Hottest Rap/R&B Club Tracks: 2015 Edition

R-Tistic 10:24 AM - 3 January, 2015
Once again...we will use this thread to list out the biggest club bangers that are out, along with those you think have potential to be up next.

NEW RULE FOR THIS YEAR: No complaining about how music sucks now, how 1995 had way better hits, how you miss real hip hop, how we aren't real DJ's if we play a certain song, or anything else. Of course I can't personally erase comments or ban folks from here...but just out of respect, I ask that you all can refrain from it. If y'all see it and feel like I do....just ignore it.

Here's some of the current bangers from the last 1-2 months, along with some that are on the bubble and might get big.....

Genasis - Coco (Currently the biggest song out by far, replaced Hot nigga and IDFWU)

Rae Sremmurd - No type

French Montana ft. Jeremih - Bad bitch

Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars - Uptown Funk (works best with 30+ crowds and mixed crowds)

Nicki Minaj ft. Drake and Lil Wayne - Truffle butter

Nicki Minaj ft. Beyonce - Feeling myself

Rae Sremmurd ft. Nicki Minaj and Young Thug - Throw some mo

Rae Sremmurd - Come get her

Chris Brown ft. Tyga - Ayo

Rich The Kid ft. YG - Goin crazy (Remix)

E-40 ft. Lil Boosie (now listed as Boosie BadAzz) - Money sack

Troy Ave - All about the money (several versions)

Manolo Rose - Run Ricky Run (not sure how big it's gonna be...it's a darker, more hood OG Bobby Johnson to me)

Lil Boosie ft. Webbie - On that level

Tyrese ft. Snoop Dogg - Dumb shit (Dope on an early vibe/end of night tip, a modernized Bonita Applebum sample)

Eric Bellinger ft. 2 Chainz - Focused on you (Sample Oochie Wally just like the next track...)

Fabolous ft. Chris Brown - She wildin (I feel this one will be bigger than Belinger's...but they're the same good to me)

K Camp - Lil bit

Jae Murphy ft. Eric Bellinger, Problem, and Game - You playin

Rich Gang ft. Young Thug and Rich Homie Quan - Tell em

TeeFlii ft. Chris Brown - Blue lipstick (My favorite slow grind track out right now)

DJ Mustard ft. Eric Bellinger and Fabolous - 4 digits

Nicki Minaj ft. Chris Brown, Drake, and Lil Wayne - Only

Chris Brown ft. Akon - Came to do
Matterhorn 5:47 PM - 3 January, 2015

I like that CB and Akon song "Came to do"
DJFree 11:17 PM - 3 January, 2015
I love "Came To Do" too. I like "Focused On You" better but I think Fab's song will be bigger also.
DJFree 11:20 PM - 3 January, 2015
I like DJ Carisma & Cadence "Want This" (Shai sample)....I'm trying to find a place to put this in rotation.

Not sure I caught it in the other thread but that Jamie Foxx - Ain't My Fault is gonna be a classic for the old heads or grown and sexy crowd I think.

I liked that shit first time I heard it...

Eh that's how I feel for the most part...I mean, I did get a request for it from a group of girls who just looked like they study Beyonce's videos and life. And I think it'll work with some crowds...but it was really just the video that girls loved, which is the case for a good number of her songs (Video phone, Girls/Who run the world).

Even the Flawless remix with Nicki didn't get nearly as big as I expected it to.
royce$$ 6:03 PM - 7 January, 2015

seems like it has rotation written all over it. really it sounds like a migos record, with some usher/chris brown/jerimiah type generic rnb singing over it. i figured with usher it might get some radio/tv play.

Two weeks ago I would agree, not now.
When it first dropped as a vine video it took off and a week later fell on its face, now for the past two weeks has been the number one female requested song in any club especially in DC.
I would even say you can play it 3 times in a night.

Im the only one that thinks kid ink is trash? Like not unbearable but just painfully mediocre. All of his songs are the exact same. Basically made a career off Chris Brown hooks and DJ Mustard-type beats

It's funny to me...he's from L.A., but he didn't seem to ever have the..."Urban" type crowd here until "Show me." He had all those super trendy songs like "Time of your life" and "Bad ass" which were basically 11:15 PM at a trendy spot type songs at best, nothing near hits. He did adjust his style to cater to that new L.A. sound, and yea, he basically did make a career off Chris and Mustard/Mustard-type-beats.

