How long does it take to start your Serato up?

Just wanted to see everybody's times it takes for their serato to start up as it loads the library and what not. Mine takes about 5 minutes!

Starts less then 10 secs here. 5 minutes seems not normal to me, 45 sec is also a bit slow..

Mine takes about 30-45 seconds from the time I open ScratchLive and it loads all my crates. I have about 550 gig of music on a 1 TB external and a shit load of crates.
Not that Im unhappy about how long it takes...just figured it was due to the amount of music and crates I have.

Ok so your startup time is mostly depending on your library size?
My library is very clean and small, around 2000 songs in it, only 4 crates. That explains my startup time i think.
Curious about djreece1's library, 5 minutes seems not normal for me, unless you have a huuuuge library or a very old computer.

Comp speed, number of crates, library size, video files, external drive/usb/firewire, etc.. there are a number of reasons why it takes some people more time than others.

Mine used to take tha long and I didn't have a lot of songs in my library either. I usually get a slow start up time if I backup my library , or upgrade to a newer version of Scratch Live. Just recently mine was taking a long time to import my iTunes library. After a week of using it the time has gone down to like 1 minute.

There is going tobe a fix in the next version (IF they can fix it) as the 2.x version all take longer than the 1.x if you have alot of crates and a big library. Andy from serato posted this on the forum somewhere.

My buddy's Mac takes near 10 minutes, it's ridiculous. He's not tech savvy on the necessary maintenance so I gotta do it for him eventually, it's unreal how long this thing takes. I got him to go back to 2.1 and there was a slight difference in performance but not much.

to be honest I got a lot of my viz from my days of yahoo launch before they disabled the embed download that people use to download youtube videos. This is pre serato at least for me. Smashvidz has a good selection, itunes has a good selection, 8th wonder, and mymp3pool, and latinomusicpool really beefed up my video library.

on 2.1 was taking like 30 seconds . now on the latest 2.2 i just get a beachball and it freezes when trying to load with my external attached (all music and crates/subcrates on external)
i have to load ssl 1st which takes about 45 seconds then attch the external drive with all my music and crates which takes another 30 seconds or so to mount and ssl to recognize and load it fully....
another thing i do now is turn my laptop on before i leave out for a gig and just put it to sleep so i can just open it up and its ready to go at the gig. i am going to try now opening ssl too and put it to sleep and take to a gig , which is usually never more than a hour away

I'm amazed by the huge library's some of u guys have.. My library contains around 2000 songs. It only happens like 1 out of 3 gigs i get a request i don't have, and most of the times i can satisfy the requester then by playing another song i DO have from the same artist he requested. Do u guys literaly have all songs from some artists? All remixes?
Please don't see this as an attack, just curious! Do u play so many diffrent styles so you need that many songs?
The style i play, is EDM, Hiphop and R&B, with some classics influence in it. I also have another 1000 songs for classics and weddings. Both library's are built in many years, and contain all the greatest and still needed hits from the past, and all new music (only music i WILL play). If a song get's old, i decide if i need to keep it, or throw it away.
For example: 'Shakira - Hips don't lie' will stay in my collection long time.
'Kesha - Tik tok' <- no one wants this song anymore, so i delete it (ofcourse this depends on region, but it's just a quick example)
I hope some of you can explain why to carry such large library's. By the way, here in The Netherlands most dj's i know carry the same size library as me, so maybe things are different in America or other regions.

If you're contsantly playing out 4 nights a week, different style clubs events each time, you're going to be really repetitive without an ample size library.
Hardcore Dancehall night - Commercial Dancehall night, two very different ball games (let's not get into actual Reggae nights)
If I play played at the slow pace of 20 songs per hour, I'm looking at 120 songs per night, just for that one subset of the genre. But since I included 2, we're looking at 240. But let's be honest, you are not playing a Dancehall song for 3 minutes a piece. more like a minute and half, and that's being very generous (and not how you would play if you're playing riddims). So now that doubles to 480 songs. If I kept my library at 2000 songs i could roughly play 4 nights before I've played my entire library, every single last song... how long before that gets old? And that's only commercial Daancehall and Hardcore Dancehall. What about the other genres? Shit before other genres, dubplates alone would eat up half of that 2000, am I not supposed to carry these with me?
I play full on nights of VERY different formats, like polar opposites. I'm not a playlist Dj, I'm not going to play "This Is How We Do It" and and "Be Faithful" every night for the rest of my life, that's lame. Some songs go over well with some crowds, some don't. Sometimes I play for Top 40 princesses, sometimes I play for music snobs. I will never limit myself by stripping down my library to a bare minimum, especially in this day and age where walking with thousands of songs takes up very little relative space.
Say if I played only 90's Hip Hop alone, that's an entire decade of some serious songs, think about how many songs that is.. What am I gonna play T.R.O.Y. into 93 Til Infinity every frigging time I play out when there is so much other good music from that time period? (And we haven't added the other decades yet)
Retro 80's, again, an entire decade that includes more than one genre, say if you weren't even diving deep but going the route of Billboard Top 100 (which will not get you very many real Retro gigs) that's 1000 songs for that decade...
House Music, if I were to choose 100 songs from each year including all the subgenres of only just personal songs, ones that I like, dating back to 88 (around the time I first started buying it) you're looking at 2200 songs right there not including what comes out this year.
Do you see where I'm going with all this? I can't base my library on cliche formula standards and what is or isn't getting requested by sheep, I respect the music much more than that... I respect myself much more than that.

Good explanation. I see the point if you play that many genres, but my crowds just want the popular classics and new music. It's a shame, but here the people have no interest in oldskool hiphop or other interesting styles (except some very rare events). If they don't know a song, they mostly won't like it. Also i didn't mention i mostly play 2 hour sets, with about 50 songs an hour. That beeing 100 song, so i can make enough variety with my library. I think the biggest difference is the public beeing open-minded to other music, or just want the hits, which is my xase.

The "spinning beachball" on a Mac just means that the OS is waiting for data. So if you're loading a large library from a hard drive, seeing it is perfectly normal and nothing to be worried about.
The times to be more worried about the beachball is when it pops up for no apparent reason, and/or stays onscreen for an unreasonably long time.

I have a mbp 13" and for some reason when I load a song to either of the decks it takes some time to load compared to other laptops i see on youtube. Is there something i can do to speed it up. it takes about 3 to 5 seconds at times. I see other djs and songs load up quick. Please help thanks

Do you have autofill overviews turned on?
Do you analyse your files?
Whenever you load a track for the first time, if it doesn't already have a waveform built it will load slowly. Once they're built it should be instant.

Mine takes forever now.. It takes like 5 -10 mins to load all my crates. This recently just started happening since I added about 17,000 files and tons of subcrates to my library. IF you know of a date you want to save, go right ahead, but get rid of it and do it on a regular basis.

If you added that many files it will take longer. But also you may need to defrag your drive(s) after adding so many files. If my drives are 2 or 3 % fragmented things slow down. And I also have 2 laptops with AMD processors. One with XP the other with Win7.

Interesting read.
Been using Traktor for a while but about to jump ship and was curious as to start times (Itch takes an eternity).
I have approx 1.5tb of music which fires from an external fw drive on a 2010 8gb ram dual drive mac.
Anyone envisage any problems for me? Will deffo be buying a sl box next week as long as boot times are ok.
