What is "Hollywood Style" Djing?

joerockets 10:07 AM - 28 February, 2007
Some promoter asked me if I could rock this for his next event. When I asked him what that meant he said:

"Uh, like no Tupac..."

Anyone wanna clarify for me?
DJ Michael Basic 10:31 AM - 28 February, 2007
"Hollywood Style" DJing is like the AM/Z-Trip style sets...lots of mashups, lots of 80s, rock, a little catchy house...lots of cheese along with the popular club songs and recurrants. Tupac is actually a good part of the hollywood style, California Love always gets played out here.
djskeetz 10:31 AM - 28 February, 2007
why dont you just rock your style? or just go to a couple hollywood clubs and see whats its all about.
joerockets 11:13 AM - 28 February, 2007
Quote:

I don't have time to go to hollywood clubs. not trying to be snotty but my schedule just won't allow it at the moment.

As far as my own style, I really don't think I can change over night but I want to try and be a little accomodating considering the cash i'm getting
djskeetz 11:31 AM - 28 February, 2007
ah, that sucks, but if you ever have time in the future, i'd check it out, so you could be a little more accomodating for the promoter.

also sir,

did the promoter hear you mix then ask you to work for him? if so, he must of liked your style what ever you do.

one last thing, i've noticed most promoters have NO CLUE what the people want. they just look at the money factor of things.

for instance, i was rocking the buko break in da club, and the promoter says straight up, "im a drummer, i can hear the beat is off, change this shit right now."

so yeah.
djskeetz 11:32 AM - 28 February, 2007
oh and yes, that break is fucking awesome as all hell, go hollaboyz!
Mr. $weetlife 2:37 PM - 28 February, 2007
Well put skeetz! I dunno joerockets, if the money is good you better break out all the "sweet home alabama" mash-ups you can find. Maybe you'll meet a young B-list starlet...
dj cubicle 2:44 PM - 28 February, 2007
Why meet a B-list starlet when you could meet a... D-list starlet?

*puts pinky up to mouth*
kicko 3:28 PM - 28 February, 2007

So does Hollywood Style DJing mean showing up with a Tech 12 but NOT EVEN CONNECTING A CARTRIDGE TO IT?
john blaze 10:37 PM - 28 February, 2007
Mixing? Mixing? I think you mean "Playing Songs" djskeetz.

This broad should stick to what she does best, party and crash her cars up.
djskeetz 10:50 PM - 28 February, 2007
dear john blaze,

you are probably correct. that is how most DJ's at les deux mix, but i might just roll out to see what she is all about.
john blaze 10:53 PM - 28 February, 2007
I know I was just bustin balls. I would love to see what she has. Who knows, maybe she can mix? If she ever plays on the East Coast, I am there lol.

I bet one of two things will happen.

1. She will have a mix cd in and fake it.
2. Some dude will be queing her shit up.
3. Fade In, Fade Out.
djskeetz 10:53 PM - 28 February, 2007
let me correct myself, the DJ's that play in the outside room trainwreck, and really suck, but the DJ inside are good.
john blaze 10:54 PM - 28 February, 2007
That's 3 things, my bad.

As for "Hollywood Style" dj'ing, wouldn't it be the same thing as a "hipster party?" Forgive me, as I am not from the left coast.

lol mr blaze, isn't that out of three things? hehehe
Dj Ryme 10:56 PM - 28 February, 2007
I HIGHLY doubt she can mix, think about her movie schedule, apperances, late nights out being a whore, where does she have time to learn the fine are of dj'ing???? Seriously. This just proves mine and many others points that all you need are some tits & or some fame and you can be a dj now with SSL. Again, where were all these celbrity dj's back when there was only viny?????? NOWHERE because none of them would have been able to put in the time to go digging.
djskeetz 11:02 PM - 28 February, 2007
yes mr blaze, les deux is definitely a hipster place, on several occasions, there have been the paparazzi, ive seen many celebrities and wannabe models, and future promoters, all kinds of shit.
djskeetz 11:04 PM - 28 February, 2007
basically, from my eyes, its like the screen printed tshirts, black blazer, converse shoes, and sometimes with a peacock hat.