Glasses Malone said that he has a great pen game, though...I can see that, but he's still a singles-only artist

It does sound wild that Fabolous records are seen as being Regional now, but it's true. A lot of them are way more early vibe/laid back too, so they may work outside the East on an early vibe tip, but none are 12-1:30 type tracks. A lot are actually more so radio sounding than club sounding...and that's really been his style forever. He never really had big club records...they were more so radio hits that worked in the club. Trade it all, Holla back young'n, You can't deny it (which was probably biggest in L.A. because of Nate)

They waited too long for the video and then made the remix with Ty Dolla $ign and French Montana.
I don't mind Ty Dolla on it, but French just seems like they're reaching to make it a national track. "oh french is on it, so NY will bump it"

Damn, good post, I ignored it and didn't hear it! I think it's a bit too Poppy for some "Urban" clubs...it will be early vibe at some, but Jeremih basically walked a tight rope to have appeal on both sides.
R-Tistic 11:46 AM - 17 January, 2015
And wow....I'm actually a bit surprised that Uptown Funk is going so hard at Rap/R&B only spots. I knew the 30+ would dig it, but it's primin hard right now. Thing is, it isn't gonna last forever with the young Rap/R&B crowds as much as it will with Open Format crowds....the fact that it's in several commercials is gonna burn it out too. But man right now, it's hitting haaard
R-Tistic 11:55 AM - 17 January, 2015
If Soulja Boy gets "Don't nothing move but the money" I might dig it...interesting production. Has that kinda futuristic West Coast empty sound to it, 90 BPM.

Just heard this new Rich Gang/Young Thug + Rich Homie Quan called "In this game"....dope beat, but needs a way stronger hook to actually blow up.

It's a 97 BPM Mustardized version of Color Me Badd's track. It's interesting for sure...I won't be surprised if it blows up. I personally don't like how the drums rock during the hook...they shoulda kept it with the regular clap and 808, but oh well.

It is never about what I like to play, what I want to hear, or what I am sick of. It is all about what does the customer want. If the requester is nice, even if the song isn't all that hip for the crowd, I will let him know as I do all special request, you ask for it, you dance to it.

When I play it I will let the crowd know the song is a special request.

if it is early or a slow night, I will do that...but if it don't fit or I already played it...not gonna happen....unless you tip well. ;-)

Can you pop a bottle, do your mirror-practiced twerk moves, point finger guns, or grind a chick to it? Eh... I don't think so.

It doesn't sound like a typical modern-day club track but that shouldn't stop a creative DJ from finding the acapella or running a dope beat behind it. I like the sound of it though. It's refreshing to hear real instruments and a singer's true voice once in a while. I'm interested in hearing what this whole album will sound like and how it may impact the music game if it sells well.

Oh I was almost shocked when that took off. First time I heard it outside my car was Supper Club, and crowd didn't move a bit..when the beat dropped, they slightly bounced, but not enough for the build up to be worth it. Even when Kid Capri dropped it at a spot in Inglewood, crowd was just standing there like "oh....."

Those type tracks require that the crowd knows them from start to finish, especially when it's as empty as Meek's track.

But 416/647.

Whoaaa....so for all three spots I DJ'd, the main request I got from Drake is "Know yourself"....people just LOVE that hook already, "running thru the streets with my woes!"

It might not even last, or become a hit for real, but yeah.

I'm just here to cosign that Scott King ft. Red Cafe track, took my pool long enough to get it but I'm gonna drop it at the next appropriate moment.

Picked up a couple of the drake songs, they probably work better in a lounge more than anything, nothing that'll really pop off IMO.

This is how I ALWAYS feel initially, yet I'm ALWAYS, always, aaaaallllllways wrong!!!!

I surely didn't think "Worst behavior" was gonna be the biggest club track on Nothing was the same. I even though "The language" was gonna be bigger. "Started from the bottom" sounded cool when I heard it, but I had zero idea it would be what it was. Even songs like "No new friends" which were actually pretty wack to me become big.
R-Tistic 5:15 AM - 17 February, 2015
Someone asked for this song called "White Iverson" from Post Malone...then I saw talk of it on Twitter today. Hmm...
R-Tistic 11:50 AM - 17 February, 2015
I finally listened to the Kid Ink album, and this "About mine" ft. Trey Songz is my favorite track that hasn't been released as a single...I might even like it more than "Be real." It's wild to hear Trey Songz use Suga Free's line in the hook..."you should get some money while you bullshittin!"

