2016 Reggae, Dancehall & Soca Thread

Matterhorn 10:36 PM - 11 January, 2016
Just came back from Jamaica and the tunes running it down there are:

Look At Me Know - Nesbeth
Gain The Work - Jamiel
Shabba Madda Pot - Dexta Daps (older but still getting massive forwards in dances)
Real Rich - Tanto Blacks
ATM - Alkaline
Champion Boy - Alkaline
Fade Away - Romain Virgo & Assassin (heard this one a lot especially on radio)
Anabella - Vybz Kartel
Rasta Party - Bugle
Gas - Ding Dong (dancer tune)
Get There - Chi Ching Ching (dancer tune)
Aji Bounce - Bling Dawg (dancer tune)

There are a couple others I can't remember at the moment.

Also predicting this is going to be the year of Dexta Daps. Really like the tunes he's been putting out.
Matterhorn 10:43 PM - 11 January, 2016

Where do y'all get all these tunes? I always have trouble staying on top of these genres because I can rarely find legitimate sources. Johnny Wonder ( @jwonder21) on twitter posts iTunes links to some of these tunes and franchise record pool has a neat collection but for the most part I struggle to find new soca and dancehall.

Record pools, relationships with producers & artist, PR blasts etc. Dancehall, Reggae & Soca require a lot of work to keep up with.

But there's nothing like the crowd reaction you get when you play that hit record. Dancehall crowds got the most respect for what we go through as djs I think. They still respect the DJ, unlike a lot of other genres.

True. There is also the "money pull up" appreciation. Saw a selecta earn $1,000 US in money pull ups for a 90 min set once.

How are you guys figuring out which riddim is hot or not? We're getting Riddims just about every other day. Are you basing it on what JA considers as hot? I have riddims that I consider hot but no one plays them.
Bigga Bounce Ent 12:37 AM - 25 March, 2016
If it's hot in JA it's hot here (Urban Toronto) like the week after. I personally give you whats hittin in the bashment clubs as I see a positive response for it.

I do a mixture of both. I'll play what's hot in JA and mix it in with some of what I like. I don't play straight bashment parties anymore so I can get away with it. Honestly it all depends on where you are in the world. Some places strictly follow what's hot in JA (T Dot & NYC for example) other places in the world have their own rules (Germany, Russia, Poland etc). I've heard shit play in the EU that I would NEVER play in a million years.

Dj Shamann 10:55 PM - 14 June, 2016
Yes Soca crew, I'm about to start looking through the stuff you guys put up but wanted to ask about some current stuff with a certain vibe.

See like, Machel Montano "Waiting On The Stage" and tracks like that may be hits but they're just not my vibe, it wouldn't fly at the spots I play either.

The stuff I do like is more compatible with chunes like Flipo "Oh Gosh", older riddims like Antilles.

Thing is where I live and play, we have lots of West Indians, meaning there're lots of Caribbean night spots already. So the people that want to hear Soca all night go to the Trini, Guyanese, Bajan spots anyway.

The people that come to my spot are a mixed crowd that prefers Dancehall and R&B/Hip-Hop. But for the people that want to hear a little Soca, I would like to throw some in there.

Stuff that won't piss off the Dancehall crowd, but is a nice balance to some of the absolute vulgar shit coming out of DH right now. The majority of the crowd is late 20s-mid 30s. Still we do have a handful of younger people that still enjoy the vibe.

If you could help out with a handful of tracks to point me in the right direction, I can take it from there. It doesn't have to be brand new, just modern, currently playable.

Respect.
DJ Andre 6:39 PM - 29 June, 2016
I agree with Shamann. I DJ at this club called Forty2 on Saturday nights and on some Saturdays, I am in the Reggae/Soca/Old School Room. The crowd is a young crowd but still prefer soca from 2010-2014 and the newer reggae.
Dj Shamann 6:26 PM - 12 July, 2016
So what's up with Charly Black's "Party Animal"? I've had that since 2014, I heard it hit Billboard. Is it just picking up steam now?

Looks like the video just dropped last week, but someone mentioned this song back in January.

