Video Hiccups

neXus 4:52 PM - 16 December, 2007
Searching the forum, but didn't see anyone with the same problem. MBP 2.33 C2D, 2 GB Ram - Ripping using Handbrake with 2000kbps MP4 H.264. Everytime I try to play one of these files, it freezes for a second or two every once in a while, audio still plays.

Not sure if it's the way I'm ripping and encoding. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated....

I have the same problem, it freezes ever few second in the video. I'm running a macbook pro 2gb of ram. video files are mpeg4, watching the video's on quicktime is fine no chops. I'm wondering if this is because it's a demo version?
jdub 2:52 AM - 17 December, 2007
did u guys build overviews first?
neXus 4:24 AM - 17 December, 2007
I did. I'm wondering if it has something to do Perian & Leopard being installed. I wouldn't think it does but it is a Plug in for Quicktime with Codecs and since Serato requires Quicktime it might be messing with it.
djtubbs 9:15 AM - 17 December, 2007
I didn't update my quicktime to 7.3.1. Will see if this works.
djtubbs 7:05 PM - 17 December, 2007
Same problem. didn't fix that.
neXus 8:15 PM - 17 December, 2007
Tried the update, and uninstalling Perian but no difference. I'll keep messing with it and update ya.

make sure that you have all unnecessary services turned off. Also check your cpu usage and see if it spikes and the same time the video pauses.
djdannyc 8:38 PM - 17 December, 2007
same here...
djtubbs 1:56 AM - 18 December, 2007
yeah, I got all unnecessary services off. and checked the spec on my cpu's. it seems to be at 86%. I wonder if it's because mines is 2.16ghz duo core.
djtubbs 12:07 AM - 19 December, 2007
So has anyone figured out the pausing problems yet? my cpu spikes at 86% when I use the video.
BriChi 3:20 AM - 19 December, 2007
same here, same files
Dainja 2:21 PM - 19 December, 2007
I have only downloaded music vids from my12inch so far and 50% of the works perfect on my Macbook (2 GBG Ram). However 50% has major hiccups. Some of the has real lag spikes for a couple of seconds, the audio are perfect but Im talking about video frame hiccups.

Can someone tell me why?
BriChi 2:23 PM - 19 December, 2007
I wish I new too, I have ripped a couple of Promo Only videos and the same thing is happening, some videos play fine but others the audio plays fine and the video freezes and lags
nik39 2:30 PM - 19 December, 2007
BriChi, did you encode them all with the same settings (like keyframe value)?
BriChi 2:34 PM - 19 December, 2007
Yes, I left all the settings the same and just ripped one chapeter at a time based on the video I wanted. I have more testing to do tonight, I just did a quick run at it.
BriChi 2:35 PM - 19 December, 2007
If i remember correctly, It was mp4, h.264 at 1500 if that all makes sense. I am at work now so I cant check the exact config
DJBIGWIZ 8:27 PM - 19 December, 2007
sounds like a keyframe problem... if you have to few keyframes, it can freeze up here and there... especially if you are jumping around in the track or back spinning a lot. you should have about 1 keyframe per second... I've tried 24 - 30 and they work well. I am also using MP4 and H.264.
neXus 5:39 PM - 20 December, 2007
My CPU only tops out at about 54% with video. I'm gonna try to run it in 10.4.11 and see if that makes any difference. Are you running 10.5 or 10.4?
Dainja 7:06 PM - 20 December, 2007
10.4.11

The thing is that I get the same result even if I play the video without doing any skipping, spinning, cutting or anyhting. I still get major lag. It always happen with the same videos even though they are encoded exactly like the ones that works without any lag.
neXus 8:44 PM - 20 December, 2007
If you get any without lag, you're in better shape than me. I've only ripped about 5 to test with, but they all skip, some more than others.

I'm running 10.5.1, but just tested it with 10.4.11 with the same results.

I also tested the same exact video files with MegaSeg and there were no skips at all, so I definitely think it's something with Serato.

Same problem here....Im trying to clean up some Internal hard drive maybe that will help with the virtual memory
Deejay Z 8:02 PM - 26 December, 2007
BUMP

Cleaned up my Internal HD, left room for loads of Virtual Memory on top of 2gb of RAM.....Still the same issue?? Anyone find a fix? Ive been using handbrake with the same settings Serato provided...they play fine in Quicktime...
Deejay Z 8:05 PM - 26 December, 2007
Just loaded a couple videos to my desktop to see if it was maybe the external HD and still no luck, same issue
trpcrew 7:53 AM - 27 December, 2007
Hip ups that i had, had to do with the converting itself. Ive been doing th evideos for over a year with the DVJS and have experimented with many different convertions...you just got to make sure your setting are always the same. I use FFMPEG to convert from DV to mp4. I set the audio to 192+ and video 4:3. I import all my files into Final Cut Pro and do all my editing, Extented remixes Ect. then save as a DV file and then convert to mp4. On my Mac the videos run perfect. im using a Mac Pro that is one year old now with 1gb

I still have the same issue, It drives me crazy. I still only use my12inch.com video-files and they all have the same compression. Some work great others have major hicups in video (not audio). How can this be possible?

Im on a Macbook , 2GB ram.

Serato crew? Anyone?

Hi,
We've just put up another article which shows how you can get some information about movie files (www.scratchlive.net). It would be really interesting to see what the differences are between one that plays fine and one that doesn't.

Cheers,

N

I just read about that FFMPEG app., I'm gonna try that as well.

It does seem strange that the Serato Mods haven't responded or asked any questions. Maybe it's something that will be cleared up with the final release.
neXus 2:33 PM - 3 January, 2008
I spoke to soon, there they are.

Nathan H 9:54 PM - 3 January, 2008
Yeah, sorry. Finishing off the little app and getting permission to release it to the public fell down the priority list for a while but now we can start trying to figure out what is different between the files...