I thought it was already sorta big? I never have to play it at my gigs but I've seen others play it at the places that primarily play Hip Hop. Haven't heard it at the more Top 40-ish spots.

Also if anyone has heard the Big Sean album that leaked, I'm kinda hoping that Ariana Grande x Big Sean bonus track gets released as a single because I could see that working.

Y'all notice how many East Coast songs are starting to sound like "Hot n'gga" from Shmurda?

Just heard this Maejor "Rich!" track....along with tracks like "All about the money" from Troy Ave, Chinx ft. Jadakiss "Dope house"...they all have a very similar sound, and mid 80's to early 90's BPM. I knew it would happen like that too...good to hear the East develop a new club sound. They haven't really had one to me since the whole Ron Browz era.

I still don't think this year has produced any big hits. Drake's are getting a lot of love right now because they're new Drake songs...but a lot of his songs don't last that long in the club. Started from the bottom and Motto still go harder than a lot of songs that dropped since then.

But the biggest reactions are still from songs I was playing in November. I feel they'll be here by March or April...last year, a whole lot came around Spring time and right before Summer started

I did three clubs this weekend, and went to one on Thursday, so here's a "report"...

-People seem to love Energy more than 10 bands, but both of them work. "Legend" works if the crowd knows it, otherwise it drains the energy. "Know yourself" went hard as hell for the hook, but energy dropped when the verse came in.

-That Rich Homie Quan "Flex" is def turning into a banger...some folks don't know it yet, but they bounce to it

-Future "Commas" is big with the trendy crowd, but it hasn't hit the more commercial side yet.

-WTF happened to make 7-11 get better reaction now than the first month it came out with the video? I had a few requests for it when it dropped, but it never really got big reaction. But I had it requested at every party this weekend.

-"Blessings" hasn't really made an impact. Some crowds will sing the "Waaaaaay up" part...but that seems to be it.

-French "Bad bitch" just isn't getting reaction for me...people ain't rocking with it the way I hoped they would.

-"Trap queen" is definitely big...plenty response from it.

-Kid Ink "Be real" only gets moderate reaction, even though some folks love it

-Casey Veggies "Backflip" is getting pretty good reaction, folks are liking it

-Nicki Minaj "Want some more" works with trendy crowds, but doesn't seem to be too big (yet)

I didn't drop "Drop that kitty"...not sure if my crowds are gonna dig that hook just yet. But I felt similar bout "Fancy" when I first heard that, so eh.

well he's rapping like migos with TL(who's album was dope btw). sounds like the same sound palette as yeezus (which he normally flips sounds up album to album).

seems like if he had actually had migos/yt/rich homie and 'Dej Loaf, OT Genasis, Young thug, Fetty Wap ' on the album with their producers ala metro boomin, zaytoven, etc it would have been better or at least more authentic.

Man I disagree, I think Kanye took what those guys are doing and turned it up another notch.
Mr. Goodkat 10:34 PM - 2 March, 2015
he's just using hudson mohawke and sinjin hawke amongst others sounds.

i liked yeezus but Kanye basically like a high end fashion house that is raping street style to make an album. you can do that, but you cant do the same thing 2 years apart if thats what you are gonna do it. Its like if versace says heroin chic is gonna be a thing because its hot in the street. cool for one year, but 2 years later its already over.

at the time that yeezus came out, underground wise those guys were hot, and edm was big, but right now that hip hop took back over in 2014 and put those guys on the back burner, with a whole different style has popped out of the underground. now would have been a perfect year for him to go back to the states simple basically everyone in the electronic world is copying u.s. southern rappers from mid last year to right now.

Future Brown and Brodinski, 2 albums that i look to being huge electronic releases in europe/uk(at least getting the push from media and internet in 2015) both put out rap albums(basically).

