every time i boot up ssl 1.8.1 it reads my tags! It would not be so bad but this means that everytime i wanna use serato I have to turn it on 45 min before I can start playing! Now thats ok when im at home but sometimes I dont have 45 mins before I play at a gig!

This never happened before! I did copy my hd onto a newer hd! reloaded them into i-tunes etc etc. This has been happening for about a month & Im at my wits end as to how to resolve this!

Someone please help me!

Hello Nicky,

Try renaming the databaseV2 file(s).

Rename the databaseV2 files from the 'Scratch LIVE' folder located in your 'Music' or 'My Music' folder on your internal drive, and in your hidden '.ScratchLIVE' folder (if your using 1.8 or earlier) or the _ScratchLIVE_ folder on your external drive (only if you have imported tracks off of an external).

To get to your hidden '.Scratch LIVE' or _ScratchLIVE_ folder, open SSL, click the import tab, highlight your external drive, highlight the .ScratchLIVE or _ScratchLIVE_ folder, and press ctrl+r (PC) or apple+r (Mac).
This will open up a separate browser and show you the contents of that hidden .Scratch LIVE or _ScratchLIVE_ folder on your external.
From here keep that browser window open and quit SSL completely and then rename the databaseV2 file in the separate browser window to something like 'databaseV2_corrupt".
Open SSL.

You tags will build again. Once done shut down SSL and reopen it.
That should take care of your problem:)

Nicky Blunt 11:16 AM - 15 June, 2008
Ok Zach, so I did that to my external because I dont keep any mp3's on my lappy itself.

It seemed fine, however none of my dots had colour so i re-scanned the tags (took about an hour and a half) & then it starts doing the whole reading on load again.

What Am I doing wrong?

THanks

So your having your original issue again?
If so I suppose you will just need to rebuild the databaseV2 file again.
If the color dots go away when you rebuild your overviews, then you have to rescan the id3 tags to get the color back, and then your songs take forever to load every time you open SSL from then on out then we have a bug on our hands.

You might want to revert back to 1.8 and see if it works any better.
Nicky Blunt 8:41 AM - 17 June, 2008
Ok zach no problem!

I'll try 1.8.0 & see what happens with that!

I'll keep you posted there!
Ben Santo 4:02 PM - 18 June, 2008
Hi Guys,

I'm having the same problem with Serato scanning my tags everytime I open SSL since my update from 1.8.0. to 1.8.1.! I've already followed all the suggestions from above, and have renamed all databaseV2 files from all the scratchlive folders (hidden and visibles) on all drives...

Last options as well for me: Reverting to 1.8: No effect, same thing. Still rescanning everytime... Something seems to go wrong here, sorry!

Surprisingly the problem seems to persist only with the tracks on my HDD (WD 250 GB). The music from C: gets not rescanned... I cannot find any plausible reason for that. Why can the external track databases not be saved properly after shutting down the programm anymore, and even not after reinstalling 1.8.?!

As a full professional and hard working DJ(3 to 5 times a week in the best clubs around Europe), I'm quite dissappointed with this problem.

Despite of this I'm as well really missing the color marks of the songs I played before (this feature could be further elaborated and improved, as it has somemore potential, by the way). Also I read in some posts about this issue, that it might work to completely delete the SSl-folders and rebuild the crates "from scratch", but it took me years to get my setup like this with over 200 GB of rockin' and sorted music!!!

Please don't let me hang as SSL is definitely my favorite tool, and I've put some trust in you guys!!
Thanks a lot

