Hello,
I use the CDJ 2000 for controlling serato in internal mode.
So I play a song with the CDJ 2000 through serato and then i go to USB mode, cause i play a song from a usb stick, i reassign the player to link mode usb. Works fine. Serato keeps going and from the same player, i play the mp3 from the usb.
But when I go back to link mode and connect it again to the serato deck, serato crashes.
After restarting serato, i works again very well, but i sometimes sound dropouts.
No idea, why this is happening.
I have the Event log, Its little bit long, so I include it after.
I discovered the problem also with version 2.3.1.

Datomi,

You just made me laugh so hard Bro....
Your help request is so dumb...
Why don't you dump the files from the USB stick on a temporary folder on your desktop and pick em up with SSL from there????

LMFAO.
Datoml85 9:21 AM - 2 January, 2012
Excuse me?
When you dont have something helpful to say, then don't post such stupid sh** here.

The reason is, that the guest dj uses a usb stick for his music.
You think he let me copy his songs to my computer?
That clearly shows, that you have no idea what you talking about.
DJ Mafia 619 9:56 AM - 2 January, 2012
Like I Said,
Then put the USB Stick on the laptop....
Or put a CD on the other Deck....
Or Buy a switcher to swap laptops....
Or use SL4 to have 2 laptops and avoid the risk of music stealing....

By the way, who's the guest DJ that doesn't want to let u copy his music? TIESTO????
Datoml85 10:05 AM - 2 January, 2012
Frontliner, Headhunterz...

But the main thing is, that it crashes ssl and it shouldn't.

You should be able to switch from LINK mode, to USB mode, and back to LINK mode without getting a crash.
Definitely a problem.

Are you able to get this to occur every time?
Did this problem just start happening after updating to 2.3.3?

Does this still occur if you plug the cdj directly into a usb port on the computer?
(Run your Sl3 into the other port).

I just tried this using our one cdj 2000, SL3, and a MBP running 10.7.2.
Both plugged directly into a usb port on the computer and didn't have any issues.
Datoml85 10:44 PM - 3 January, 2012
Hello!
Thx for your answer.
I tried it with 2.3.3 and 2.3.1.
Allways the same problem but I never tried it with direct connection to the macbook.
The problem is, that i need both.

Have you tried it with following configuration.

Plug in the sl3 box to the "good" port of the macbook.
Then plug in a usb hub to the other usb port with 2 CDJ2000 attached.
Link the left to 1 and right to 2.
No plug in a usb stick with mp3s on it.
Play a song from the usb stick and link the other player to the usb stick.
After player 2-3 tracks with usb, link a player back to SL.

Then my sl crashes.
Today I installed Snow Leopard back on my mac and I will try it again..

I don't have two cdj 2000s here but I do have a 2000 and a 900.
I am not familiar with linking the two cd players together to play off of one USB stick though.
Do you know if there is anything I would need to do other than connecting the two players via a network cable?
Datoml85 8:42 AM - 4 January, 2012
Sorry, but I have no other idea, what you could do.
I will try tomorrow if I can reproduce that error with on player.

I will post my progress tomorrow.
Datoml85 6:15 PM - 5 January, 2012
Hello,

so, I tested it today on snow leopard and the same problem occurs..

If I use an USB Hub, serato crashes, without not.
The problem without no USB hub is, that I am not able to connect the second player to serato.
I also tried to connect the box to the usb hub and one player direct to my macbook and the other with usb hub.

The recreate the error do the following steps.
Connect both player to serato.
Play 2 songs, after that insert an usb stick and play a song from it.
Then connect the second player over link mode to the usb stick an play a song.
Play another song from p1 one with usb stick.
No try to reconnect in link mode the player 2 to serato again.

Following will happen:
* Serato crashes
* Player cannot connect to sl anymore. When you now connect player 1 to serato, player 2 is connected again. But if you do the same steps with usb stick again, serato will crash.

Hope you can recreate it.
If not, i could make a video for you.

The 2 CDJ2000 are linked together over a network switch.

Zach S 7:29 PM - 5 January, 2012
I followed the steps above but didn't experience any crash.
Granted I'm using 10.7.2 and using one CDJ 900 and one 2000 but that is as close to what your using as I can get atm.

Have you tried using a different USB hub?
Also, if you haven't already, try updating to 10.7.2.
Datoml85 8:27 PM - 6 January, 2012
Hello,

I had lion with latest version on my mac. I also tried a different usb hub.
Now on snow leopard occurs the same problem.

With this steps you should be able to reproduce this error.
First of all, connect your cdj 900 with the cdj 2000 with an ethernet cable together.
After that, connect the two with usb to your usb hub and connect it to the bad board of the mac.
The serato box is on the good one.

No start up serato, play a song on the right and left side.
Insert a usb stick an play a song from it. Link the second player to the usb stick of the fist and play a song.
Choose another song with player one from the usb stick.
No try to reassign the second player to serato with link mode.