Where im at, from the moment I play my first song to the moment I do last call, EVERY white person in the club will find a moment to approach me with "aye dj, you got that gates" and "got any keven gates, WHEN YOU GONNA PLAY THAT GATES".

Since the requests NEVER stop I'll end up dropping some but it almost NEVER works. I get the "why the fuck are you playing this" look on 90% of em and the 10% that work (I dont get tired, break a bitch down, posed to be in love, satalites) all get a big "YAAAY" as everyone gives me he thumbs up and smile as the leave the dancefloor and go stand in the corner.

I just cant grasp how I can get that many requests for an artist who A) noone seems to actually listen to, even.though they ask for any gates they have never heard 90% of the sings I drop and B) no one seems to like as soon as I play the song they asked for.

I guess it goes back to that prob alot of people have where they cant distinguish the difference between what should be played in the club vs whats played in the house while smoking out

Gates is officially a caricature. Because of the eating ass, sleeping with his cousin and kicking a girl out the bed for not giving his dog head he's pretty much turned into Riff Raff. I honestly think the people requesting him were doing it as a joke. He's known more for the dumb shit than his music

Ahh...see, in the last few years, hell, maybe forever, it's been rappers like this. The ones that have a following, but it's mainly guys, and although they don't have club tracks, guys will still ask for their songs to be played in the club. So that's a perfect description. That 10% will be like "that DJ was DOPE, he played Gates at the club!!!!" while the rest of the crowd is straight lost.

Side note: a couple of DJs in the area are joking about dropping songs from EMPIRE.

I was just asking about that - a Mixshow Dj in my area (detroit) has been dropping Drip Drop from Empire in the Noon Hotmix and I saw a couple of THOTs get slightly turned up when they recognized it. Been checking the pools - no service yet

If they can release all that wack shit from Glee when that show was peaking - seems more logical for Empire

I just like having everything in one spot and figured I would share.

Gets a good response from the younger crowd, most ppl laugh cause they can believe i threw it on, but i did a fashion/talent show at a high school this past wknd and all the kids there went crazy.
R-Tistic 10:02 PM - 9 March, 2015
Speaking of childish novelty songs, this group of kids asked me for the Little Einsteins remix...I guess they have Vines where they do the Whip to it, SMH.

But yeah, that Kanye "All day" will be a hit once it warms up. The guys at my club knew it more than the girls did.

R-Tistic 6:33 AM - 25 March, 2015
This Solo Lucci "Whip it" sounds like it could be a hit in ATL. Super slow like a lotta songs right now, 50 BPM, but that's what's hitting for a lotta crowds.
R-Tistic 6:44 AM - 25 March, 2015
So I'm not sure how much they'll blow up, but I'm rollin with Tuxedo HAAARD. It's more Retro-Funk-Pop than Rap/R&B for sure, and only a few of my crowds will dig it (mainly 30+ L.A. natives)...but yeah.

They re-did "Ain't no fun" and basically make it sound like it could have been an 80's song that Snoop sampled instead of the other way around. It's called "Number one." "After the dance" is dope too, sounds like a Slave track. A lot of their songs fit right next to "Uptown funk" and "Peaches and cream."
R-Tistic 6:44 AM - 25 March, 2015
Chris Brown ft. Tyga - "Nothin like me"

Jake & Papa - "Leave me"

Number one is pretty dope.
"So good" is a nice opener too.

somebody's been listening to dam-funk. then again dam is big fan of slave.
DJDialloRiddle 11:05 PM - 25 March, 2015
"Partition (Invoker Remix)" - Beyonce
(this is my go-to at the very beginning or very end of the night lately - always gets love from the people there - a solid, sexy Disclosure-esque track)

"Alright" - Kendrick Lamar
(Pharrell butchered this, in a good way - love it - might be my favorite on the album)

A lot of their songs fit right next to "Uptown funk" and "Peaches and cream."

yayyyy thank you for thems gems this is what I like to play in my sets

Seen it bomb this past wknd, ppl were looking confused. Def. not a party song, if i was to drop it at a party i would only drop the hook (drake part}, its the most memorable part of the song (crowd can sing along) and maybe the only part of they song that "MIGHT" works in a party atmosphere.
R-Tistic 3:39 PM - 26 March, 2015
"Blessings" is hit or miss, usually only works with trendy bottle crowds that aren't really dancing.