Ben
Nicky Blunt 9:26 AM - 19 June, 2008
Same thing here looks like it is a bug after all!
Nicky Blunt 9:27 AM - 19 June, 2008
Also I have a 500gb western digital would that be just a coincidence?
Ben Santo 9:54 AM - 19 June, 2008
Hey Nicky,
Don't think so...
Why should the external HDD start messing around just after the update installation?!
Looks like a bug in the SSL installation and scratchlive folder overtaking process to me.
Like to know the opinions of our mods about this.
Nicky Blunt 10:02 AM - 19 June, 2008
I just ment that the pair of us have a Western digital is all! Ive been racking my brains about this. It just seems like a logical explanation at the time! But yeah I agree its a bug! reverting back to 1.8.0 had no positive effect either!
Ben Santo 10:38 AM - 19 June, 2008
Poor us ;-)
By the way, cannot any databaseV2save file... could this explain something?
Did your bug appear as well after updating your version?
Ben Santo 10:39 AM - 19 June, 2008
Sorry, I meant:
...cannot find any databaseV2save file...
Nicky Blunt 10:55 AM - 19 June, 2008
yeah my bug appeared right after the upgrade to the 1.8.1 so im guessing its got something to do with that!

However my tag reading did dissapear after I deleted the whole set of back up and stuff!

But none of my coloured dots where there so i re scanned the tags & bingo off it went again!
Ben Santo 1:00 PM - 19 June, 2008
Then, if I get you right, by deleting all scratchlive folders you lost the crates you build as well, didn't you?
That would actually be the biggest issue for me!
That's why I didn't delete my folders up till now!
Thank you for letting me know that the problem will persist beyond this measure...

Shaun W 9:11 PM - 19 June, 2008
Are you both using the label color feature within SSL?
Ben Santo 10:14 PM - 19 June, 2008
Good to read from you, Shaun, as I'm quite under pressure to regain full function of my setup asap...

I'm not fully using the label color feature up till now, but I always found it extremely useful to see my already played tracks turn into green (and I meant before, that this feature could be improved by changing color of tracks e.g. into a slightly lighter kind of green every further 3 times of use or so).

However, the basic color feature is missing now that my hole tags are re-read and build up new everytime I start SSL. I mean the played songs do change to green, but this information is not saved after closing SSL anymore.

Fortunately my current specs still allow me to play my set from the beginning without having to wait for SSL to complete the tag scan process, but the present bugs are really annoying...

By the way, I'm using
Windows XP on PC (Intel Centrino Duo, 2 x 1.6 GB, 2GB Cache, 120 GB HDD)
Never had problems with either SSL 1.7.4. or 1.8. before.

Thanks for helping, mate!

Ben.. I think your referring to something different.
It sounds like, at least in your case, that you just need to rebuild the databaseV2 file.

What I'm trying to figure out regarding Nicky's issue is the color tags disappearing.

Not that the color of his files aren't staying green indicating that he's played the files already.

Please start your own thread and we'll help you in your own thread. This discussion has started to go off topic.
Ben Santo 11:11 PM - 19 June, 2008
Ok...
I thought that the color issue was just a side aspect here...

My main goal is still to prevent my SSl from rescanning the full ID-tags of my collection at every rogramm start!
I therefore renamed and rebuild the databaseV2 already 4 or 5 times, but that didn't help.

If you still recommend me to post this in an own thread, I'll do so.
Thanks & sorry for buggin
Nicky Blunt 9:02 AM - 20 June, 2008
My main goal is still to prevent my SSl from rescanning the full ID-tags of my collection at every programm start!

I also noticed last night that when It does re-scan my tags it is also re-adjusting the date added time & date! I know this to be the case as songs i imported ages ago are still comin up as brand new!

Which is a lil weird too!
Nicky Blunt 9:03 AM - 20 June, 2008
zach also just to clarify the colours re-appeared after the initial re-scan of id tags, but now it does that again on every re-start!

Also ben no worries about th thread jack! ;)
Ben Santo 9:26 AM - 20 June, 2008
Well then, we're apparently on track together again, Nicky ;-)

And yes, added time for re-read tracks gets updated as well on my SSL on every startup... I used to sort my tracks most of the time by this criterium! Not possible anymore...

Quite some minor to medium troubles here with this.
Wonder how many users out there have the same?!
Nicky Blunt 9:29 AM - 20 June, 2008
Yeah to be honest initially i thought It was just me but Im glad to know im not the only one afflicted!

