Hey guys

I just bought one of the new Macbook pros.

However, when i plug in my 57, it wont recognise it.

I've tried deleting the driver and reinstalling Serato, but that doesnt seem to work (do i need to have the 57 plugged in when i install serato or not?)

The Rane works fine on my Windows laptop.

Does anyone have any suggestions for this problem?

Thanks

What?
Really?

I don't have an answer for you but I'm tracking since I want one of these new MBPro's.
eugenehk 6:37 AM - 26 February, 2011
yep, i am running the higher spec 15 inch MBP

i have an SL1 at college, when i get there (tomorrow morning) ill see if that runs ok in my mac.

any advice anyone?
DJ Unique 6:40 AM - 26 February, 2011
Try re-installing the software again with the 57SL and/or SL1, however you shouldn't need to do that on OSX.

I though I read somewhere about a problem with newer Macs and USB 1.1
DJ Shin 9:35 AM - 26 February, 2011
True. I posted elsewhere just not. I got the 2011 13" MBPro 2.7 i7.

My SL1 connects fine. The 57 doesn't.

If you have any suggestions, please post.

Hi eugenehk.

I'll explain what is going on for everyone to avoid everyone having to read over other threads.

The new Macbook released in February 2011 are booting up into 64bit mode by default. This is causing issues when the computers connect to the Rane TTM 57-SL. There is a workaround as you can force your computer to boot into 32bit mode to get things working properly.

Try this: Turn off you Mac:
1) Power up your Mac. While your mac is starting up press the 3 and 2 keys at the same time. This will launch Mac OS into 32 bit mode.
2) To see if it worked go to the Apple icon in the top left corner of the screen. Select 'About This Mac' and then select 'More Info'. Go to software on left side this should give you specs. Under the 64bit if it said,"no" it changed, if "yes" is still there do it again.
(Thanks to djfelixmay for this!).

We are looking further into this issue at present, and will keep everyone updated with the findings. But for now, this workaround seems to offer complete usability.

NOTE: This looks to be isolated to the Rane TTM57-SL only, and no other devices.

Thanks.

Will there be any issues booting into 32 bit? (e.g. programs installed whilst in 64 bit mode wont work etc.?)

also does mac 32 bit run into the 3.5Gb RAM limit?

thanks

Matt-C 1:27 AM - 28 February, 2011
No, these modes won't change how you the system performs in any noticeable level, unless you are doing very high end science or maths type work.

I think the only limit you'd notice with this would be if you had over 32GB of RAM installed, and that would be pretty insane for a laptop.
Dj-Pyro 8:07 AM - 28 February, 2011
Anyway we can make the default boot mode 32 bit?
DJE-V 8:38 AM - 28 February, 2011
ya good question Pyro, i turned off macbook and it looks like we have to hit the 3 and 2 on every start up (not real fun)

Hi DeeJayTense.

Can you please start a new help thread over here: www.serato.com
Just let us know the issue and that it isn't working. Before you do, follow Step 2 to see if it did indeed boot into 32bit mode, as some users expressed the issue was still occurring, however their computers were still in 64bit mode, so it required another reboot.

Cheers.

Hi eugenehk.

So if you disconnect the 57's USB lead, then when you reconnect it, what happens?
eugenehk 9:51 PM - 1 March, 2011
Hi matt

if i disconnect the 57 USB lead whilst serato is still up (even minimized), a message from apple pops up saying you need to restart your computer by holding the power button.
Once you get this message, you cannot do anything except restart the computer - all buttons and trackpad are disabled.

thanks

Ok -thanks for letting us know. This is probably a kernal panic so if you can avoid this it will be best until we can resolve this issue.

Sorry in the meantime.
hersh20 6:23 PM - 2 March, 2011
has anyone bought a new macbook and it DID work out the box with the 57?
Proto J 8:09 PM - 2 March, 2011
^ i doubt it cuz it seems to be an issue with 64 bit, and all the new ones are 64 bit i think.