Even "Only" from Nicki is hit or miss...it's super slow and empty, and some crowds will rap it word for word while some completely stop dancing.
R-Tistic 3:41 PM - 26 March, 2015
And man, I did a college party last night, which I rarely ever do. It was the NSBE (Black Engineers) convention here in L.A./Anaheim, so they came from all over the nation. Overall, it was very high energy, but the requests got on my nerves x100....they were irritating as hell.

I think the only song they requested that I wasn't familiar with was Shy Glizzy "White girl"...two folks requested it, but nobody was into it when I finally played it for them.

Some of the requests for older songs were actually good, since I don't get to play songs like Boosie "Swerve" and Bun B "Pop it for Pimp" in L.A. too much.

Yea, crazy that y'all mentioned Trap Queen in the Fall, and I didn't think it was going to be a hit nationwide. I had some out of town crowds all weekend, and that was the main song they all requested and responded the most to. I'd say it's replaced Coco, No type, IDFWU, and Hot nigga. And it's bigger than "Know yourself" for sure, more energy.

Now, for the hit that I didn't expect, but loved? King Kunta...seems like it's somehow forced itself in the club. They did a damn line dance to it when I played it Friday.

It's......so yeah, I am in L.A., and it does sound just like a DJ Quik beat (and a Suga Free song). Hell, I always blend it with "Get nekkid"...but here's a video of me playing it for a 30-40 crowd that was mainly from the South and East Coast...they did this dance to it: instagram.com (That's Get nekkid underneath)

But thing is, it's the biggest album out right now for sure...so people will ask to hear songs from it just because they like it, even though nothing but possibly "Alright" is even halfway made to be in the club. And especially in L.A., it's gonna work.

Yea the hook is just waaaaaaay too corny. The beat works enough, but yeah.

Like even "Ayo" works for Urban crowds, even though it's not a favorite of theirs. I think "Nothin like me" could be bigger on that side.

A girl tonight asked for Future "Trap n's"...I just listened and it's slow, like 80 BPM but lower energy slow, but I feel like it miiiiight catch on for some crowds.

Another girl asked for Juvenile and Mannie Fresh "MILF"....this song is def interesting. It's basically an EDN-Twerk song like a Lil Jon "Bend ova" but they rap the verses. It's.....I donno, I think it'll work with the right crowd and energy, even as a brand new song, but I wouldn't gamble on dropping it just yet.

And yeah....King Kunta may not be a 100% guaranteed club banger, but I heard from three other DJ's that it's working great for them too. The fellas seem to like it more since its a rappity type song, but girls definitely groove to it, especially L.A. Ones.

I had ignored it, but E-40 "That's right" produced by Mike Free (Mustard's co-producer). Features Ty Dolla Sign, I feel it's a bit too West Coast, but goes. Same as E-40 and Boosie "Money sack"

Loverance "On her" is nice too, same vibe.

I recommend checking LoveRance's entire album, Freak Show Rancey. Most of the tracks have some sort of potential, mostly because they are at that ratchet tempo. If you have to dig deep, it's worth being armed with the entire album.

Dropped All Day the week it came out, I got this reaction "I don't know what the hell this song is but it sounds like kanye so I'll dance to it anyway" dropped it after Coco, the room fell flat to be honest.

Dropped it a few days ago, a little bit of a warmer reaction, but still miles of where it should be. I remember dropping niggas in Paris when it was first released and getting a similar reaction.

It just takes time. Hurry up and learn the damn song !

Yea, shockingly it's not really a hit at all. Might not even make it.

Actually reminds me of when "Theraflu" came out....that track NEVER got big. I thought it was gonna be a hit, sounding just like "Paris"...but then Mercy dropped a few days later and became the biggest song of the summer. I thought Theraflu had more energy too, but I guess it wasn't catchy enough, and needed a hook?

Genasis "The flyest" is typical slow trap, surely not Coco but I like the energy n bounce to it. Drums go hard when the verse starts

Seems like it. For L.A., you can drop anything that's dope and sounds like a Mustard beat, and people will dance and even ask what it is...such as Jae Murphy/Game/Problem "You playin"...but ANYTHING slow? Anything under 90 BPM, but especially under 75? Almost no chance that they react the first time they hear it.

