Trying to pull a list of Disco songs that are the best of the best... I have tons in my collection, but I am having a hard time thinking of them... be nice if all of them had disco as the genre... but they dont.

So, What songs are at the top of your list for all time fav Disco songs?
Rebelguy 10:48 PM - 7 January, 2013
So you have them in your collection but you don't know what they are?

DJ Val-BKNY11203 1:15 AM - 8 January, 2013
One of the first rules of DJing...know your music. I would Google top Disco songs and go through your library to compare what you got. I don't know how old you are but if you are old enuff you should be able to rattle the big hits off pretty easy.

Delete the entire library, then rebuild it only using only tracks you know.

That should clear out about 100k tracks that are useless to you, and you won't need to ask silly questions on the Internet any more.

Nah, screw it.

I understand that in the Internet age mobile jocks need a lot of music, but even if they're jusr for requests, having tracks in your library that you don't know is just weak. How do you know they aren't shit quality? Or don't have swearing in? Or dont't cut off half-way through the chorus?

Part of a DJ's job is to know their library. Period.

I have an idea. Why don't you list the ones you know and we will help fill in the blanks.

I am not trying to be a dick but to me it sounds like you are a newbie dj trying to get information. If that's the case fine, just say that because your reasoning for posting this question sounds ridiculous.

Man, I've seen some whacked out DJ's recently that have no clue what is in their music library. This thread really brought this to a head! :) I am trying to clean house myself, but thanks for the extra motivation!

Reminds me of shopping at Lowe's or Home Depot and asking some 17 yr old kid where they drywall sanders are. They just look at you like they don't have a clue, then tell you to check isle 89 while they drone off in the opposite direction!

Thank you! I greatly appreciate it. You don't just do a google search and find stuff like that.

I asked here because we're all DJ's... and in general DJ's are known for helping eachother (Unless they see eachother as competition, if i lived in FL i'd be afraid of getting shot). Going to google will find all the songs that people have heard a million times. May as well say Celebration is my fav song of all time... (it's not)

It isnt all quality, i've had to transfer hard drives many times. when hard drives were only 60 gb, I couldnt have all of my songs as MP3's, from back then I do have some songs that were 192 bitrate. With all of the hard drive transfers as hard drives got larger, some files have popped up as corrupt. I delete as I come accross issues or low quality files.

I am curious how many people know their whole libary when it has even 20,000 songs. I'm sure you couldnt name every song that it has, even if it is organized to perfection.

My dedication is pretty simple. I typically have a song that anyone requests. If not, and I like it, I buy it.

To everyone who is helpful, thanks...

To everyone who was not, at least you cared enough to write something...

What does that have to do with it? You said you have tons of Disco, yet you can't think of any, how about going through them and picking what's good? I don't care if I have 100 million songs in my library, if someone asks me to randomly play 90s Hip Hop, I'm not going to say "sorry, I have millions of songs, i won't be able to play that for you"

if this is the case, why have so many songs?

I'm sure you'll say 90s Hip Hop is easy compared to Disco, but the point is it's not a continually growing genre (excluding House/Revival stuff), you can add on to it with forgotten gems, but 1978 is still 1978, the amount of songs from other genres that have come out since then is not going to change that.

This is what happens when you hit the internet and download music from other people, you end up not knowing your own library.

DJ Benny B NYC 12:06 AM - 9 January, 2013
Ok I'll help you.

listen to all the songs on your list and when you find stuff you like, seek out more. after months of listening, buying and researching you will be able to dj a good disco set. learn the obvious songs first, then listen to the ones suggested in this thread after.

i dont know how many of those songs you are familiar with or how old you are, but even djs who dont like or play disco know most of those songs. those are some of the biggest songs ever.

and a big part of djing is STUDYING music. youre talking to dudes who have been studying music for 10 or 20 years. And if you know house music or hip-hop, if you really know the origins, then you know disco.

i mean, i dont know why you were asking this? if its because you are djing a party THIS weekend and they asked for you to play some disco along with other stuff, just play like 3 or 4 songs and keep it moving. play a song off the off the wall album, 2 chic songs and something else.. thats the best help you can get really. if youre supposed to dj an entire set of disco, you better let someone else do it.
Dj Shamann 12:46 AM - 9 January, 2013
I'm sorry Free Man but I'm still laughing at this.

Name 120,000 songs, mark get set go..

When's the last time you had to name 120, 000 songs for ANY night? On a given 4-5 hour night where you're not only playing 15 seconds of songs (something you wouldn't do with Disco) you'd only have to name 120 songs, not 120k.

When I originally read that you had already lost me so I disregarded the rest until now when I just realized...

Quote:
finding 2 hours of disco is like a 15 min pop set.

Quote:
I can name quite a few, but i cant name 2 hours worth.

This is only for a 2 hour night? LOL, so what... 40-50 songs maybe? Out of an astounding 120k library that should be nothing.

Quote:
I am still hoping for some favs or people around here who may have something that wouldnt be on a most popular list.

That's when you go through the "tons" of Disco" you already have and pick your own favs, since at that point it's not about "most popular". Throw those in with the corny list and 2 hours shouldn't be that hard to do, if it is, Disco might not be your thing.

The more I see these kinds of questions, the more I wonder if anyone listens to their music anymore?

Go through you disco tracks and pick out what you like.

If you haven't labeled your disco tracks, that's on you. Spend a evening or two going through your 110 - 125 bpm tracks and pick out the disco and then label them.

Even easier, make a smart playlist in itunes or smart crate in serato and exclude genres you have tagged like "top 40" or "hip hop" and you'll have an easier list to work with.

If you don't have any of your songs tagged properly, then that's definitely your own fault.

Dude you are hilarious. If you are playing disco...they WANT the most obvious. They don't want some obscure track that's not popular.

And since you seem to be content with that list, with everything you already looked at. You should know it's shit if you don't have Cerrone or Alec Costadinos on it not once.

Though the thread backfired, there is some dope stuff in here. I just started learning this genre. Got into newer disco house lately and I've been wanting to learn more. This music is awesome. I was scratching my head when I saw Madonna's Holiday on that list. Had to look it up on wikipedia to see what genre that song is labeled as, and it wasn't disco.

A few more:
Love Sensation - Loleatta Holloway/Salsoul Orchestra - One of the most sampled
Let Me Take You Dancing - Bryan Adams - Before they decided to market him as Rock
Rock Your Baby - George Mcrea - considered to be one of the first Disco songs

The problem is that many of these up and coming DJs did not grow up musically - they just decided one day to be a DJ. I have always been atuned to music - just in the course of growing up I knew the songs of my generation, along with 2-3 generations before me. Not that you should know every semi-obscure song from every generation, but you should be a lot more knowledgeable about music in general than the average person on the street...

The funniest part is if they asked for disco but meant funk, show up with all this disco and they wanted funk. The hardest part about people is they "name" something but don't know what that means. Disco is my specialty. That is all I play. I was a disco DJ back in the 70's. I have over 70 classic disco mixes here: www.house-mixes.com some of them have a track list. My best mix is probably this one: www.house-mixes.com it is a two hour set of disco classics that is guarantee to keep the dance floor packed. If you need any help, just let me know.

I just died and went to Disco Heaven. Thank you Panotaker!

Your welcome. This mix has been getting a lot of hits too www.house-mixes.com It's a little more funky, but I listed a track list.