Following will happen for me:
* Player 2 cannot connect to serato anymore. After reassign the first player to serato, the second will be reconnected too. But if you then play a song from usb again, serato will crash if you want to reassign again.
* Or serato will crash

Hope it helps.
If you want, i can record a video for you.

That is exactly what I did and am not able to reproduce it.
Also know that there is no "bad" port on a Mac anymore.
Various OSX updates have fixed that issue.
If you haven't already, try swapping the hub and Rane device in their USB ports.
Datoml85 9:41 PM - 6 January, 2012
Ok,
I'll try it.
Also tried it on another macbook so that i have the proof that my usb port isn't corrupt.
But same problem.

Hello,
I tried it today with the other usb port.
Same problem occurs :(.

But I found maybe the source of the error.
I discovered following.
When the CDJ are in Link mode with Usb and you only switch one player back to serato link mode, serato freezes.
Now when you reassign the other player to serato too, serato continues working.

I upload a video for you later that day.

Martin C 2:19 AM - 9 January, 2012
Hey Datoml85,

I have just attempted recreating this with the following setup:

Macbook Pro with OS X 10.7.2
Scratch Live 2.3.3
1 X CDJ 2000 and 1 X CDJ 900 linked
1 USB drive
Rane SL 3
Cant seem to recreate the problem though.

Im not certain if you guys have already covered this or not, but when you play off the USB drive via USB link mode, are you running the CDJ audio outs through the SL 3 and selecting "THRU"? Or are you running the CDJ outs into different audio channels on your mixer, then switching between them as you play.

Another thing I am curious about; do you have the DJ-FX enabled in Scratch Live? IF so, if you DISABLE the DJ-FX and do the same thing, do you still get this issue?
datoml 6:52 AM - 9 January, 2012
Hello,
when I use an usb drive I use different channels on the mixer trought the outs of the cdj.

Yes, I have the DJ - FX enabled. I will try to disable this feature and try again.
I'll report back later, when I am back at home.

Martin C 11:14 PM - 9 January, 2012
Hmmmm ok cheers for that. Im still testing, managed to get a hold of 2 x CDJ 2000s this time as well.

For me when I switch from playing a track on USB to using HID it simply shuts off the track playing on the USB. Although this is not the case when reverse, it does allow the track to play when moving from HID to USB.

However this is no the case for you? You are able to switch from USB to HID and keep both tracks playing?

Are you using "rekordbox?"
datoml 6:45 AM - 10 January, 2012
Hello.
When you switch from USB to HID its normal, that the player stops playing from USB.
But this is not the main problem.

The problem is, that when I play from USB and want to go back to HID with only 1 Player, Serato freezes like you'll see in the latest video.

At 03:26 you can see following steps.
Player2 plays a song from Player1 via USB linked. Now I wanted to go back to HID, but it stucks in the list view. So I went back again to USB Link and tried another time to connect again to HID but this time the Player2 isn't able to connect to serato anymore.
When I now try to choose a track directly in serato, it freezes.
Serato, Support
Martin C 8:09 AM - 10 January, 2012
Ok thanks I will continue testing to try and recreate this issue.

So are you using Pioneer "Rekord box" to organise the files on your USB or no?
datoml 8:32 AM - 10 January, 2012
No.
Its a normal usb stick with mp3 on it copied with windows.
datoml 8:56 AM - 10 January, 2012
Maybe if you want, we can skype about this problem. If you have time.
Serato, Support
Martin C 5:13 AM - 11 January, 2012
Without being able to reproduce it Im not sure how much help I would be on Skype at this stage, but we may have to at some point.

Just to go back to something you said earlier, you tried it with nothing else but 1 X CDJ 2000 and the SL 3, and you were unable to reproduce the issue? Can you confirm this?

I understand this isn't your ideal situation for DJing but for testing purposes it would be great help for us to explore this situation.

Have you tried swapping over your Network cable for a different one? Changing both USB cables on the CDJS and SL 3?

Can you try using an earlier version of Scratch Live and see if it still happens? Maybe Scratch Live 2.2.0? serato.com

What is quite odd is that each time you choose to connect to Scratch Live, you are asked to establish the HID connection each time, when this is not necessary, and does not happen for me.

It is almost like the HID connection is interrupted.
datoml 8:30 AM - 11 January, 2012
Hello,

WIth 1x CDJ2000 I had no problem. I can confirm this. I think the reason is, that the CDJ dont have to wait for the other one.

I also have tried to switch the network cable and the usb cables. I also changed the usb hub.
Same error occurs.

With Serato Version 2.2.0 I am able to reproduce the same problem.