Also, Twerk type songs almost always work right away, but it hasn't been many of those. I remember playing K-Stylis "Hands up get low" a WHOLE LOT in 2011, and crowds that never heard it would respond immediately to it.

Hasn't been a whole lot new, but off hand without my laptop, here's some from the last 7-8 years or so....

K-Stylis - Booty me down
Audio Push - Clap it up
Audio Push - Throw it back
5th Ward Weebie ft. Lil Wayne - Bend it ova
YG - Patty cake
YG - Left right
DJ Mustard ft. Boosie, Wayne, YG, Big Sean - Face down
Travis Porter - Ayy ladies
Travis Porter - Bring it back
DJ Jubilee - Get it ready (18 years old and STILL goes, even with crowds who never heard it)
Lil Kee - Low 2 da flo
Lil Kee - Up down
Problem - D2B (L.A. style)
Problem - Take ya tights off (also more L.A.)
DJ Big-O - Pop that (Remix) (basically a Jersey club version of French "Pop that")
Travis Porter - Cake (slower bouncy Twerk, same as Tyga "Lap dance" and "Make it rain")
Trina ft. Killer Mike - Look back at it
Lil Wayne - Dick pleaser
T.I. ft. Lil Wayne - Ball
2 Chainz - Used to
Plies - Feet to the ceiling
Plies - Ride dick so good
Back that azz up (Twerk remix, from last year)
Tyga - Bouncin on my dick
YG - Pop it
DJ Unk - Don't hide dat pussy

So that's a good amount that's somewhat recent...even 5-7 year old songs like this don't get played out because they don't all hit radio, and still sound modern.

And then of course, that entire 98-05 set still works for my crowds....Choppa style, Back that azz up, Whistle while you twerk, Shake that monkey, I need a hot girl, Rock the boat, Badd, Saltshaker, Get low, Georgia Dome, Gimmie that (Webbie), Slob on my knob, etc etc.

A lot of New Orleans Bounce tracks work even outside of the South, just because of the energy, and because they sound like Back that azz up to unfamiliar ears.

Yea man. It's funny when L.A. native DJ's open, sometimes you'll ONLY hear 95+ BPM for that whole two hours. Trap is only played when the energy is waaaaaaaaaay up

Great list! It lets me know we're on the same page but it doesn't help me much. I agree about the older songs still working in theory but my ratchet crowd dosent really seem to dig em. ai get tons of hood rat chicks demanding music they can 'twerk' to and when I play Travis porter or back that ass up I get an eye roll and a 'nah not this again'. I keep explaining that as far as I know there hasent been much new in that dept and Id be happy to take a request but they dont seem.to know either.

BTW webbie - bounce that and pimp c - pop it for pimp should be on that list
R-Tistic 6:57 PM - 24 April, 2015
^Yea Pop it for pimp def goes...it never got big response when I played it in L.A 08-09, but I played it at the NSBE convention last month, which is mainly Texas folks...they got HYYYYYYPE. And it could be like I said, L.A. prefers 95 BPM+ type songs, just like New Orleans and Florida seem to.

N half those songs are on a mix I made two years ago called "Now that's what I call ratchet" - soundcloud.com and someone asked for Vol 2....I was like "Give me ten newer songs to put on" and they couldn't give me but two that weren't even ratchet, like Juicy J "Low"

I must admit though, when i played it last night, the whole damn club got up and start doing a dance to it. ....nice sp in to the Super Mario beat...young crowds love it for some reason so I'll spin in during Prom Season

Okay first off this thread is great, I spin in Tucson Arizona which is a big Air Force/College town. My crowds are usually more trendy urban kids ages 18-25 from everywhere in the US so I have to stay on top of whats hot from pretty much everywhere.

Some songs that are really working for me at the moment.