& yeah I used to search by date added too!
Ben Santo 10:07 AM - 20 June, 2008
Found some other posts with similar issues, but haven't come across a feasible solution, yet...
What's your conclusion for the moment, dear mods (Zack & Shaun)?

Zach S 4:51 PM - 20 June, 2008
Just to clarify.. how many drives or partitions do you guys have?
Check by clicking on the import tab and looking at the hard drive icons in the first column.

I think either you guys aren't shutting down SSL prior to renaming the databaseV2 file(s) or there is a databaseV2 file on one of your drives/partitions that you either haven't renamed or may not even know exists.

Let me know and we'll go from there.
Rane, Support
Zach S 4:55 PM - 20 June, 2008
This issue has been around forever and should easily be fixed as long as we find the correct databaseV2 file(s) to rename and we make sure to rename them while SSL is completely quit.

The color tags getting erased is a new bug to us and one that we need to figure out.
Nicky Blunt 2:28 PM - 21 June, 2008
Zach just to clarify, the data on my coloured dot's did not get erased, It just was not showing, when I re scanned the tags they all popped back in again.

Zach how do i check that out with regards to partitions.

Sorry im a computer dunce!

Thanks again for all your assistance

Ok, this should be good for a laugh, and I'm sure the question has already been asked but I am far too PC illiterate to have seen the question more than likely. I am now getting a huge delay when loading a track onto the digital turntables. It takes like 8 seconds to load, the gray ring starts moving clockwise and I stand there thinking about suicide, ugh (JK). This just started happening. I didn't do anything new or diferrent. I take that back, I used a converter to make some tracks into mp3's. Could that be why? I've been a DJ since 83' and I figured it was time to move up, and show off the skills with some help. I hope this is just a glitch on my part. Any help would be much appreciated. I have my system set up so that SSL is a huge part of my set, but now I may have to make it a side note until I figure this out :( Sincerely, DJ Ikon * BombP / Ikon Klassix

I have just recently started to experience this same problem. All files stored on my laptop it self load without rescan. This past week I DJ'd Thursday night without issue, although Friday night I opened SSL and it started to scan my external drive...500 GBs. Needless to say it took a little over an hour to so. Thank god for the SSL power supply I was able to play a mix or I would've been in a world of hurt. After the night I deleted the SSL program and reloaded 1.8. I once again let all tags rescan and tried to rebuild all overviews. This once took days it took 30 minutes. After which I closed the program only to reopen it a few moments later to find that it was rescaning tags again. I also noticed that the length of songs and green highlights that indicate I have played that somg before no longer showed up...que points to were gone. Tonight after spending most of the day renaming files and reloading same result. I hope that someone can figure this out. Thanks Jestyr - Dave

Oh I forgot to add that when I closed serato this last time tonight after my gig a message appeared saying that the changes made to tracklisting to external drive were unable to be saved. WHAT TO DO NEXT...Thanks to those how try and help.
Nicky Blunt 1:08 PM - 22 June, 2008
I also wanted to add on as a side note that i keep getting a force to close error message come up that says the operaation was complete. With an ok box. i click that then get the windows error message & a forced shut down of ssl.

Is this why my tags keep getting re-scanned?

Ronan 12:04 AM - 23 June, 2008
We've heard that mentioned a couple of times... it's a vista specific problem as far as I'm aware..

Just to clarify: Does it rescan tags if you start up SSL without the harddrive plugged in? does it start scanning tags when you plug the HDD in?
dj jestyr 3:41 AM - 23 June, 2008
I operate with XP, and no SSL isn't reading tags from my computers hard drive those files and crates appear right away. When I turn on my external drive it loads my crates then starts to read tags.
Nicky Blunt 8:42 AM - 23 June, 2008
Nope definatley not vista specific as I dont have vista im running off XP!

NIcky can you confirm that it only starts reading tags once you plug in the external... i.e. not from just the internal drive.

Thanks

We've got a lead for this... will get back to you with some details asap.
Nicky Blunt 9:18 AM - 24 June, 2008
my latop has no songs on there so it will not be scanning any tags from there as there are no tags to scan.

