Weekly Battle Thread

okay here it is. all this recent talk about battling and the recent battle videos posted got me thinking (i know i...it's a miracle). but what about if we had a weekly video battle here on the boards? obviously there are a lot of the fine details that would have to be workedout, but in general i was thinking it would go something like this:

1. those interested would submit their name to a list/pool of possible contestants.
2. the Serato gods would randomly assign 2 people to compete for that given week
3. they would be given "X" amount of time to make and post their videos
4. videos would be graded on popular vote (obviously we would have to have a standardized grading system to prevent people from having their friends slant the vote)
5. time allowing, contestants might be allowed one retort/reply video to their opponents set
6. the winner would advance up to a new pool and would wait for other winners.
7. eventually the pool would be narrowed to 2 finalists for that given month
8. winner would take top respect, bragging rights and possibly some Serato/Rane goodies (i'm sure if there was enough interest in this we could convince the Serato/Rane gods to astound upon us their generosity in colored vinyl, t-shirts, stickers, etc...)


again, lots to be discussed in terms of format, content, equipment, etc. however, since this is a Scratch Live forum i think a "vinyl only" option is probably not going to hack it...but that's open to discussion.

i just wanted to get an idea of who/how many would be interested in this. i mean in addition to being a good way to promote DJing and Hip Hop roots, this would also be a good way to deflect some of the arguments on the board. think about it.....2 guys have a problem with each other....they battle the next week, end of story.

I think that is a great idea. I know I personally tend to focus a little extra when i compete so its a good way to up your skills

I think we have a good list so far. Anyone else? Let's say I'll give this a few more days for anyone else interested to get in on it. I'll tally the final list this Friday and then we can discuss the "official" rules. I think it should be mandatory that at least one Serato and one Rane employee compete...don't u guys?

sorry guys...been slipping on this. i'm in the process of moving so bear with me. i'll post the final list of contestants by tomorrow. in the meantime, lets start discussing the rules. as i mentioned before, probably "vinyl only" is not going to work but i think we could say that you have to use a certain percentage of real vinyl or at least maybe do one section of your routine with real vinyl (admittedly this is open for loose interpretation). also, i think we should specify routine length, recording specs (ie. the video should actually sho your face at least once so that we know it is really you), etc. i'm open for suggestions on how to make this the most fun, the most fair and the most entertaining. let me hear what you guys have to say about this...

I think this should make it more battle like since it's not as easy to press a key or combination of keys to load a song.

How about just pair everybody off, and the winners advance to round two etc. until we have a champ.

All the contestants vote on each battle.

I'd prefer not to have any arbitrary limitations, unless the 2 contenders in a particular battle agree on them.

They haven't said anything. Thus far so don't hold your breath.. Should be just for fun anyways. The battle thing is already losing steam...

If they get it right the first time, otherwise that could be an hour long ordeal. I know for me, sometimes it takes forver to warm up and get a mix cd going without having to start over because of something I thought was a mistake.

I agree here I know everyone will start in about microwaves and toasters and whatever else but the collection of vinyl shouldn't be the measure of your skill I have a fairly large collection of vinyl but its all breaks and electro so unless we extend the battle to about an hour format I'll need to rock off my digital library

wow...this thread kinda took off. sorry for the absence guys. i've been moving over the past week and have been without internet access for a while. thanks to those of you who jumped in and kept this thing going. i was worried it was going to fizzle if i didn't get it organized. in all honesty i was actually hoping to compete but all my gear is still packed away in storage (excuses excuses i know). i still haven't been able to convince the mods to donate anything significant in terms of prizes. however, in keeping with the spirit and to keep you guys motivated, i'm going to put up a set of sealed orange CVs from my personal stock to the overall winner. yep...you heard me right...a set of unopened, sealed orange CVs will go out to the winner. so let's get those videos in and keep it clean (well sort of...lol). good luck!!

if anyone wants to talk to me in person hit me up on PM and i'll give out my new Google Voice number (yeeeeaaaahhhh).

and the prize was to play at Flow Festival on 15th of August.
And on 17th I'm jetting to NYC for 8 days.

You can always zip and password protect your video and upload. Then when your opponent posts their video, then give out the password to the forum :)

The submission time is the weekend (Saturday/Sunday August 15 -16). Deadline is Sunday night, whatever timezone you are. So by Monday 5pm GMT all videos should be already submitted.

Was recording on an actual HD cam, but there is now audio in...SOUNDS HORIBLE
So I'm goin to recorded it again, with separate audio file (sound card accepts rca input) to see if I can merge the two.

Syncing should be no problem if you do it right. I recorded the audio from my mixer to the mic input on the sl1 card. I just pressed the record button on my video camera and the record button in scratch live interface simultaneously. Then dropped both audio and video recordings into my video editor, no adjustment needed.

Make sure you plug the camera and the computer into the same wall outlet. That way if there's any fluctuations from the power source they are the same.

Speaking of $20 webcams. I borrowed one to tape a few mix sessions to help teach a chick I've been tutoring, but taking it in on movie maker sucks. My hands move too fast and it looks like bad stop motion, just blur and hand frozen in time for 10 seconds at a time, even after fiddling with the program settings. Anybody recommend a decent program. The web cam is just an HP cheapo so I don't expect to make a Micheal Bay film, just want people to be able to actually see what I'm doing.

