How to DJ With iTunes
November 26th, 2010 · 1 Comment · how to dj
I was just reading this article on Djing with iTunes and thought it might come in handy if your are learning to become a DJ and want to make use of your iTunes library. Basically it’s a question about iTunes and Djing to DJ Ron Slomowicz the main man behind the extremely handy How to DJ section of About.com. Enjoy!
Dear DJ Ron,
I am an aspiring DJ at a university bar. I am using two programs on my computer right now for my DJing: iTunes and Ots Turntables Pro. I find working back and forth using one or the other doesn’t work for me. I don’t like using the Party Shuffle only OR Ots Turntables on their own.
Basically what I am asking is if there is a DJ program easily downloadable that can allow me to use my iTunes while having the flexibility to use a turntable program.
- Aspiring iTunes DJ
Dear Aspiring:
Working within iTunes limits you because of the Digital Rights Management (DRM) that is in place. There are two ways to approach this:
1. Convert your files to remove the DRM – i.e. burn CDs and then rerip them as standard mp3s. You can then use any DJ programs – Traktor, Cue, etc to DJ.
2. Searching the web, I found several programs that integrate with iTunes – DJ1800, Megaseg, Virtual DJ, and Torq. These programs claim that they can use AAC files purchased from the iTunes store. As I have not tested these programs, I would recommend that you download the free demo versions to test to see which will work best for you.
If you haven’t already check out the DJ Master Course training package and begin learning how to DJ now!

Yea Midi..but don't call yourself a Dj..call yourself a Jukebox…cuz it takes skill to actually mix..it takes no skill to push play on your iPod..just saying ;)

Well, now don't be so quick to diss on the MIDI guys. I use all 3 MIDI, CDJ, and Vinyl so I don't have a dog in the fight. You may not need as MUCH skill with a MIDI but man have i heard some ungodly sounds from a MIDI DJ that hadn't practiced enough.

playing songs in iTunes is to Djing as putting a band aid on a cut is to calling yourself a Dr.

Um....you all realize that alot of DJ's use itunes for their library with is used in Serato.... So now these people match your previous descriptions?

Um.... YOU do realize in your otiginal post, the guy says he..." I am using two programs on my computer right now for my DJing: iTunes and Ots Turntables Pro. I find working back and forth using one or the other doesn’t work for me. I don’t like using the Party Shuffle only OR Ots Turntables on their own."

Which indicates that he (or she) uses iTunes to "dj" with... NOT itunes playlists inside of Scratch Live That's right... I said Scratch Live not Serato. Um... Serato is a company Scratch Live is a program they make... you do realize that don't you?

So to answer your misguided question. NO, DJ's who access their iTunes playlists inside of Scratch Live do NOT fit my previous description.

Now, do you understand or do I need to take it to a more dumbed down level... like to the level of pressing a button and calling myself a dj dumb down. If playing songs from itunes makes you a dj... than anyone who ever pressed play on a walkman is a dj by your description. Are you sure you want to stick to your previous description? Applying your same logic here... I put air in my cars tires the other day... do you think that makes me a auto mechanic?
DJBIGWIZ 10:14 PM - 31 May, 2011
There is a lot more to being a DJ.. i mean "really" DJing than pressing a play button.
Which is all you are really doing if you "dj" out of iTunes... you do understand that don't you?
If so, then you have no argument with me... if not, I can't waste any more time with this nonsense.

Listen you retard. The point of the whole post was to show starters how to use itunes in other systems. You do realize that don't you or do I need to dumb it down for you. I'll dumb it down for you. Stay in your lane and go fix a computer.

no comment except that burning an mp3 to cd and then re-encoding it into a mp3 is not a good idea. it will create a low-quality copy that will be labeled as higher quality than it really is, and that is a lousy file to have in your library. if you create files like that make sure to label them "transcode - low quality" or something so that you don't accidentally share it with someone and release a lousy file into the world.

Good tip. I don't typically use i-tunes for anything more than the library function but I'll keep that in mind if I come across someone doing that process.

Isn't the answer completely wrong? iTunes hasn't had DRM for years now.

No wonder about.com has a reputation as a content farm.
