matters worse that was the show where that really popular clip of him and jazzy jeff throwing the fuck down was filmed at :(

Was able to see AM in Aspen at belly up; -a small club. I remember it being pretty exciting at the time and knew it was something special. It was a typical AM set and was a lot of fun.

Once I year when this gets bumped I go back through those comments AM made and they still hold true. I think they should be required for any DJ breaking into their local scene and even long time DJs could use the info as well.

I was just listening to this earlier today....
Unreleased Mix #3: DJ AM Demo Mix w/ Kevin Scott (Summer 2005) www.djamlives.com
Messy and sloppy as fuck in some parts but showed the beginning of his style.
Thinking back - maybe it was cool FOR THAT TIME and now 10 years later, we have become spoiled with cue points, word play edits, and 3style mixing by todays standards.

Dude was such an incredible talent and from all accounts was a legitimately good person through and through. Such a goddamn shame. He's still an inspiration 10 years after his death and we are lucky his work lives on inspiring others even today. Ima try to cut in "Only the good die young" later as a remembrance.
Addiction is the devil.
...Think it's time to go practice.
RIP AM.

Thank you for all that. Wow!! Some funny shit in there. Yep, he changed everything. I think all the time, what would it be like if he was still around? He broke barriers. I go back with Adam to 1999 when I was a promoter (ya, I was one of those scumbags that filled clubs good peeps). We first worked together when I was promoting Las Palmas in LA, Eden, Shelter, and many many more parties, club and events in the early 2000's. We killed it, ya he killed it. Love all the references to Stone and Mike B, who AM connected me and my crew with, who DJ'd some parties, weddings and my engagement party. DJ Revolution is a super hero for sure, who helped me become a better DJ. I owed a pair of 1200's back in those days (still use them), but I didn't know shit, just faked it at some late night parties at my house. At one moment, he gave me a mixed tape at his house which I would play all the time in my car, or even at some house parties. That mixed tape and hearing him spin every weekend changed it all for me. He inspired me to DJ, to dig in, learn, practice, work, and never stop working. Thx for the inspiration. RIP DJAM

It's great to see someone taking initiative in this way and striving to create a reference guide for DJ AM's quotes. This is sure to be an invaluable resource for all members of this community, as it will enable them to have quick access to factual knowledge about DJ AM directly from his own words. I'm sure this effort will be well appreciated by many!