So yes i am confirming that it is scanning the tags from my external.

Also fairly concerned about the whole operation was complete scenario. Especially since you had said it wa vista specific.

Hoping we can get this fixed as i have a big gig on friday. Thanks again for all your help you guys are the bomb!
Ben Santo 11:52 AM - 25 June, 2008
Hi Guys,
I'm just back from last weeks gig tour, therefore sorry for the rsponse delay...

My issue has been resolved this far!

Thinkin' about why the files on my external HDD got rescanned at every startup, while the songs on my internal drive were right there & with tags fully listed made me come across the following:

My external USB HDD was nearly full! DatabaseV2 folders didn't contain any data!
So I freed 1.5 GB of space and everything was fine!
Tags got stored and all systems running perfectly again!

Apparently SSL was just missing enough memory to store the database files properly!! No more suspected bugs in SSL!

Now, if this is the problem for more people than just me, I would suggest Rane should start thinking about a short message as pop up, warning users at shut down of SSL that the database might not be saved because of a lack of space. What's your opinion about this, guys?

My bad for not explaining that!
Ben Santo 4:11 PM - 1 July, 2008
Hi mates,

it's me again here...

Curiously, after 2 weeks of perfect normal function, about HALF of my tags are rescanned again at every start up of SSL although I got over 4 GB of free space on the external drive! Strange, because nothing should've changed from the last full functioning time and the previous issue usually had all of the files rechecked...

Now I'm observing this:
On my external HDD I can find these SSL-folers:
".ScratchLIVE"
".ScratchLIVEBackup"
"_ScratchLIVE_"
"_ScratchLIVE_Backup"

I suppose the first two folders are from Version 1.8.?!

When SSL is scanning the tags, I can see data accumulating only in the "database V2" file of the folder named "_ScratchLIVE_". In this case, after scanning about 230 GB, the database V2 file holds about 22 MB of data content.
Shutting down SSL reduces the size of this database V2 back to 13 MB (about half of the scanned tags seem to be lost again)! Really don't know why this happens...

My first strategy:
I cloned the full scanned database V2 and replaced the half way reduced one before a new SSL startup. Still the before scanned tags are re-read and the database V2 file continues to grow! Apparently the tags information stored from the scan before can not be read properly ...

What to do now?

Weird...

Zach yeah thats pretty much it!

However to get a lil more specific it tends to be when I either drag & drop a large amount of tunes into a SUB-Crate not a normal one & if u se the tab key whil editing stuff!

Its just a box in the windows style that comes up saying the operation was complete.

Then a windows error message comes up asking if i wanna send in the error report!

Any ideas?

okay guys so i finally changed to 1.8.2 as i upgraded my harddrive to a 1tb!!!!! & now rather than taking 3 or so just take the one big monster!

However it seems that its taking a very very very long time to load!

I have 90,0000 + songs on there at the moment as there was lots of crossover in the 3 harddrives i combined.

My prog is now taking over an hour to load!!!!!

This is unacceptable at a gig as it means i have to be there steeing up before the dj before me is even coming on!

Help me please so that this is done by friday night!

THanks guys!

PS I still love you!!! (no bromance)

Nicky i have a Western Digital Drive 2TB with 400gb left on it. It only takes me like less than a minute in a half to load and that's with reading Itunes. Do you have read Itunes checked on your start up? If so, try unchecking that. Also, when you loaded the 3 hard drives on the TB did you copy all the hidden folders as well? I'm thinking maybe the software is confused to where the files are located since you probably had crates for each drive. Respond back and let me know me. I'll also check my setup again to see what i have checked. A hour to load!!! That's extremly long as hell.

To recap, you remaned or deleted all your ScratchLIVE folder and databaseV2 files? In addtion, you deleted the iTunes library.xml file?

If you're not using crates, hunt down and move all your ScratchLIVE folder (even the hidden .ScratchLIVE folder) to the trash with SSL closed and then restart SSL.