yeh the guy who answered ur question first he is right...try to get a mashup of "master at work - work" the mashup is made using put your hands up for detroit, david guetta vs the egg and i got some house tunes tht i play only for big gigs...

oh by the way did u knw tht my club manager told me i cnt back spin or play elektro house :S ...well if i dnt play elektro house on a elektro/house/rnb night wat does he think i should be playing...lol
bumpsdick 12:28 PM - 1 March, 2007
I live, play and party in Hollywood what it makes me think of is of a mash up of electro, new rave, new wave and a bit of club-banger hip hop (no new backpacker, no source magazine 90s shit). Sparse to no house music and just a little rock, shit like gossip and CSS.

Since you mention it, I was on the list for that lindsay lohan party (but i didn't go--watched guns 'n' bombs and ima robot instead). she's wack as fuck. steve aoki played too, he's in that 'hollywood dj' crowd with AM and such. He's halfway decent, as he as his moments.

As of last week, AM and Z-Trip both resident at LAX on Sundays (Z-trip is the new addition). Z-Trip will be the one worth going for, imo. You can check the place for FREE any given Sunday by going to:

www.bpmmagazine.net

I'm not a promoter for the place or anything, I just think they have a lot of talent coming through on a weekly guest basis and like to share.

I'll tell you what hollywood mxing is.. Buy a tight silk shirt preferably small to medium size. Stonewash desinger brand jeans. Slick your hair back real nice and don't forget to workout, because if you gonna dj hollywood you gotta look hollywod. It wouldn't bother you to buy some make up just in case you have people taking pictures of you all night. Now you good to go!

sometimes the promoter DOES know more than the DJ. Don't take criticism to seriously. For every person that thinks you suck, there will always be at least one person who thingks youre dope... Unless you really do suck.
Dj Maxim S 9:03 AM - 3 March, 2007
well....my club manager takes one person's thought into consideration thn 100 people puttin their thumbs up...i think i shud record a video of people bouncing on the dance floor n show it to ma manager next time he comes with stupid criticism like somebody didnt like tht track or somebody didnt like u backspinning "the fcuk"...neways..i m gonna leave there soon....jus waitin for the reply from a night club 4 times bigger thn his....nother resident alrdy left becoz he thinks he knws a lot about music..all he knws is how to manage a bar.

and has any one come across this problem like, someone standin next to the booth trying to advise wat u shud do or play?....tht happnd to me i offered him my head phones and asked him to dj instead....lol

DJ Splyce 12:40 AM - 18 March, 2007
Whenever I've listened to other DJ's out of LA (especially NY), I've noticed a TOTALLY different style than I hear when I'm in LA. Of course, different spots in LA are going to have different crowds, and often times the more "Hollywood" the spots are, more obscure music is acceptable and appreciated. I can't necessarily say it's a "style" rather than one method of many aimed at pleasing that particular crowd. I always try to play music you wouldn't always hear on MTV or on top 40 radio, but will still rock the crowd!

ha, hollywood style is where you spin whatever genre you want, you play each song for an average of a minute and 30 seconds before blending into the next one, or you can do a steve aoki and just slam into the next song.
DJTREND 1:05 PM - 26 March, 2007
Go to Club LAX on Saturday nights. DJ IMAGE spins out there with OJ, and some celeb guest DJ's. Both him and I are from Indiana (He flies there every week to DJ) so when I heard him spin I knew immediately this was hollywood style DJing.... (something he has adapted in the last year DJing out there)

In essence

We are talking 110-130 BPM
Mashups/Mixups and remix's that flow into another song within 2 minute or less.