T Wayne - Nasty Freestyle (As soon as the verse starts the crowd knows what time it is)
Fetty Wap - My Way ( Started getting request about 3 weeks ago, will blow with the Drake co sign)

Pretty much anything from Future's last 3 mixtapes (Beast Most, Monster, 56 Nights) - Trap N****s, Lay Up, Peacoat

K Camp feat Ty$ - Shoutout my B***s
Trey Songz - Slow Motion
Que - Stick Up Kid
Da Boy Dame - Do Ya
Jidenna - Classic Man (Cool track with a good beat, Getting crazy radio play out here)
Rich Homie Quan - Flex (picking up more steam every week)
Kevin Gates feat. K Camp - Break the B**** Down

Been hearing about Boogie - OMGoodnes - I've given it a few spins but no traction out here yet,but I do think it will blow

Wrong. Infiltrate and Who Am I are both on the Playground riddim. Who Am I was the last song to be recorded on that riddim. Bookshelf riddim has "Deport Dem" by Sean & "Bookshelf" by Beenie Man.

But when I heard it, it made me think of the convo a few months back where people were talking about people ripping off Mustard's style, but between this and Show Me....

Influence is cool, I'm not mad about it, (in fact, I feel like he saved the genre a bit in terms of club music) but not everything Mustard has done is completely original.

How much of this shit is bumping in Toronto? Im gigging there this weekend playing mostly EDM, house and stuff but I know Im gonna break some hiphop and of some dancehall but how hip is the audience up there on rap music or should I just stick to the hits or will they know some of these cuts that are not mainstream just curious?
Dj Shamann 10:47 PM - 13 May, 2015
I'm hearing Boogie in cars in my neighborhood etc, but I'm in Scarborough, much different ball game than downtown. You'll hear "hood" tracks an hour after they come out around here, but for the clubs it takes them a little longer (especially if it's the "EDM" audience).

Things like Fetty Wap etc go off because he's getting a push right now (Trap Queen and now with the Drake remix of My Way)

But for that crowd (I think you said Gravity? Which is more of a Z103 crowd from what I understand), I would stay closer to the hits when it comes to new Hip-Hop/Rap.

Krept & Kona, that's an early warmer, if you've got speech game it might work in a quick mix pre-empt to Dancehall (or better yet, coming out of it and going into new Mustard type stuff) but other than that, still just filler (for now)

Remy, you're better off playing more hip-hop from my experience. EDM is alive here but because we have such a diverse population hip-hop really goes off here and everyone no matter how white they are knows the dancehall classics. Shamann makes a good point though, don't try dropping anything crazy and new on them, especially at Gravity. You can play the popular stuff (any Drake track with a bit of energy will pop off if you time it right).

In Toronto. Scarborough is a borough/district within that has about 700k population, but the opposite of upscale (low income/working class) and on the far east side of the city, so nobody but Scarborough people party here because the rest of the city thinks it's trashy/unsafe.

Where he was DJing was like the main strip of a club district attached to a tourist area, where everybody from the city parties at. That club has ties to a Top 40 radio station so the music is a little more mainstream. A lot more bros and duckface selfies in bottle service going on. You can still play Hip-Hop, but it takes them a bit longer to catch on.

Most club hits are Regional before they break out Nationwide, especially from lesser known artists. A Kanye or Big Sean track will hit everyone the same day, but a lotta songs take longer to bubble. It's so many times I'd hear a song in NY, ATL, or Florida, and then hear it in L.A. months later.

Some Florida heat :

anything Kodak Black , 4th quarter his biggest song . Hip Hop Audience between 16-23 ( Broward county )

Jersey Club Music - BBE Challenge , Pony Remix , Show me love Remix , Lil Man Anthem

Fetty Wap and Future work very well here

Nasty Freestyle doing well

a lot of music coming out the west right now but nothing that seems like a real hit. gonna need the southern and east coast guys to let us know if any of the new LA ish gets poppin out there

Yea...it really hasn't been many L.A. songs to really hit in the clubs nationwide in a while, really since YG's album. Even "Backflip" doesn't get as much play anywhere else like I thought it would. "King Kunta" is huge here, and I hear that some crowds outside of L.A. dig it, but not sure how much.

