Hey,

Could you please get me the full crash report from here: serato.com and attach it instead of copying it?

Also, do these crashes happen after a certain amount of time? After playing certain songs? On start up or when connecting controller?

Have you made any changes to your system / library / setup recently?

Hi Sam,

The file is attached. The two incidents when this happened were about 2 hours playing into the night on both occasions. When the first crash occurred in the previous week, I just deleted the video file since it was the first time I had played the file all the way through even tho the overview was built. The second crash in the following week occurred with a video file that I had already played all the way through in the past. At the end of the gig, I analyzed all my video files again just to be safe but no errors/corruptions could be found. I have ran disk utility on the external firewire 800 drive that holds my vids and all seems to be well. I really do not know what is going on exactly here! I have not made any changes to the system / library / setup since I have started Serato Video. Please let me know what I should do next. Thank you for your time and happy holidays!!!

Any update? I am gonna using Serato DJ tomorrow and honestly would like to try to figure this out before then.

Sam GG 10:22 PM - 29 December, 2013
Hey Peeti-V,

Did both of these videos come from the same folder on your external drive? If you check each file location do you have read and write permissions?

Also, go through these steps: serato.com as it could be your computer trying to initiate a harddrive sleep.

Yes same file location and yes read and write permissions. I also checked those steps and my computer is not enabled to put hard disks to sleep when possible. I am using one hard drive with two partitions. One partition is just for my serato videos and the other partition is a bootable clone of my system just in case of internal hard drive failure. I have included pics to show what I mean.
Peeti-V 10:24 PM - 3 January, 2014
I did remember one thing that I had changed from the past. Originally the external hard drive was just for my serato video library. Recently, I created a second partition on the drive to create a bootable backup in case of internal hard drive failure. This would have changed the original partition size where my serato videos are stored. Not sure if this matters at all.

Can you try analyzing your entire library by clicking "Analyze Files" while holding down COMMAND on your keyboard.

Once this is done can you remove all corrupt files? They will show with a Lightning bolt in the first column.
Peeti-V 12:58 AM - 7 January, 2014
Will do. What is different when you hold down command and press analyze files vs not holding down command.
Serato, Support
Sam GG 10:25 PM - 8 January, 2014
Holding down command forces the software to re-analyse ALL the files in your library while just clicking the button will only analyse the files which haven;t been analysed yet.
Peeti-V 10:30 PM - 8 January, 2014
Ok well I did this a few days ago. I will keep you posted. There were 7 files with the lightning strike but they were all mp3s and have not been played in over a year.

Sorry I did not see this until now. I am still having issues however, I have the most recent versions of Serato DJ, Serato Video, and Pitch n Time plugin. The only change I have done is move my video library to my internal drive so there is no longer an external hard drive. I received a crash last night with a video I have played many times before. Not sure why this is still going on. Any help is appreciated.

Did analyzing all the files like suggested in the earlier posts help at all?

Hey Peeti-V,

Do you have Perian installed: www.perian.org - Get the perian 1.2.3 codec installed and let me know if that helps with the crashes.

Also, have you been through these steps: serato.com I linked them earlier.

Hey,

Can you try getting about 10 or 30 tracks and re-encoding them with this program: serato.com Make sure you use the preset that we include.

Try having a mix with a these tracks only and let me know how you go.

Had another crash last night. This time it was with mp3s. Same behavior with the unexpected quit of serato dj. I play these two songs every week and have never had a problem before. My crash log is attached. I really need to figure out what is going on. Could it be the usb cable by any chance?

Yes, the database could be corrupt and only causing issues with Serato DJ. I still recommend going through those steps.

I went ahead and rebuilt the database. However, I got another crash last night. Serato DJ Crashed and Serato Video stayed open. I only use Serato DJ with my controller for gigs where I have to bring my equipment. I average one crash each night with Serato DJ and still do not even know why. My two other residencies, I use Serato Scratch Live with turntables/cdjs and have not had a crash in years. Could you please tell me what the crash log is saying in regards to the problem.