So what's up with Charly Black's "Party Animal"? I've had that since 2014, I heard it hit Billboard. Is it just picking up steam now?

I thought the same thing just a week ago when I was downloading new music. I played the track and was like, " wait, I heard this before and the riddim looks familiar"

Went in my crates and that song has been sitting there forever. I always heard the song but never played that or the riddim.

Yeah I looked back and realized it was in a folder I had for a 2014 mix but it never made the cut, then I saw that I already had the video since May and had already forgotten about it again.

Any ideas?

Vendetta / Gully / Unruly beef is not doing any good for Popcaan's output. In my opinion, his party songs have far more guts then any of this (exception for a track like Rup Rup, which still sounded less like a beef song back then). The OVO/Unruly connection is sure to bring out some hits, so I wouldn't give up on Popcaan just yet.

Those are old tracks. Fully aware of what he's been doing crossover wise/internationally. He's always been able to balance full on dancehall with his other stuff but the balance wasn't there in this past year.

exactly what i am saying sometimes the artiste so busy touring, they got no time to voice on the top projects and these producers will put out the project without them. plus konshens is a man that travel with his street team so if he on road aint really got anyone pushing his songs in the streets

Hey all--love the lists posted here.
Have been a DJ for years, just recently taking the talents out of the closet and into the market.
I've recently become fascinated with dancehall/soca music, especially the method with releasing riddims/albums/mixtapes/singles etc etc etc.
I am in SoFL, Palm Beach County to be specific. I am not in the community where it's easy to hear about dancehall, so if any of you know of any local halls, please let me know. A simple "night" won't do it for me. Let me know!

really bredren??? you live in south Florida - just turn on the radio, drive to a local patty or roti shop and pick up the flyers, etc.

there is no place in all of North America with as much happening in terms of reggae and soca stuff.

You need to come out of Palm Beach County and hit up Broward or Dade. Although there are few things happening occasionally on Okeechobee Blvd you may wanna go South. Lauderdale Lakes, Lauderhill, Melrose, Pembroke, Miramar, Doral, really any place south of Palm Beach. Too many events to name.

Like Redselector said, you can go into pretty much any caribbean store or restaraunt and you will be greeted with a plethora of fliers/events. It's pretty much an oversaturated market with so many events going on. I'm an old dude so the only spot you may catch me is Tropics (friday or sat nights) in Miramar if I'm not playing out.

Thanks

Mr Killa - Bam Bam

the track was meant to be a riddim but the other artist never jumped on it so I guess it is only a single.

See this article on it.

Shoot, I'm going to try and link somebody. It must remixed.
DJ Quartz 4:11 PM - 9 January, 2017
Correction... Must get remixed.
DJ Quartz 4:30 PM - 9 January, 2017
Actually I might be able to piece one together, but I'm going to hit them up for an instrumental still.

Does anyone know the song that sounds like the lyrics are " let them go". 2 male signers, 1 sounds like red rat ..higher pitch voice. It has a reggae dancehall feel to the riddim.

Thanks

Yes Soca crew, I'm about to start looking through the stuff you guys put up but wanted to ask about some current stuff with a certain vibe.

Stuff that won't piss off the Dancehall crowd, but is a nice balance to some of the absolute vulgar shit coming out of DH right now. The majority of the crowd is late 20s-mid 30s. Still we do have a handful of younger people that still enjoy the vibe.

I agree a lot of pussyclaat tune in DH past couple years - turned me off pretty hard. That's what I call it anyway, that vulgar shit.

Yo sorry I missed this post. There really is no other track on this riddim. So you might really have to make it up.
DJ Quartz 2:24 PM - 23 January, 2017
Yeah I just set a 8-bar loop in the bridge. I've been playing it to see the reaction in my residency.

It was received well, especially for a place that is not exposed nor understand Soca other than Follow the Leader, ha ha

Lots of decent Dancehall in January-February. Too many to list right now. Making a tracklist for my monthly podcast and having a hard time narrowing everything down to one hour

No doubt. Most DJs in T&T are left playing catch up with dancehall and hip hop after carnival.