Its Hip Hop, Rock, Old School, Funk, all mixed up in a huge conglomerate that moves so fast that you really don't even get time to think about what Genre your listening to. To rock a normal Hollywood set you need twice the amount of songs a normal DJ would use. Lets say a 3 hour set would be 75 songs... Hollywood DJ is going to bust out 150 songs segued together in 2-3 minute mix's... The idea is your Hollywood audience has heard it all, so don't bore them with a song that lasts to long.

bottom line is, no one knows what the shit they are talking about and everyone is trying to make an educated and informative generalization on what hollywood style dj'ing is... pretty much anyone taking this thread seriously is an a-hole and should consider starting to DJ and worrying about their own style as opposed to worrying about a fabricated style by a scumbag promoter/event planner who had no idea what the hell they were talking about... as a dj community, we should not justify stupid questions like "can you play the birthday song" or "can you play hiphop" while im playing "tried by 12", not sure why were dedicating an entire thread to something, we all know, was invented by martin lawrence circa 1990... to recap, hip hop sucks!

sad but true...in most cases
Bigfourty4 12:25 AM - 7 April, 2007
i think there is more than one style of djing in NYC. Not all of the DJs here just use drops and airhorns. Its not like every club has a sampler waiting for you.

Just my opinion
Jay-R 12:45 AM - 7 April, 2007
dj clue clue clue.

fuck that.
papsworth 9:27 AM - 7 April, 2007
its unfortunate but the people you are referring to as the "air horn" and lack of beatmatching skills blah blah arent really the true representation of new york djs.

they are just the shitty hip hop mixtape djs, and basically the radio djs you are referring too.

i can assure the people who are working the good clubs around 27th street and the meatpacking district are much more talented than many of you assume.......

using gunshots and air horns is some straight bullshit that wont fly at work... you wont have a job for long with that.

dj clue doesnt do clubs. because he cant.
Roctacraze 10:06 AM - 7 April, 2007
I USE AIR HORNS all the time... Plus just because you CAN mix two records together does not mean you should. A dj that handels the mic well and knows when to drop what can rock a party Just as good or better than anybody.... I like listening to these type of djs much more than "Hollywood" style djs... Only other djs want to hear skills.. Bitches wanna hear their jams...

Bigfourty4 3:41 PM - 7 April, 2007
Meatpacking is basically where all the butcher places are, hence the name meatpacking. It just so happens that there are a majority of clubs in the same area.

just for the record, much respect to the dj's that don't get caught up with all the gunshot and airhorn stuff. i just think they have more skills than that. flame me all you want, but we all have our flavors. my comments are for the people that ONLY do that sort of stuff. i know they are out there.

Hollywood style djing is all about if you can crush it in the mix! Just sit back when you are djing and ask yourself.. "Am I crushing it in the mix right now?" Eventually people will come up and say "Damn dog, you're crushing it in the mix right now!" Someone once asked me if I could crush it in the mix... i had to think about it.. but eventually the answer was clear when the whole crowd was "CRUSH IT, CRUSH IT, CRUSH IT!" with tears of joy streaming down their face. I didn't even take the money that night... boom

I dj in NYC in the meatpacking district, and in midtown. I don't use airhorns or gunshots to mix, and I actually do know how to beatmatch... and mix in 80's.. and funk, and rock, and disco, and house, etc. etc. etc. into the retarded hip hop music that the billboard charts love so much. But hey.. this is why I'm hot. New York City crowds suck balls. They like songs strictly because they're new, and not necessarily because they're good. They have the collective attention span of your average gnat. They wouldn't recognize a good song and/or dj if it crawled up their ass. The problem with NYC is, no one that lives here is actually **FROM** NYC. Just a bunch of wannabe's trying to look cool. Basic rule of thumb here.... if they don't know the lyrics by heart... they don't like it.

whos kidding?!?! people from NYC are crap... i only like people from LA. and not even people originally from LA, but the imports from the po-dunk towns in the middle of country who come to be "actors" and "rockstars" (not musicians) and get caught in the scene where "hollywood style" djing is prominent. the only real actors in this town are the DJs... bottom line is, no one knows what the shit they are talking about and everyone is trying to make an educated and informative generalization on what hollywood style dj'ing is... pretty much anyone taking this thread seriously is an a-hole and should consider starting to DJ and worrying about their own style as opposed to worrying about a fabricated style by a scumbag promoter/event planner who had no idea what the hell they were talking about... as a dj community, we should not justify stupid questions like "can you play the birthday song" or "can you play hiphop" while im playing "tried by 12", not sure why were dedicating an entire thread to something, we all know, was invented by martin lawrence circa 1990... to recap, hip hop sucks!

and if you are confused about my martin lawrence refrence, it was not literal but a reminder of how fresh his character bilal was.. SWWWIIIIIIIIIIITCH!