Hey Peeti-V,

Do you use iTunes at all? If so have you tried disabling your iTunes library from Serato DJ?
Peeti-V 1:23 AM - 29 April, 2014
I use iTunes for mp3s but use mp4s directly in Serato with no iTunes. Does this matter?
Serato, Support
Sam GG 10:54 PM - 30 April, 2014
Sorry, what I meant was when you open Serato DJ can you see your iTunes playlists etc? Do you use iTunes to organise your Serato DJ music library in app?

If so can you try disabling it when your controller is disconnected?

Also can you try using Serato DJ 1.6.2: serato.com
Peeti-V 3:13 AM - 1 May, 2014
Yes I can see my iTunes playlist and yes I use iTunes to organize audio for Serato but not for videos. I use videos straight in Serato. I now have the latest update of Serato DJ installed. What am I looking for when I disable iTunes in Serato?
Serato, Support
Sam GG 12:05 AM - 2 May, 2014
I wanted to see if your machine still crashed after eliminating your iTunes library from the picture. You can disable it by opening Serato DJ > Setup > DJ Preferences and un-ticking the iTunes library option.

I also want you to first try removing Perian from your computer. Open the System Preferences. Select the Perian pane and 'Remove.' Now 'Show All' preference panes, control-click the Perian pane and 'Remove "Perian" Preference Pane.

Once that is done can you please try updating to the latest version of Quicktime and then restarting your machine.

Let me know how you go,

Sam

I had 3 unexpected quits last night at my gig. Sounded like a damn rookie. These unexpected quits happened while reading iTunes library and also while reading iTunes library was disabled. After having a discussion with some of my dj peers, they said that it is a known issue that serato dj can't handle big libraries. I have under 32,000 tracks in my library which read perfectly fine in serato itch and still reads perfectly fine in serato scratch live.

I do not understand why serato dj would have less of a threshold in reading large music databases. It makes absolutely no sense why this would have been changed.

Anyways, I found the beta version for Serato DJ 1.6.3.7190 and tried it after my gigs. I am still experiencing unexpected quits even with the beta version and have no idea what to do. I really need this fixed as I am a professional DJ and this is clearly unacceptable. I have been dealing with this for months now. Attached are the crash logs. I am also attaching my .xml file if that helps at all.

Hey Peeti-V,

By any chance when you are DJing do you swap between videos and MP3's? Do you use your Media crate to assign videos to MP3's?

Let me know,

Sam
Peeti-V 1:07 AM - 14 May, 2014
Yes I do
Peeti-V 1:27 AM - 14 May, 2014
I just ran it for 10+ hours with itch and it had no problems whatsoever.
Serato, Support
Sam GG 9:18 PM - 18 May, 2014
Ok, that helps.

It sounds to me like your media crate is possibly corrupt and that could be causing the issue, this is a relatively easy fix.

What I need you to do is to firstly open up Serato DJ and create a new crate, called “Media backup”. Now drag all the files from your Media crate to the Media backup crate. Once this is done connect a piece of hardware to activate Serato DJ, now open the video panel, click the X-F button and then turn off your Media crate.

Now close down Serato DJ.

When the program is closed you need to navigate to your _Serato_ folder. You should find this in your main music directory and also in the root drive of any other hard drive that you use for DJing. In each _Serato_ folder you will need to open the subfolder named “Subcrates”, inside this folder have a look for a crate called “Media”, move this file to your desktop or delete it. Now open up Serato DJ once more with your hardware disconnected. Drag your Media Backup crate to the analyse files button to double check that there are no corrupt files in that crate. Once you have analysed all the files remove any corrupt ones and then activate your Media crate once more and drag and drop the files from the backup crate and move them to your new media crate.

This should solve your crashes :) Let me know how you go,

Sam
