WELL I have old KID CAPRI tapes and he was doing mashups with R&B and Hip Hop back when ya'll were in diapers, maybe not all of you, LOL.He is a legend in the HIP HOP culture... playing the way he does really makes no sense to some of you watching the YOUTUBE video, but to me and the people who grew up listening to the man, it makes no difference. We all know he can get down on the 1200s' . The people who pay to go see him, want to just here the music they grew up with, no mixing, no cutting, just the music! It's definitely not for everyone. What would you play if you had a 20min set in the heart of BK? Nice smooth mixes don't cut it. Those were all classic jams, there isn't even a need to play more than the intro and hook. People know the jam, they're waiting for the next one.

I had trouble coming to grips with this style when I first started out learning how to mix and phrase records properly. It's the same style with a lot of big reggae sounds. It's more about what they say on the mic and the song they choose to follow it up with than it is about 'traditional' dj skills.

I don't think Kid Capri overdid it for what he was hired to do. He performed for less than 20 minutes and rocked it for his target crowd. To you guys are knocking him, imagine if you were hired to rock that NYC crowd... how would have you performed it to get nearly the crowd reaction he got? I thought Capri's set was on point and it sounds good w/o even seeing it visually.

Now I do recall someone posting a very garbage, quick, slam-drop set at a nightclub performed by Mr. Cee. It was absolutely hoRRible and he seemed to play less than 5 seconds on each song with absolutely no impact or flow. It was a perfect example of when slam-mixing goes wrong.

What I find weird was all of the "What song is this?" questions on the Youtube page. Absolute Hip Hop classics and these newbies have no idea of what they're listening to. At least they're inquiring.

NYC style. he's riding that feeling the crowd gets when they hear that classic familiar song. only lasts for a few seconds though, but if you string a lot of them together you can get a crowd super hype. you gotta hit em and hit em hard, in their face with a clear message. lowest common denominator factor here. def a throwback to the old school sound system style.

its not for everyone though. im pretty sure if you were up there letting the songs play too long and not getting on the mic hyping the crowd, it would not be the same energy level.

Even though hes just slamming pieces of songs in, there is still timing and thought to what hes playing. His selection is great. He got them amped of all them tunes. I appreciate his performance just as much as I appreciate watching laidback luke.

Dope set. Not knocking Capri at all. IMO it's harder to rock the mic like that and keep the energy high all while cueing the next song etc. Lining up a crate/playlist and just going down the list is the easy part.

Not true I played in Austin and I used the mic regularly people seemed to like the difference its all about doing you. The people either love it or hate. Not everyone can get on the mic and get the crowd into it. You have to command it trust me DJs on the east coast try it and fail as well.

Kid is a master of crowd control, many djs dont know or understand what this is or how to achieve it.......When you have this level of crowd control you do not have to stick with traditional dj styles (perfect mixes and technical scratches) to make the crowd go crazy and the people will remember that above all.

I'm NY born and raised. This is exactly what this hip hop crowd came out to see: mic work and fast cuts to classic tracks. I'm actually not a fan of this DJing style, but a lot of NY hip hop heads love it and in fact expect it. It's not a dance party, its a hood party to bop your head and throw your hands up.

I know what I'm getting into if I go to a Capri or Flex event, lots of shrieking and cutting, so I choose not to go. But if other people want it, a market by definiton, then why jump down Capri's throat for giving his audience exactly what they came to see?

You don't want anyone telling you how to rock your sets for your type of crowds ("use the mic more!" "stop transitioning so perfectly!"), so why would you tell another DJ how they should do their thing? Especially one who for all intents and purposes has "perfected" their style?

Like I said before, I'm not crazy about this. I prefer stlyes like flipside's, who can tear up some old school hip hop with all sorts of mixing and scratching techniques with minimal mic work. But that being said, for all of you who think that anyone can do what Capri does, go ahead and get yourself booked at a Brooklyn hip hop club and attempt his loud manic style. Skillz and Jeff are a whole different ball game. I don't mind Skillz talking on the mic at a Jeff gig. It enhances it. Most of us are DJs so we are content with JUST hearing Jeff do his thing, BUT to your average party person, who may not understand when Jeff drops the sleepy melody of Today by Tom Scott - Skillz provides the narration to hold it together.

As nice as jeff is, most of his sets are just too watered down for my personal taste. Jeff has all the right skills and record knowledge but his record selection tends not to be grimmey enough for me. But I understand that's what he has to do to be more appealing to a larger demographic to make that big money.....so be it. Jazzy Jeff was the sh!t waaayyyy back when he won the New Music Seminar and beating out NY's best in '86. New York DJ's weren't ready for the Philly DJ's. Philly had the DJ game on lock for years (battle wise) and we all know where transformer scratching came from; it changed the game. I actually had a cassette of Jazzy Jeff battling some dude named DJ Vick from like '85... damn I wish I could find that. He wasn't even with the Fresh Prince at the time, he had some other MC.

I remember that mixtape Capri put out. I was in college and everybody was bumpin' his mixes. I honestly didn't think he was that skillful back then because of DJ's like Jazzy Jeff and Cash Money. They set the bar plenty high and DJ's like Capri were just considered dope because of their acapella blends, vocal hype and new music exclusives.

But that same style might not work for another crowd...and the same style of music may not work for another crowd, either. And I'm sure he's aware of that, although most people who go to see him go for his style.

There are some DJ's who could be more effective with their type of crowd, whether they are as big as a Jazzy Jeff or Revolution, or whether they're just a local college DJ. Most of y'all would HATE the style that my DJ's in Tallahassee and the rest of Florida use...they talk even more than Capri, and the songs they play are nothing near "Real Hip Hop"...yet, their crowds would hate Capri's set, and they worship what is done here. Doesn't mean the crowd is dumb, wack, lame, or anything...just that age and regional difference make a HUGE difference.