If your internal drive is partitioned, there will be a hidden .ScratchLIVE folder there, as well.

Open your iTunes folder found in your My Music folder and list all the files that are in it.

Ronan 12:18 AM - 2 September, 2008
I think maybe the best thing to do would be to start from scratch, adding components one at a time and see when the load time spikes...

You're using smart playlists... do you have normal fixed crates (itunes or ssl) as well?

I would turn off read itunes library, exit SSL and rename/move all your .scratchlive and _scratchlive folders.

Once you've done this when you open Scratch LIVE you should have no songs in your library and a very fast load time.

It's up to you which order you want to add your songs back in... maybe you want to turn on read iTunes library straight away and see how it goes from there... It may take you a few tries to get everything imported while retaining reasonable load times. It might not be possible at all, in the case that there is a bug somewhere affecting your setup.

We'd be very interested to know if it is read iTunes library that is messing up your load times. perhaps it is a particular database file...

Anyway let us know how you get on, and if you want help with any particular step please ask.

Thanks

huh
i dont get what u mean
DJ LTIZZZLE 1:08 PM - 22 September, 2008
open up Itunes. then go to explore and create a folder ie

Itunes playlist Hip hop Then track those tracks over to a folder in Explore named Hip Hop. Do that for all your playlist and when you open Serato hit import and build your crates that way.
Nicky Blunt 1:12 PM - 22 September, 2008
sorry dude

ive had a really heavy weekend

can you do me an idiots guide

my brain aint workin @ the mo

I feelike cantgetright from eddie & martins life!!!
DJ LTIZZZLE 1:19 PM - 22 September, 2008
LOL ok here we go.. I'm just using any names. whatever your playlist are..

Itunes playlist(don't use those names.. Just examples)

Hip hop
New shit
Old shit
whatever

Open up Windows explore and in the music folder create the same new folders that are identical to your playlist

Window's explore folders
Hip Hop
New Shit
Old shit
Whatever.

Then select all in whatever playlist and drag and drop into the folder that's name the same as your playlist. Hope that helps..
Nicky Blunt 1:20 PM - 22 September, 2008

Sorry Nicky.. we don't work on the weekends:)

LTizzle's suggestion is exactly what I would have suggested.
Having SSL read the iTunes library is NOT the way to go.

Organizing music the way LTizzle describes IS the way to go.

Once your playlists are organized in folders, open SSL, uncheck 'read iTunes library' and 'import aac files', click 'Import', and drag/drop your folders into crates in SSL.

You will be a happy camper.

Also know that once you have your music organized in this manor... whenever you get new music, add them to your folders on your HD, and then re-import the whole folders into SSL.
This will only add the newly added files and will not create duplicates.

Hope that helps:)
Nicky Blunt 6:57 PM - 22 September, 2008
zach you are the man

imma try to go thru that step by step tomorrow

but will that then give me the ability to use itunes smartcrates?

as thats why im so upset :(

i miss my smartcrates!!!!
Nicky Blunt 6:59 PM - 22 September, 2008

Hi Nicky,

Just to catch up on this thread and make sure I haven't missed anything, is the delay you are currently experiencing with iTunes, still seem to be caused by tag reading on start-up or does it look like something else?
DJ LTIZZZLE 5:48 AM - 23 September, 2008
Get a macbood Nicky. I had smiliar problems with my alienware. For some reason Itunes is a little unstable on the PC. With the Mac i have zero issues.
Nicky Blunt 11:02 AM - 23 September, 2008
@ Nick!!!

Hahaha no the episaga of the tags has now been resolved!

My major issue naow is that when i select read Itunes it takes hours to load i mean literally hours! 4 - 5 mostly! Obv thats not summin as a club dj i can deal with!

I wanna use itunes still so i can get smartcrates sorted but not at the expense of a 5 hour load time!

I never had this problem before! I really dont know whut to do?

Zach S, I really hope you're joking with the iTunes comment. iTunes is very essential when it comes to organizing. Otherwise, it wouldn't be a read iTunes Library in the software. I haven't had a loading issue with iTunes except back in an update and it wasn't 45 minutes. At any rate, glad you're helping Nicky.

