Yup, Ultimate Rejects came out strong with this and look at Stage Gawd too with Mx Prime. They also have Addicted with Flippo. THe other big tune is Single - Orlando Octave. In the Power Soca Arena look at the Marli Wood Riddim and the Truck Stop Ridim (See Terry Lyons - I am Lyon, biggest tune). Force it Riddim (I think this was in Grenada Carnival but is come back for T&T Carnival) With Shal Marshal Dip - Dip. Leave me alone - Calypso Rose and Ella Andall with Devon Mathews - D Journey (Make it) giving that old calypso feel back to the present. Fast Wine and Waves as well as Lip Service (Lip Service Riddim) from Machel Montano are great as well.

It is pretty much Calypso based on the likes of the Mighty Shadow and what you may find at the Panorama (Steel Pan) competitions. What has happened here basically is that it may have come full circle since in previous years there was a lot of Hybrid ideas. Now they are back to this sort of Calypso influence and an influx of Power Soca that was not so prevalent in recent past years. The Power Soca also has taken a bit of old school flavour as well as in the release by Bunji Garlin - 1995 this weekend as well which takes a lot from the Power Soca of that time as well and the people now are lapping it up.

That chune brings back some really GOOD memories man. I playing that loud loud this morning.

Kes has also dropped Ramp Up as a Power Soca contribution. Kernel Roberts (Kitchener's son also known as Kitch as well) wrote it for him.

I know I was surprised when dropped the Kaiso joint.

I really love some calypso so I'm not too upset at a reduction of reggaeton style influence hehe. I'm pretty noob with island genres, still catching up on older DH and reggae but these lists are a great way for me to keep up a little without being able to afford to go out to the clubs the past year or so

Also what are 'money pull ups' - just good payments for DJ sets? And I notice someone talking about 'island bias' - do people REALLY only play certain islands' music? I know a local DJ who won't really play any UK or worldwide stuff, only local and mostly JA - but I don't get it. I realise he is deep with JA and been there many times but I wouldn't think you should for instance treat JA so different from TnT musically? Or would you? As I said I'm still fair noob (mostly coming from jungle, bashment and raggacore early 00s) so any knowledge is appreciated :)

Well in all honesty with JA and Reggae; not to sure how dancehall is treated; it has been given it's own genre while Soca and Calypso still wanes to be recognized by it's own genre even getting cast at times in Tropical House ( I don't like this term at all by the way). So how he might handle the music may be his own style. While he some are purists, in T&T for example, we have had soca from Japanese artists and even going as far as performing in the SOca Monarch competition her. Other islands soca are especially embraced and if you look you will see some of their riddims still seeping over into our Carnival as well. Angela Hunt is another example, though more American, has been embraced by the local music scene and what she put out even with her own contribution last year with Mon Bon Ami in the Ti Punch Riddim.. So I may guess that that particular DJ is just a purist because I have seen Dancehall artists from the UK put out some great stuff.

I forgot to mention. Queens Park Savannah - Superblue also dropped I think Thursday. It isn't bad. It is reflective of what he used to drop for the road in his time. Some folks aren't feeling it but I think it will take to the crowd. I mean if Take a bathe from Iwer could grab a crowd now there is hope for this song.

Soca is getting like dancehall -too many blasted songs coming out at one time. I'm just downloading anything that says "Soca 2016-2017" and throwing the dice when I play out. Sometimes I win with the selections but for the most part I'm striking out. Although certain artists are no-brainers the influx of songs occasionally frustrates me. And then again some of these songs are regional in certain spots.

It's what happens at Carnival season. After that things slow down almost to a halt except if there is another island Carnival around. This may not be the best rule of thumb to follow but it gives a pretty good idea, if you could listen to Radio Stations in the particular island, like T&T this time, like on Tunein for instance to get an idea of the frequency of what plays and what is requested you get a ballpark guideline at least. There are still many great songs that do not get the airplay that they deserve though.

