DJ Solomon vs. DJ AM

dyvrs 4:00 PM - 17 November, 2006
I was listening to some of your sets Solomon and is it just me or did you bite most of AM's sets?

I understand you said you have alot of AM influence but does mean you can pretty much do the same songs back to back and add to them?
Dj Metro 4:55 PM - 17 November, 2006
and the judges take a point off........hitting below the belt
Dj Ryme 5:15 PM - 17 November, 2006
oUch!
TheMightyThor 5:30 PM - 17 November, 2006
djs need to learn how to scratch.
DJBlisk 5:32 PM - 17 November, 2006
They don't even mix the same. What are you talking about? You that that Solomon has spun with AM?

What is the purpose of this????.

They both can mix their A** off.
AMF 6:47 PM - 17 November, 2006
dyvrs is swingin' for the nut sack with a upper cut. Just because they both mix oldschool rock, pop, r&b and top 40 in their sets, he's a biter? I don't get it. =P
type1 6:50 PM - 17 November, 2006
I 2nd that.
DJ RICKGEE 6:54 PM - 17 November, 2006
Soloman- Big ups for posting those mixes. Keep doin your thing homeboy.

I mean if AM didn't notice it and could care the fuck less if Soloman did spin like him. Why would you?

That Rickgee comment was funny.

Who do you guys think was the forefather of spinning mashup music like this???

I give it up Ztrip since he seems like the one that popularized it.

DJ 3pm 9:36 PM - 17 November, 2006
i've only heard dj am on youtube videos, but i saw dj solomon spin live this summer at tryst (wynn casino in vegas) and he put down an amazing set!

biggest similarity between the two would be that they aren't afraid to play music with a groove, no matter what genre it is or what year it was released.

as far as biting style, we are all biting granmaster theodore's style everytime we scratch. haters of the world unite!

I think we all use stuff we've learned from other DJ's (scratches and such) as well, as some techniques and either adapted them to fit our style or need. However, if he's really mixing the same songs in the same order back to back, then that's definitely biting.
sixxx 9:46 PM - 17 November, 2006
and don't get me wrong. I don't know if he is or not.
MrGoodie2shoes 10:17 PM - 17 November, 2006
I've heard AM "bite" Z-trip... but adds his own twist... everyone does it to some degree...
who fucking cares...

I think this thread is just a clever marketing tool by solomon and am to get people to come to san francisco tonight since they're both spinning here at clubs that are only a couple blocks from each other.

dj solomon 3:55 AM - 18 November, 2006
OOOOOKKKKK, let me first say that i am VERRRY flattered that anyone would even compare me to AM. Ive only known the cat for a few years but he is one of the most humble friendly individuals in the game. I definitely look up to him in many ways coz he is blazing the trail for all of us djs, reaching new heights that not many American Djs have achieved.

Now to get to dyvrs' question:

Yeah I definitely pick up on what people are doing, AM is one of the first guys i'd heard who grabs pieces of phrases in songs and scratches them to mix out of one record to another... I started picking up on that in my sets because i love the way it sounds...
I also started doing more double stutters (offsetting the double record by an 8th note, quarter note etc...) on songs because i saw that it was a good way to create some showmanship in a club and make the track sound more exciting (although i was doing that long before i met AM).

I think there might even be a few tracks, I cant remember without listening back to everything i've posted, where i mix a few songs in similar order and fashion to AM's mix... If any EVER asked me if I came up with that sequence, i would be the 1st to tell them that that's not my mix, its AM's mix.
I've done this with a few different djs I respect and admire. I started doing a mix Justin Hoffman (resident at Tryst for those who dont know) showed me with dr. dre into 2pac, showed it to someone else as "Justin's Mix" they told me "so and so" dj had been doing that mix forever. I've even had some mix that i thought only I did, and Justin came up with the exact same acapella over a Stanton Warriors Remix of Chicken Lips.... We even dropped it in the exact same place.

To continue on the AM tip, I've gotten a ton of inspiration and a few mixes i use out in the club, but on a side note, i must point out I hipped him to the Contours "Do you Love Me" which he plays regularly in his sets now.

So ya see here DYVRS, at this point in the dj game i feel like there are no DJ's without any other djs influence... its a dynamic ebb and flow of music that we all do our best to present to the public.

If I ever "borrow" anyone else's mix, I'll be the 1st one to tell ya about it! I look at it like DJ Flattery, its a show of respect and for their mastery of this craft and I encourage it. However you MUST find your own style and sound within that!
dj solomon 3:57 AM - 18 November, 2006
PS we are both playing in SF tonight, but im playing the early set at fluid, then Im off to roe to go catch my man tear it up.... So if you do really wanna hear, you can jump from one club to the other....

it funny how the post whores in the this thread decided to try to diss me on what i said but have no clue what im talking about cuz they didnt take the time to listen to solomons mixes or am mixes in entirety to see what i was talking about.

i wont go ahead and disect each mix but theres a few phrasing mixes, songs back to back, and even scratch pieces that are all similar between solomon and am and solomon even agrees.

....hey at least he didnt deny it. so props on that.

me personally i just think its a weird to bite sets to the point of where people see it, espcially from mr. AM because everyone is on his jock right now and knows his cuts.

otherwise i dig what you do solomon, the shit that wasnt AM'isque was original and dope.
DJ SPAIR 6:19 AM - 19 November, 2006

HA HA HA HA

DJ FOOD in da house... I actually referenced that pool in that super long crooklyn clan posting thats been growing the last few weeks... the real question is

where is MARTY SMITH AT?

MAN DJ Spair is sounding so much like Paul Okenfeld these days... he is turning the eq knobs just like Oke....
DJ SPAIR 9:01 PM - 19 November, 2006
Hahahah..yeah..good question! Where is that Marty??! I know he left around 10,000 promos at a storage unit in Oakland. Styles and Malachi were selling them off for him. This was about two years ago. Story has it that the pool defunked in 2001 and the labels kept sending him vinyl. I asume he was holding on to it as an investment..I remember he was so stingy to give up doubles of certain records. He would give you the newest hot record and then try to sell you a double copy! hahahaha! Definetly a character.

I'm going to try and slide throuh to the shin dig on Weds.I'll bring through some of my Okenfeld bitten mixtapes.
PEACE!
CMega 10:02 PM - 19 November, 2006
You guys need to realize this game is about ROCKING THE FUCKING CROWD!!!!! Do you realize how many dj's play out every friggin night all over the world who probably mix 2 records together that they think is original, but it's not. Is DJing in a nightclub about battling the guy who goes on before or after you? Everybody bites everybody, it's called evolution. One person can take an idea he heard from somebody else and modify it. Then that person can hear what that guy did and modify that with his own style. This mashup style from my point of view has evolved from the underground rave culture. Mix 2 tracks together to create something new. Dj's need to support each other and not hate on somebody who plays a similar set. Happens all over the world every night. If you get jealous or mad when you see another DJ banging it maybe you need to go back into the lab. I have a feeling it's mostly the younger dj's who hate. Grow up!!

fun thread. Props to Solomon for laying it out in a peaceful way. I listened to his Fluid Live (4 hour mix) over the course of 2 nights while doing work in the office and I was inspired. Never heard a full set by AM but I am looking forward to it.

Uplift your trade yall, stop the hate. ;)
