2010 mac book pro 17 i-7, 57sl, newest ssl slv versions and 2 tb hardrive below half capacity.
When I purchased my macbook I purchased a new hardrive and 57sl to go with it so full install was fresh. When I transfered the music I use to the new hd it seemed to load fast. Now after several months and moving crates around and making subcrates to organize with a total of about 40 crates and subcrates it seems to take at least 5 minutes to load which is no big problem but would enjoy seeing it load much faster like originally. Is there a setting in the macbook that will speed this up? Heres where the real problem lies. When Im doing a set and want to open a subcrate up it will freeze ssl but continue playing video or song when opening. It takes majority of the song to actually open up the crate. Gets scary if I open a crate in a live set. Should I start over with less crates? I do have about four crates that are my favorites I pull out of other crates and play regular. Thanks Chad

Hey ta2423,

So when you open a crate or subcrate it will freeze Scratch Live and take a couple minutes to load, correct? That shouldn't be happening - lets see if we can fix it :

1/. First off can you please close Scratch Live and go to Music > Serato Scratch Live and rename the History folder to OLDHistory.

2/. Now can you please recreate your database file, this guide will show you exactly how : www.serato.com (you will need to do it for your external and internal drive folder)

If you do these two things and still get this problem would you be able to upload your whole _Serato_ folder (in your Music folder) to this thread. I will take a look at it and hopefully see what is causing this.

Cheers :)

I Recreated my database V2 file following directions. I reopened ssl and have the same results. While doing this the files were unanalyzed and I started to analyze them thinking that would help. Ssl lost my music files which would result in relocating them. I switched back to the original v2 database so as not to have to totally start over. I need to add that I have two setups with two different hardrives computers and 57sl's. The other setup unfortunately is a pc. I have the exact problems with that one too. I did however when I purchased the mbp, new hardrive and 57 use the same music files etc from my original pc setup. I also have used both hardrives on each computer. mbp and pc. I have a feeling this is where the problem may lie.

Can you please download and install 2.0 here and let me know if you still get this freeze?

Are all your crates on your two external drives?

When you have no external connected do you still get this freeze?
Or does it only happen when the external is connected? (both or just one?)

Cheers :)

All of my crates/music are on external hard drives. I keep computers clean of all other software, programs, music, video's etc. They do not even get online. Their sole job in life is run ssl and vsl. When ssl is loaded up without the hard drive attached it only shows the single crates - all - music- videos and recorded. There are no subcrates so I can not tell if there is a problem here. Although I can create subcrates with all and recorded to see if this problem happens.

Can you give me a link to the 2.0 you want me to install?
I will state I have had this problem before 2.0 was out. Just never really paid attention to it and worked around the problem. (kept crates open)

I have gigs this weekend so I will install 2.0 sunday and relay info on monday.
Thank you chad

I have had the same issue for quite sometime. If I am playing in crates that have the sub crates opened up it is fine, but if i go to click on a folder that has subcrates that is collapsed, it hangs my interface for up to a 1 min sometimes but music and video keep playing. I did the V2 rebuild yada yada no improvement.
DJ Sound Technique 4:32 PM - 7 November, 2010
oh and there was no difference between 2.0 and 2.1.1 on this issue, 2.1.1 has mad dropout issues

Quick question, within the Library tab of the setup screen, is the album artwork slider set to the largest setting? If so, slide it all the way to the left and uncheck the Display Album artwork option within the Display tab. Did it have any affect?
ta2423 5:35 PM - 9 November, 2010
I dont use the artwork displays but I will check the settings tonight. Im going to buy another harddrive and do a fresh start on it while keeping an eye on crate opening and closing to see when it exactly starts slowing down. If I remember correctly it ran smooth on my last setup and when I started moving songs around to different crates and organizing the same songs in different crates it started this problem.
Example I would have a crate for yourremix only. Then from that crate I would distibute the songs to other crates where I could quickly find them. A rock crate, hiphop, house, disco and a clean crate. I also have a crate where my favorites are in from all of the other crates that I went through and made sure they were quality to play at a gig. I guess you could call it a set but the crate holds approximately 2 to 3 hundred video's. Then when I decided there were to many crates visible I made them subcrates of a marked crate that I could find quickly.
Example, I took all mp4 crates from visuals to accapella to different pool company's and shoved them in an mp4 crate. Leaving out what I use on a regular basis "set" crate. Hope that makes sense, but works for me.