Crushing it is where you're crushing it in the mix! Not to be confused with either Cruising or Krush Grooving.

It's all about crushing it in the mix!

Releaux 8:08 PM - 16 April, 2007
I can pretend to be serious if you want...

Ahem. Pretend-seriousness ON:

I don't get what the big deal is about hollywood djing. It's all about pandering to spoiled rich actors who think they have something to say to me about public policy and social awareness before they go back to their giant energy-sucking mansions with illegal immigrant staff and their tofu lattes and their limousines!

If dancing to some cheesy "mash-up" (what a stupid media-driven word) of RuPaul and Lynrd Skynrd somehow makes them feel good about identifying with the little people that they don't think can make a decision for themselves, then great! I sure don't want any 19 year old millionaire starlet to somehow feel bad about herself!!!

Pretend-Seriousness OFF

I still say it's all about crushing it in the mix.

I'm one of the youngest cats out there...just graduated high school to be exact, in my first year out. Now, DJ Splyce, a good friend of mine, is one of the nastiest DJ's out there. In fact, since I don't really DJ anymore, I'm bringing him out to New York to DJ my charity teen party as a FAVOR to ME!(www.spinaction.org). Why do this? There are maybe 10 DJ's that have the skills that he does, and I see most of them on here. AM, Vice, Roctakon, Gusto, OB-One, Stone Rokk, etc...they may be hollywood, but that's only because they're the BEST and they WORKED their asses off to get there.

Shoutouts to my man Adam aka AM for helping me through some hard DJ times when I was down. Shoutouts to Roctakon, seen him a few times in NY, he's the fucking man! Shoutouts to the whole SKAM artist group and shoutout to my man Splyce.

I didn't even take the money that night... boom

There it is E-Head. There really ain't no "neccessary" steps in it. It's just all about killin' whatever you're mixing. To the point that people take notice and come over to you and say "Damn dog, you're crushing it in the mix right now!". Then more and more and more people start noticing until the whole joint is screamin' "CRUSH IT, CRUSH IT, CRUSH IT!" with tears of joy streaming down their face. And with the crowd showing show much love to you for "crushing it" the whole night, you pass on your loot and take that crowd love as payment.

And the crowd's "tears of joy" isn't optional. It's a must.
Bigfourty4 3:43 PM - 17 April, 2007
We do not crunch the mix. We crush the mix.

BIG DIFFERENCE THERE

MCHINJI, Malawi (Reuters) -- Malawi police and stone-throwing school students blocked journalists from covering pop star Madonna's visit to an orphanage on Tuesday where the boy she is adopting was due to meet his biological father.

Teenaged students in black and yellow uniforms from the secondary school at the Mchinji Home of Hope orphanage hurled stones at journalists' cars and formed a protective ring around the building.

Man, I have a whole new view of crushing it now...
AMF 4:32 PM - 17 April, 2007
See, they are taking the "crushin'" thing out of context. "Crushin'" should be a joyous thing... But then again, throwing rocks at someone and getting away with it could be a joyous thing.

I'll have to ponder this one... lmao

Shoutouts to the whole SKAM artist group and shoutout to my man Splyce.

crushing it in the mix is all about not even knowing that you're crushing it in the mix. you're too busy crushing it in the mix to notice anything else but crushing it in the mix, but then after the set, someone will come up to you and say "you were crushing it in the mix", and its only at that point you realize that you were crushing it in the mix.

but of course you don't let them know that you didn't know you were crushing in the mix. So you just respond with "yeah, I know, that's all I know how to do, crush it in the mix". And of course it only works if you self refer to yourself as crushing it in the mix. Because the point of it all is that you were crushing it in the mix.