Hmm, this with the connection to establish is a little bit strange.
When you link the second player to an usb stick of player one, should the player not close the connection?
Or I am wrong?
Cause when I link to an other device (USB Stick Player 1) I guess its like a new connection.
Or is there a option on the cdj where i can close the connection?
Can you maybe make a video how you do this?

greetings
Serato, Support
Martin C 9:33 AM - 11 January, 2012
Ok cheers, and sorry I wasn't super clear when I asked; network cable = cable link between the two CDJs, you have tried changing this, yes?

When I link CDJ deck 2, to play from the USB in the port of CDJ deck 1, it does not "close" the HID connection, I simply lose control of the HID function (Scratch Live deck).

On the same deck, after playing a USB track and I go to select HID mode, it does NOT ask me to re-establish the connection like it does in your video. It simply jumps straight into my Scratch Live crate and does not ask to "push button to connect".

For me, it only asks me to do this once, when I first start testing, but once the HID connection is established it does not ask again at any stage throughout the testing.

So far it is the ONLY difference I can see in your video when compared to what I am doing, and although it is a small detail, it may be a clue to as why you are having this problem.

I will try and upload a quick video of this detail, you may notice something I am doing that is different. The only theory I can come up with now, is that for some reason your USB link connection interrupts the HID connection (which is basically like pulling out the USB plug of the CDJ) which then causes Scratch Live to hang.
datoml 9:56 AM - 11 January, 2012
Thats true.
Maybe this is the problem cause as you mentioned I have to reconnect all the time.
And that is maybe the problem I descripted. Cause it looks like it tries to reconnect but sl is still connected.
LJ_WOOLSEY 2:00 PM - 11 January, 2012

So are you 100% certain your firmware is up to date? The most current version for the CDJ 2000 is version 4.0.5.

To check this:

1. Turn on the power of the CDJ-2000.
2. Press [MENU/UTILITY] for over 1 second. Next the [UTILITY] screen is displayed. 3. Scroll the screen menu with the rotary selector, firmware VERSION No. will be
displayed.
4. Press [MENU/UTILITY] to return to the menu screen.

Also, I don't know if a USB 3.0 will work so well, I would recommend sticking with USB 2.0.
datoml 6:23 AM - 12 January, 2012
Hello,
I am in 140% sure, that I have this version. When I start the player it shows 4.0.5 and in the utility menu also.

Have you managed to make a video?

Ok, I tried today again with 2.2.2 same problem.
But I maybe found the reason why this happing.

First of all, I import my tunes from itunes, so i use the "read itunes library" function.
Maybe is this a reason... dont know.

But try following:
* Play song with serato on both decks.
* Insert USB Stick an load the song to player one for instance
* Now go through your playlists on your computer

Serato will hold until you link back player 1 to serato.

Just get adifferent usb hub already!!!!!!!!!!!! I know ppl that have tried 10 diff usb hubs till they found one that worked the most solid. Ask around family and friends and try there usb hubs. But from what i see most ppl have luck with belkin powered usb 2.0 hubs.
Datoml85 4:47 PM - 13 January, 2012
Hello,
yes I know what you mean.
But from my view I think serato cannot handle it because it want to send the library position to the player's display and cannot reach one of them. So it stucks.

But maybe you are right.
LJ_WOOLSEY 4:50 PM - 13 January, 2012
You may be correct but i would defo try some hubs first.

Ok, my impressions from yesterday.
Tried a new usb hub and had no freezing issues, however I doesn't used an usb stick yesterday.
But what I noticed was, that later that night, I had sometimes some kind of "dropouts".
It sounds more like the pitch up down.
Can this also be a problem with the hub?
Datoml85 1:23 PM - 15 January, 2012

Hey man, I am still unable to get this to happen to me.

You mention iTunes, but have you tried following your steps without iTunes enabled? I don't know if much difference will be made but its worth trying anything at this stage.

Still working on a video, but now I notice that the CDJ does ask me to establish a connection each time now! Really throws my theory out of whack...

Let me know how that goes. I have started following your other discussion, with hope that we can discover what causes this.

At this point Im glad you have brought it to our attention but I can't really present it as a problem to developers until I can recreate it myself, if you know what I mean.

Its really hard to fix a problem that you can't experience first hand... Appreciate your time though :)

So,
for now I mixed since 2 hours like a boss with usb stick and serato (version 2.1.1) without itunes integration in ping pong mode ;) (USB and SERATO).
No freeze or connection problem occurs.

I imported my whole itunes library (over 10000 songs) in one create.

Maybe the itunes integration is really the problem?

I also experienced that serato don't crash after closing the program. The time when serato tries to backup the database.

Cheers for that.

So you only use Smart Crates, no other kinds of crates?

For testing purposes, are you able to copy all the files that you have in each smart crates, into a normal crate. So make 20 normal crates which are essentially clones of your smart crates, and see if you still have this issue?