As you were.
DJ MIC FEVA 3:52 PM - 23 September, 2008
My SL is still reading tags as well. But I found out what's happening. Hopefully SL staff can fix this. I am using a Western Digital 250gb external harddrive. I dont keep any music on my computer nor do I use I-Tunes. I am running Serato 1.8.1 on a VISTA laptop. What I found was that my 2 of my Scratch LIVE' or _ScratchLIVE_ folders were SAVING themselves in my MUSIC folder on my LAPTOP. I was only able to find ONE ScratchLIVE backup folder on my actual EXTERNAL hardrive. So every time I would plug in my external hardrive, Serato would begin to Read all my tags over again! The only way I was able to stop it was by moving those ScratchLIVE folders from my MUSIC folder on my laptop over to my external hardrive. BUT HERE IS THE ISSUE...Every time I add new files to my EXTERNAL hardrive, Serato begins to Reads the Tags all over again and The_ScratchLIVE_ folders reappear on my internal hardrive in my MUSIC folder on my laptop and NOT my external drive....PLEASE HELP!

Nicky..

We're actually trying to ween people off of using iTunes with SSL.
The reason for this is because iTunes is a completely different program that we don't have any control over.
Often times iTunes will come out with an update that messes with SSL.
iTunes is really the bane of our existence here in tech support.
We deal with more iTunes issues than we do SSL issues and its for that reason that we would rather not see people using it.

Smart playlists are the only thing SSL does not have but I personally don't think they are worth the headache you will more than likely get when trying to get these two programs working well together.

Organizing your music in your own folders is a much better way to go when using SSL.

DJ Mic,

Please post your issue in a separate thread.
This thread was created by Nicky Blunt and helping others with their own problems sends this thread off topic.

Thanks:)
Nicky Blunt 4:03 PM - 23 September, 2008
zach is that summin that maybee you are going to implement into ssl1?

i guess its just that this is the way i have been operating with ssl1 since i bought it!!!

& naow having to change is highly annoying, due to the fact that im having to remake all my crates!

But okay i understand what u guys are saying.

However if this is just a pc thing tell me id rather spend the cash to get smartcrates back!
Rane, Support
Zach S 4:12 PM - 23 September, 2008
You don't have to remake all of your crates.

Just move your existing playlists into crates/folders.

The best way to do this is to open iTunes with SSL completely shut down.

Create folders on your HD and name them the same as your playlists.

Now drag/drop the files from your playlits into the folders you've created.
This will move the files from the 'iTunes Music' folder to your own folders on your drive.

From there, open SSL, uncheck 'read iTunes library', click the 'import' tab, located your folders and drag/drop them into crates.

Very quick and easy.

You will still have all of your music organized how you want only now your not relying on iTunes.

Much better... AAAAhhhhhh:)

This is definitely NOT a PC thing.
All these same issues happen on Macs as well.
Nicky Blunt 4:15 PM - 23 September, 2008
ooooooh cooool!

zach you are a fcuking don!

I love you mang!

No bromance!!!!!!
sixxx 6:58 PM - 23 September, 2008
Until SSL implements live updating, I'm sticking to iTunes. It seems to me you created a monster on your own since you should've implement something like iTunes in SSL instead of relying on it and giving you headaches with every new iTunes release.

I know it's easy to make crates out of iTunes playlists, BUT with smart playlists your songs appear in more than one folder... something that SSL can't do alone. Surel, you're creating crates of your playlists but what about the same songs that reside on different playlists?

You'd be losing a very important way of organizing, more so than live updating.

My 6 cents and I have more change to spare. Sounds like anew topic for discussion. Perhaps I should do that. :)

Yeah. Now you gotta create duplicates for each crate??????

I made a new thread in the DJ section.

I had a fellow DJ that was experiencing this same load time issue. I simply turned off the option to "import AAC files" and that solved the problem. That might be the reason you were having load time issues.