BigFourty4, Ok I take it back your ok! Now:

Boston and Janet: I guess what I said about NY cats is right! Sound like your sucking some crooklynclan Dick and not all that well!

These Sounds Vs Oh: the only thing I like about this one is the these sounds sample other then that it's gay, Just look at it as a lost of time!

It's Goin Down And Out: I love this one! hats off...Good work! Can I use it?

Promiscuous MildShak: Gay, Not bad remixing just poor songs to remix. I didn't like it!

RobWay Break: FIRE, FIRE, FIRE, I f***in Love this one good shit!

What You Know About: I didn't like it at 1st but after I min. I liked it and the end was off the hook! Good work!

Over all your good Keep it up! Feel free to hear me and Tell me what you really think. No hard feeling! Thanks
Bigfourty4 6:36 PM - 18 April, 2007
Boston and Janet---I did that in Traktor---definately my first mix, and was done wayyyyy back. I know it sounds wack...but i like it...either way. i can still use the Guitar riff and put something else behind it.

These Sounds vs oh--agreed. I would only use it to save time in between playing two tracks..now i can play one.

Goin down and out---i just dont like the beginning...the dude's scream is lound. Sometimes i just play it live and drop the vocal when he says "DOWN"...because the girl says the same exact words.....so it is pretty much replacing his voice with hers.

Promiscous milkshake...agreed...also when promiscuos first came out...so i figured it was a tool to use to go into anothe rmix.

Robway Break---I toldya so. that was done in audacity. between the biggy part and ciara---i like to do some "fresh" sample scatches. I usually play this first if i have to get the crowd goin. Oh...and it may be fatman scoop...but if you keep changing it with a new instrumental.....and constantly update the instrumental to a new track..it will be bangin

What you know bout---true...it gets a lil crazy at some points...

Im at work now and in a meeting...so i will check it when i get a chance. DJ'in isn't my full time job...im a consultant

Are you in NOVA? Some of the DJs at the clubs in D.C. give this "style" a chance and pull it off with solid results. If you can get to FLY on a weekend night you'll see what I mean.

Let's see here:
Stone
Sid
Splyce

All Hollywood DJ's, all S's?! EFFING CONSPIRACY if you ask me.
And give Fashen back before he turns all gay and Lindsey Lohan on us. This should be settled once and for all, Vegas, Body English, SKAM takeover party. Let's let Vice referee and OB can be the enforcer. Funke the senior and stand there and make snide comments. And 5iveskeet can drink. It'll be an epic battle for the ages. After all that name dropping, can I be a Hollywood DJ now?

You're so right. The world would never know. As much as there are so many haters on AM, I admire his style and technics. His cuts are fresh and scratching is very clean. From one of his latest mixes I heard, he's changing to the way I remember starting DJing, progressive house. Seems like L.A., and Vegas are stressing more on progressive house these days. You'll even hear it mashed-up with Pop or rock etc.

BTW, AM if you're reading, i'd like to know the name of that Depeche Mode house remix you played mixed with that cream song. I've been looking for those.

You guys have it all wrong. Hollywood-style refers to your 'tude. Walk in like you're the main star of the show and everybody else is there to serve you. Don't bring your own needles and demand that the club find some for you. Act like a complete douchebag to everyone you meet, especially the guy who's paying you. When someone comes up to make a request, put your headphones over your ears and shake your head pointing at them. Don't smile; keep a serious expression on your face and bob your head slowly to the music, but don't make it look like you're actually dancing or enjoying yourself. If you do talk to anybody, make sure you stop in mid-sentence the second somebody more important walks by and focus all your attention on them. Oh yeah, and play nothing but the cheesiest top 40 hip hop, preferably whatever ten songs they are currently playing over and over and over again on Power 106.

;)

"Of course, it's not the technique that makes the music; it's...[the] ability to fuse [your] life with the *rhythm of the times*. This is the essence of music."
- Herbie Hancock, in liner notes from Jaco Pastorius S/T

In other words, times change and things change. Instead of being bitter about it, grow and develop with the times. There's still plenty of room to have your own voice -- even within the context of what is trendy.