+1 Artwork slider was halfway... Display album art was already unchecked. Took the slider all the way to the left and opening crates went from 3 plus minutes to exactly 30 seconds. On the right track. A huge improvement that I can manage with. Although if you want to work this all the way out I will continue to work on it with you...

Mass rad news! We're definitely on the right track :)

What library view option are you using to display your library? If not using the classic version, switch to the classic (no artwork) view and see if that has any affect.

In addition, within the Library tab of the setup screen, do you have the Include Subcrate Tracks option checked? If so, turn it off and see if the opening time is any better
ta2423 9:36 PM - 9 November, 2010
Yes I use classic view option. Yes I have include songs from crate checked. I unchecked it and it took approximately a minute to open to subcrates. Checked include songs in crate back and time went back down to the 30 seconds.

My second setup is doing the same thing. Exact same setup with hardware and software except it is a pc. I will check it this weekend to see if it reacts the same.
Would you like me to attach the serato folder from this to? Also is it ok to swap external hardrives when working on different systems from mac to pc?

Shaun W 4:56 PM - 10 November, 2010
Yes, please attach the other ScratchLIVE or _Serato_ folder, thanks :)

Swapping external drives between Windows and Mac shouldn't cause issues.

I'm guessing your external drive is formatted MS-DOS (FAT), correct?

If you're using Vista or Windows 7, be sure to disable the Windows UAC option, as UAC can block/lock SSL from accessing its own files.

Here's how -->> serato.com

I will attach the pc driven ssl files tonight before above fixes. Thankyou for the above info. I did not know this about pc. Chad

I thumbed through the crates on these ssl files. It is not showing me the crates from the hardrive that I use. It is only showing crates I made from recordings etc in the computer. Im assuming since the problem exists in opening and closing crates that are built from the external hd that you may need those ssl files. This file is from my pc same problem as I was having on my mbp. I will lower the artwork selector and see if this setup reacts the same.

Hey ta2423,

Is that ScratchLIVE.zip file from your external or internal drive?

Few questions for you :)

- Did lowering and unchecking the 'Display Album Art' option improve the expand time like it did with your Mac?

- Did you notice any difference in load-time when using 2.0 from 2.1.1?

- Roughly, how many crates and subcrates do you think you have?

Can you try this for me (on either your Mac or PC) :
-Connect your external HD
-Open it and go to the _Serato_ (or _ScratchLIVE_) folder
-Locate and rename the file 'collapsed.pref' file to OLDcollapsed.pref'
-Now open Scratch Live

When you open your crates and subcrates load and expand faster now?
ta2423 6:33 AM - 11 November, 2010
Both are from the internals, Im not for certain of the issue from 2.0 to 2.1. I do know the mbp has only had 2.1 installed in it. The pc has gone through several versions. I am using both setups friday and saturday. I will rename the collapsed file on sunday and see if that changes anything. I did notice on the pc w/o the hardrive loaded it was instant on opening subcrates. I will try different scenarios this weekend. The mac external hd has about 10 crates with approximately 20 subcrates and a couple have a subcrate in a subcrate. Example mp4 crate. Subcrate from where I got the video,Then subcrates for genres, visuals, mashups etc. I will have better info for you on sunday.
ta2423 6:51 AM - 11 November, 2010
I take that back... I did notice that when I purchased more videos and placed them in crates and subcrates analyzed etc. is when opening crates started bogging down.
Lowering the display art did in fact help tremendously in time to open a crate. Unchecking the display art added about 20 more seconds to opening crates time. I rechecked it and it lowered back to approximately 30 seconds from the 3 to 5 minute it took from the original state before help request.

Okay that's good to know. 30 seconds isn't too bad a load time but understandably you would want it to be a bit faster.

Let me know if renaming the collapsed.pref file then opening Scratch Live improves the load time.

Also, what type of external hard drives are you using? (sorry if you already mentioned this but I couldn't see). Is the load-time about about 30-seconds with both?

Thanks for your patience :)

I am satisfied with the 30 second load time. Previously it was hitting about 3 to 5 minutes and definately not fast enough if I had to open something up. Both pc and mbp are at the 30 seconds now. One hd is hitachi 2tb and the others are 3x 1.5 tb seagates.
Lowering the display artwork slider was the trick to bringing it down to the current 30 seconds. Works for me. We can close this thread unless you want to research it more. Thanks Chad