Really can't pull up every thing from the island Carnivals, but surely if you have your tracsk from T&T Carnival 2017 , Ultimate Rejects - Jammin Still is sure fire, Machel and Bunji - Buss Head just a couple. list is too long. Vincy Carnival had some good shots and Grenada, Saltfish - Sandman, and Brave - Dynamite were great. So hope that points you in the right direction.

And yeah, you are right, I only download what I like and compare it against whats winning. No point in downloading all that crap and keeping it. For the most part I find a lot of the music for the Summer Period is pretty underwhelming TBH.

I totally agree. What I don't like is when I get requests for the sub-par "winning songs" and I don't have it. It's like there is a list that goes out that dictates what is going to be hot so only play those.

Was discussing this on a podcast I just started with a friend of mine. There are no real crossover dancehall bangers this year. Last year there was Bruk Off, Party Animal & Fever. Nothing that transcends regions/territories this year. Kinda sad.

Chronixx absolutely. Was disappointed with Stony Hill. The best songs were already released prior to the album (See: Nail Pon Cross). On the reggae tip check out Samori-I's album 'Black Gold'. It's very roots Reggae but VERY good. I put it up there with the Chronixx album as two best for the year in the Reggae category. Also check Collie Budz album 'The Good Life'. No marketing behind it whatsoever but a VERY good album also. He actually has a Snoop feature on it!

So many riddims. My issue is out of the 300+ riddims and singles put out each month, which ones are supposed to be the "hot" ones? I've heard some new no-name artists with songs on some riddims that outshine some of the more commmon "headliners" or veterans, but no DJ or radio show is playing them. What I asked before is if there is some list that I am not privy to which is dictating to the DJs as to what is "hot" and should be played? I need to get into that secret society somehow...

No, it's not just you, it's slow and not many hits are dropping in my opinion.

Yeah, hard to find crowd pleasers this year.

Well the Soca for 2018 T&T are coming out the wood work so there's that for me but that means when Carnival hits, I'll probably miss some bangers until a good few weeks after when I catch up.

Yea not a lot of true dancehall bangers this year. Aidonia ruled this year though. No doubt about it. Helps when Kartel can't voice as much as he used to lol. Alkaline, Popcaan and Mavado had mediocre years i think. Masicka had some good tunes out but i can really count on two hands the amount of tunes that will get big forwards.

In the crossover space Kranium has been dominating from my perspective.

I petition to add afrobeats in this thread. That true type of Dancehall sound is still around. It just moved. When I start to do a dancehall set now its usually older dancehall mixed with new afrobeats

That sounds neat and all but for me here in T&T at last, mixing dancehall; especially old school danchall dubs; with afrobeat will get you a look like WTF!. To lots of folks here that will be like sacrilege. lol Might get away more with mixing it with Soca especially since some soca has crossed over into it alot, particularly last year's contributions.

Yea I bet it's much different when you're spinning in the area where one of these genres is actually from.. I'm in the boston area and I be playing such a mix of it all to keep everyone dancing. I just switch in between genres like nothing here lol

I believe this happens when there is just too much music out there. Quantity over quality. Same thing with Hip-Hop. Too much disposable music out here now. Remember when a song could carry for years? Now? What - 3 to 4 months and done?

I've actually noticed something very interesting though. A lot of the producers aren't putting out the entire riddim at once these days. You might get a cut or two with the featured artist then 3 or 4 months later you get the rest of the riddim. in some cases almost a year later. The good news though is they are also voicing less artist on the riddims as opposed to back in the day when it was 10 artist on the same damn riddim. Think Kette Drum has the records for most voiced artist?

Are most of you riddim DJ's when it comes to the dancehall sets, or do you just go single for single?

I find that starting off with some nice riddims like La Vida, World Fete, Jambe-An, etc and just sprinkling in some singles afterwards works the best for trying to work in some of the new tracks. The badmon chunes don't really get too much rotation where I'm at, but I feel like it's always been like that even though they tend to be pretty popular overall.