They guy was there to do exactly what he did. Talk on the mic, get the crowd hyped, & play classic hip hop joints. He put on a performance & did it all well. I'm a NYC dude and can tell you Capri has never been one of my fav DJ's. BUT I used to go to his parties at the Seaport and he used to kill it. Whet he lacks in technical ability he makes up in crowd control & song library. His crates are deep.

In my opinion I think Kid Capri is dope and this video exemplifies what it really takes to control a crowd. Especially in a concert environment. I see a lot of hatred being thrown at him but the reality is the crowd was on his side and highly entertained and That's what counts when you perform.

the whole point of that style is dropping tracks from the start. Like it's been said, it's very similar to the way selectas play reggae. When I first started playing a lots of dancehall I was pre-occupied with mixing so that the chune came in at the hook or first verse. But too get the best crowd response, you need to drop those jams from the very start. It's just a cultural thing... Adapt or get booo'd

They're very successful and in order to reach that level of stardom DJs need realize it's not your skill that will excel Your career. Got to see him twice while I was in the UK last year. Zero mixing, lots of talking, but amazing vibe, great transitions, and wikked dubplates! The best reggae set I've ever heard, and one of the best dj sets I've heard, irrespective of genre or technical abilities.

1. Not at all, in fact there's probably more East Coast stuff on there. I'd have to go through and listen again. It's Bboy joints.
2/3. One could include a small section like this at virtually any type of event. People usually go nuts and most dance but I do get people that stop and stare or turn and watch while dancing.
4. Its not common at all, and there is only a handful of DJs in LA who utilize this style.

Of course it's not something that can be done all night. I'll sprinkle it in here and there. It works with most genre's but I doubt it'd work with top 40 or edm. Lol

Nobody uses that style all night, its generally used as a small segment of a set when used at a dance party or club. I generally only use that style with hiphop and reggae an lasts no longer than about 15mins. I call it "Medley Mixing" since there's no real name for it......

Literally, no EXAGERATION What so ever when I say there is never a point in the night when 2 tracks are playing at the same time.

NY DJs were all that to me when Marley Marl/Red Alert were my vantage point into Hip Hop music. I was very anti-NewYork DJ in the days of DJ Clue. (Preference) Would I personally say that Kid Capri is the shit,,,, No. I do respect that he is a legend. I have a problem with him doing his mix the way he did because he critiqued other dj's on Master of the Mix for doing the same shit he done.

(Style) Black One said it best when he said that Kid Capri's style would not fly in Texas because it won't. In Dallas they would run him out and surly tell him to shut the fuck up. No disrespect to Capri but that's just how it is down here in the dirty south (Texas) but in New York they will go crazy over his shows....

(Demographics) the way we grew up listing to DJ's tends to be your preference for DJ styles and knowledge there of. If you have traveled you have a wider range for dj styles. DJ Styles are somewhat different in Europe than it is in the United States just as it is on the east coast vs west cost or state to state.. So simply put if your not from there or been there you wont tend to understand it as your not truly a part of that culture. Which means can you really give a good assessment, I mean how could you but you can say your perfrence and what will not wok in your area. I think that is fair. Capri's set had the crowd going crazy so he must be doing something right...ohh that's how it is where he is from they love that style....You should understand at least that. FYI if your from Chicago and now doing House I think they kill you 0_O.... lol

You don't know what Crowd Control is. (of course you will focus on the technicality of the words) Crowd Control is about human interaction with the crowd, he started from the very beginning asking what they want - new shit or old shit?

By SHOW (of course you will focus on the technicality of the word) I mean the human performance, its about what he is DOING with the crowd and in front of the crowd - not what magical shit was dreamed up months before.

This is the foundation and essence of what makes DJ a performance artist rather than just a jukebox or a start pressor. This is exactly the ONLY thing that will separate human DJs from computer algorithms.

Thus I have to build my following. Capri has a following no matter how good or bad of a dj he is. Can't be mad if a guy has a following and can dj anyway he want's and can get away with it. They love him fucked up or not literally they are there to see him...

You really have be good at something to obtain a following as such. I still say after watching Master of the Mix that I lost some respect for Capri because he smashed on those guys for the same thing he does in his live shows. and down south crowds generally dont like scratching, and fast transitions... they like to hear at least 70% of the song played at regular speed.

so i had to adjust to the style the ppl in NC were used to.

The Dirty South especially Houston the music of choice is screw which is as slow as you can get. Yes they hate all that talking on the mic and yes they want to hear the whole song.. I love to fast mix songs because that's the best way to practice for me but doing that in the dirty south will cause you to lose a gig..... all the up tempo club music is out unless your doing pop clubs. First you can't compare DIFFERENT Peoples argument and call it hypocritical.

its "pretty much" the norm that in the last 15 years electronic DJs that book these grand shows and make that crazy money show their skills in the studio only (of course there are exceptions) and not in the DJ booth.

Its almost like going to a listening party.
Ive always said if your an electronic artist and charging crazy money you should be doing a Live PA.
I saw Basement Jaxx 2x in 3 months when Rooty dropped.
DJing... hardly any skills what so ever... but they rocked all vinyl (pre DVS... could have easily done CDJ) adn dropped some shit you would never hear from a dance artist.
Then I saw their Live performance.... INSANE.
Some tracks were perfromed totally live from scratch, others were basically arranged live and sort of remixed.... but still insanity.