It maybe something to do with the smart crates, but that is just a theory.
datoml 6:20 AM - 26 January, 2012
Ok,
I will try it.
Am I right, that you mean, that I only should have normal crates in my library then?
So, I have to backup my current library and remove the smart crates?.
Serato, Support
Martin C 8:38 AM - 26 January, 2012
Correct, create a back up copy of your _Serato_ folder, then create 20 normal crates.

Move all the files within each smart crate into one of the normal crates, then delete all the smart crates, so you now have essentially the same library organization, but using normal crates instead of smart crates.

Then let me know what happens, thanks man :)
Datoml85 7:55 AM - 31 January, 2012
Hey :).
I tried last weekend with normal crates and I also switch back to the stock 4 gig of ram.

This kind of sound-dropouts sometimes still exist.
Switch to usb stick and back I had no time. But I hope I can try it today.
Serato, Support
Martin C 9:11 PM - 31 January, 2012
Sound drop outs? I am unsure if you have mentioned this before, I was under the impression you were only having issues with switching between HID and USB.

Is the MIDI light flashing red/orange in the top right hand side of your screen when you have these sound drop outs?

Drop outs aside, I am still interested to know if the USB to HID freeze still happens when using normal crates and no smart crates.
Datoml85 12:01 PM - 1 February, 2012
Sorry for the wrong explaining.
I ment that its not really a dropout. It sounds more like the pitch is going for a short time up and down. Only sometimes.
Midi light isn't flashing.

But if I have time, I hope I can test it today, if the freeze still happens.

Oh ok this is something that has only just started happening right?

Does it happen when using control CDs as well?

Let me know how you get on with the freeze testing, thanks!
Datoml85 9:56 AM - 2 February, 2012
No, never happens with timecode.
Starting with using HID mode.
Serato, Support
Martin C 9:34 PM - 2 February, 2012
Does it happen with one CDJ in HID mode, without using a hub?

It sounds like there is simply not enough information being transferred between two CDJs via a hub into one of your USB ports.

This is most likely the cause of all your issues.

Did you ever get a chance to try out any different powered USB hubs?
Datoml85 6:16 AM - 3 February, 2012
I tried with 3 hubs.
But I think I should give the belkin usb hub a try.
Serato, Support
Martin C 7:26 AM - 3 February, 2012
Hmmm yeah that would be cool if you could man, definitely keep the receipt though, cause if it doesn't solve this then there is no point in having it.

I have tried 3 different hubs here at the office, and haven't managed to have it happen yet, so I cant really be sure that it will be a hub issue, but the general symptoms kinda point to USB cables/hubs/ports generally unable to transfer sufficient information.
Datoml85 7:58 AM - 3 February, 2012
Really funny.
What computer do you use for testing?
Mac or PC?
Datoml85 4:17 PM - 4 February, 2012
So, my review from yesterday.
First of all I put the player to a better bass vibration protected position.
The result was, that no kind of dropout thing happened the whole night.
So it looks like, that maybe the bass vibration was the source for this issue.

I also managed now my playlists in crates (not smart crates) and put back my 8gig of ram into my macbook.
Also used version 2.3.3.
So I tried at home with usb stick, but serato still freezes after scrolling fast through the library after going back with one player from usb.

Hey Datoml85.

I use a Mac with 10.7.2
2.3 Ghz Intel Core i5
4GB 1333 MHz DDR3

This is fairly similar specs to yours isn't it? Although I don't know how much it matters, as you said, this can happen when you are using another computer.

There a couple of known problems when using the CDJS in HID mode in a a heavy vibration situation: serato.com

Dj matty k, when following Datoml85s instructions to switch from USB back to HID you can't get this to happen?

Datoml, I am beginning to wonder if one of your CDJs sends a funny message to Scratch Live causing it to crash, and that not all CDJs are sending this message.
We may have already been throughout his, but please remind me, if you switch the position/functions of the CDJs, is there any difference? Meaning, if you had the USB stick in the LH CDJ before, does it make a difference if it is in the RH CDJ instead?

This help request has been closed due to inactivity.
Datoml85 6:21 AM - 21 February, 2012
Sorry for don't write for so a long time.

The problem still occurs. It doesn't matter if it the LH or the RH.
But I know now , how do deal with it. I simply shut down the cdj and start it again before I connect it again to SL.
But maybe, as you mentioned, that the CDJ maybe really send something funny to Sl.
Maybe with the upcoming firmware relase, the problem will disapear.

The problem with the "dropout" is completely gone. It really was the vibration of the sub basses.

Yeah hopefully! Here is the thread by the way, perhaps it could be worth while tracking it. You may pick up on something I might miss. serato.com

Oh ok! I guess you may as well upgrade the firmware at some point, although I had tried to recreate this issue with firmware 4.0.5, the I upgraded to 4.1.0.

I cant imagine this upgrade will help but its always good to be running the latest firmware regardless :)