I am gonna go through all these tracks later on, but yea, I haven't really heard anything new being played at the club that's from here. "Thuggin" and "Get rich" seem like the only ones.

music is seriously stale right now. requests for "Trap Queen" has hit obnoxious levels also! made me completely sick of the song.

yea Trap queen is still prime time its gonna burn through most of the summer a lot of people are still just hearing it. Plus I feel bad for DJs who have to play the same genre all night music would be pretty stale by now.

theres a drake remix out there somewhere and theres a snippet online. I think its a terrible track but theres a strong chance it blows up if the drake verse drops

Omarion - I'm Up ft. Kid Ink & French Montana

If this isnt produced by Nic Nac then its a nic nac sound alike. Its a smash with the same formula of those 90 bpm mustard esque beats

I actually haven't gone thru his project yet, but haven't seen anything pop off from it yet. "Hollywood niggs" has a dope beat, but not really a club track. And nah, Shaka Zulu feels like his version of "Energy" but it wouldn't go too hard here, not hype enough

And so nothing from Tyga. IMO I didn't find anything club banger worth from Lil Wayne's Free Weezy Album. And I haven't heard Meek Mill's new album yet.

Hyphy songs still go hard with the right crowd. Especially the classics like "Hoes in here" and "Super hyphy" along with the obvious Tell me when to go/Blow the whistle. I even played "Not my job" in Hollywood on Sunday.

Eh...with Tyga, doesn't sound like it. I skimmed through Wayne, didn't hear any club banger. Same for Meek, he has some decent songs and a few might scrape club play, but surely nothing near I'm a boss/Dreams and nightmares or even "House party." That song with Nicki is more radio or even end of the night.

Yea, overall, it's kind of a slow time for club music. The last big rush in club hits was last summer to early fall.

see this thread is for DJs who actually know how to DJ and we just share what songs work in our area. More or less this is not for DJs who just dont feel like digging for the records. If you been doing this for a little while you should be able to pick out what will work and what wont. Besides this thread is already full of hiphop/ratchet gems anyways so all you really have to do now is read the thread.

This YG "Twist my fingaz" produced by Terrace Martin is sure to be a L.A. hit. I think it's too West Coast to blow anywhere else though, but I hope it does

I'm feeling that one. Reminds me of battlecat beats sprinkled with some quik.
I'll test it with my Seattle crowd, but it might take months to take off up here.

Lol I was jus about to say it reminded me of some old school quick. It's a very regional track, the bay is only 6 hours away, but it'll fur sure take some time for people here to catch on to it, if they do.

If you're in Gainesville, then yeah, I doubt it'll work.

But I really donno...the reaction from this is so good, even in the South and East, that it MIIIIIGHT actually break through and get love! I feel like it's so West Coast, that other Regions might actually dig it on a nostalgic tip, since everyone used to like G-Funk in 92-95.

LoL I posted this song a while back in this thread. Being form the bay I'm happy to see this track get so much exposure. It's already bubbling in the LA underground according so some homies but I can't wait until it gets on the radio there.
Dj Shamann 8:02 PM - 18 July, 2015
What do you guys think about this? It's still poppy and the chorus a bit cliche, but it's still a mile better than anything else from their catalog in the last decade.

I have a mixed age crowd tonight, half people that will remember these songs, half that won't have a clue, should be interesting.
djpuma_gemini 8:58 PM - 18 July, 2015
I'm dropping that BEP tonight.
I'm feeling it, but that's cause I grew up on all the songs they sampled. It's definitely a great track to mix into any of those samples.

Im a huge fan of this track so its a win in my book, hood crowds under 25 wont dig this but probably 30 and up will
DJ Marv the Maverick 3:57 PM - 19 July, 2015
How did they clear those samples?
DJ Remy USA 4:48 PM - 19 July, 2015
You have to imagine that Will I AM is well connected in the industry and can get his samples cleared

My thoughts exactly - haven't heard that many samples in a tune since Twin Hype

Wonder if they will make a profit after sample clearance but tune is nice way to get their Pop assss back on the map
DCD 10:10 PM - 19 July, 2015
Right? I'm assuming six figures at the minimum to clear all of those samples.

Future's entire album is fire!

- Where Ya At

- Trap Ni**as

- F**** Up Some Commas

- Freak H**

- Blow a bag

Right now, Commas is the only track that I hear from the album with radio play, but hopefully it can be like Drake's IYRTITL where you hear multiple tracks from the project on the radio at the same time.

So DJ Mustard is supposed to drop a mixtape this Thursday, I am thinking it'll be some club bangers on there. "10 Summers" didn't go as hard as I wanted it to, but a few songs got some play.

I also heard that YG won't have anything produced by Mustard on his next album, but they'll get back together for the album after this.