I used to use this when I only had a web cam www.winavi.com You can download the free version. The processor speed of the pc can have an effect on the recording too because my recording with my old pc was like what you described but with my new pc, its much smother. I think 320 *240 @ 30 frames per second gives the best quality.

Yeah my processor isn't that great, it's a duo core 1.8 but I have 4 GB RAM and it runs my Pro Tools with an obscene amount of tracks and video with no problem, yet I can't get a friggin webcam to go.

Lol....,I blame my failure to participate on my openent not having a pronounceable name or forum identity, since I suck on the decks a tech battle wouldn't be fair and I have nothin to diss him on so I have no material to record, then what I had done was the equivilenr to rabbits mix which was pointed out to be a mix not a battle, so if any of you old school pros want to step up and show us boobs how it's done I'm ready and waiting

Seriously though I was prepared to use wordplay to demolish my oppenent but where am I gonna get a zesh sample from, and as far as I can tell he hasent had any forum gaffs or arguments....this is the same way I lost the big freestyle battle in college I got paired against some quiet well dressed kid I didn't know who seemed to be a really nice guy lol

I don't think there should be weekly battles. I think 2 DJs should battle it out whenever there's a real HEATED argument. Like how they used to break dance against one another when there was beef. Sucka DJs step down.

Lol I agree there shouldn't be any deadlines or time limits but it shouldn't have to be an argument either cause if it IS heated most won't let their point ride on skills. It should just be a challenge thing.

Where it really lost steam was by setting them up in waves for a dated comp, when everyone signed up they were ready to go then they found out they had month they put it on the backburner and noone had a reason to post til then so the thread died

Err... How much more organized does it need to get.. seriously. There were rules posted and there was a deadline. Simple. You guys have no valid excuses.

Call my vid a mix - but at least I posted... Plus the whole point was the best of two videos, my opponent video may have turned out to be a mix too - who knows - then it would have been the decision - between the best mix...

Anyways if there is a next one, I guess I post some more of a "battle" video even though I cant scratch for shit.... But, I don't want to be paired with any pussies who too scared to post a video :)

Well, I had a strong inclination my opponent wasn't going to post, because, they were no posts from him since. The plan was to have the contents post, period.
This thread didn't go sour cuz i posted first, it when sour because of the folks who(some challenged everyone in a battle another thread, and said sign me up for two battles) signed up and didn't produce squat because they got cold feet.

The other battles were not a waste of time cause they served a purpose. This one had no purpose. When you're not really "defending" your honor/skills/whatever, there's no motivation. lol

I guess that's really what I"m trying to say. There was no motivation from the get go. Don't know how it happened.... I think time killed it.

As far as "it was good fun to look at".... I think that's a better thread. A thread about videos of you doing something... nothing necessarily battling anyone but just showing your skills.

we kinda do have that there is a post your YouTube page thread, I don't think a show your talent on video thread would work because as soon as people started posting you'd have the typical big ego I can do better djs telling them they suck to bad to be recording themselves and they need to quit until they get better or people going you suck that was borrong you aren't exciting to watch or my personal fave that was a good mix but you push too many buttons learn to do it the right way wavy. Then with that video on file you pretty much lose any and every argument from then on on here. What do you mean it's Tuesday didn't you post that shitty scratch video that vid sucked so your wrong I'm right it's Thursday.

I think we'd have alot more participation if we had better attitudes from the forum as a whole, Not saying you have to be nice but if someone sucks try to be constructive and help them learn instead of just bein an ass. On the same note alot of peole need to toughen up and learn how to TAKE critism. If some one says you need to tighten up your scratches then mabye take a mental note that someone thinks they can be tighter and either work on it or not instead of listing off your lifes resume and bashing the person who gave the advice. I think everyone on this forum needs to realise that none of us were voted Americas best Dj and that djing is a constant journey with no end there's always room for improvment and not everyone is going to agree or like 1 style or technique.

not surprised at the lack of videos, but i am surprised that head's are saying that they didn't make one 'cause it was the battle's fault.
the stuff b-bezzle says definitely makes sense but that's a reason not to enter in the first place, not a reason to not post a vid once you commit to it. i mean, the video would still be online even if the battle had been organized perfectly, right?

I wasn't making excuses for this thread I was giving reasons why a show your skills here vid thread wouldn't work, my excuse for this thread was giving too much time for the thread to Lise steam. I think everyone who signed up was hyped when they signed up so if a deadline of that weekend wad put up or a post asap it woulda kept steam vs having about 3 weeks to do it. When you have that much time to do it it's like having a semester term paper due last day of class of course your gonna put it off then things pop up and you don't have time to do the vid

I just heard the 2nd one. Nice skill. Sound is really crisp. You should make battle mixes. That's the way i like to battle 'cause I'm old school and I don't juggle but my word play is pretty good when I use tracks. My equipment is not as good as most but I get my point across very well.

No offense if any of them if they read this but most don't know the difference between good and bad DJs according to how we see it.