Matt-C 10:06 PM - 2 March, 2011
Apple are shipping these new Macbooks with the booting kernel as defaulting to 64-bit, so there wouldn't be anyone with an out of the box unit that worked straight away. However booting into 32-bit kernel fixes this issue.
Dj KRiS-T 8:22 AM - 3 March, 2011
Yup I have the same concerns you it seems that the TTM 57 does not work in 64 bits on the new MacBook Pro so we have started the 32-bit mac
here is the explanation for a permanent boot (startup default) 32 bits:
To select the 32 bit kernel for the current startup disk, use the following command in Terminal:

sudo systemsetup setkernelbootarchitecture-i386

Note: This setting is stored in / Library / Preferences / SystemConfiguration / com.apple.Boot.plist apply to each and booted from that disk. If it starts from a different disk, setting this record, or material default will apply.

ok great guys, i am planning on getting one of these machines and this is very helpful.
DeeJayTense 7:12 AM - 4 March, 2011
Thanks for your help Matt-C. I just had to unplug the USB and plug it back in after it had rebooted in 32 bit. Works now! Just hoping for an update soon.
hersh20 3:18 PM - 4 March, 2011
an update for this fix would be awesome!
DJ Eddie One 2:13 AM - 6 March, 2011
holding the number 3 and 2 on the keyboard at start up worked for me. but it doesn't fix the problem because you have to do it on every boot up and trying to change the boot up to 32 instead of 64 i don't recommend it you can mess up your computer and lose data. I'm gonna change the boot up to 32 but I'm gonna call apple or go to a apple store to get it done. i hope there's a fix soon because that message that pops up after you unplug the usb from serato scares me i had to do switch with another dj at this club last night and i had to unplug the usb and it gave me that message there's no way to sit there shut down serato and wait till it closes to unplug the usb specially when you have a big library.

If you do the following, you won't have that problem any more (as long as you're using the same startup disk):

(post I originally wrote in the General area):

This will save you the need to hold down the "32" keys when booting the computer:

Launch Terminal (in Applications/Utilities)

Copy the following line of text, and paste it into Terminal:

sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture i386

Hit return, and reboot the computer

Launch System Profiler (in Applications/Utilities)

On the left hand side, click on the "Software" item

On the right hand side, under "System Software Overview", verify that the item "64-bit Kernel and Extensions:" says "No".

While the above works, please be careful when doing so. We aren't officially recommending users do this because it's always dangerous when using Terminal.

We are working on this issue now, so the inconvenience of holding down 3+2 when booting up won't last for ever :D

Any time!
DJ-Tash 12:21 AM - 9 March, 2011
Not to be a hater, but this is a pretty weak situation. Re-booting every time is a huge hassle, plus I can't seem to save changes made in the session in SSL. Is anyone else having this problem? Every time I exit, the screen goes grey and it says I have to reboot. When I reboot, my crate changes aren't made. I'd like to know:

1) Is there a timeline for the 64 bit modification
2) Is there a way to manually save crates before exiting?

Thanks

Hi DJ-Tash.

You can permanently make the laptop boot into 32 bit mode (see here: serato.com). As for a time line, we will get the fix into the next version of Scratch Live - as normal, that will be when the version is ready and we never are able to give out dates because we only know when it's done, when it is actually done I'm sorry. It won't be too far off, but the workaround should fix this issue until a proper fix is out.

As for your other issue, that sounds like something else. Can you please start a new help thread (here: serato.com) detailing your issue, your full computer setup (include any USB devices, or hard drives you are using) and we will get onto helping you there. Cheers.
DJ-Tash 9:52 PM - 9 March, 2011
Anyone else having the same freezing/mandatory power-down issue as Eugenehk and I? Any crate changes aren't saved in the session and it's driving me crazy!

What?

is to prevent the message "restart your mac" appears
DJ-Tash 8:55 PM - 13 March, 2011
Not exactly sure what Kris-t is saying, but no matter how you try to close serato, you get the translucent screen with the "restart your mac" message.
Proto J 2:49 AM - 14 March, 2011
no, what he's saying is close serato first and then unplug the USB. it works, it's what i've been doing to avoid the kernal attack and having to restart my computer...
DJ-Tash 11:44 AM - 14 March, 2011
How are you closing serato to avoid the kernal attack? No matter what I do, exit through the pull down menu or hit the little red x circle, it still freezes with a power-down request.
Dj KRiS-T 6:53 PM - 14 March, 2011
Thank you Projo J!
Me by doing what I have say “to close serato before disconnecting the cable or of etindre the TTM” functions since I make this handling I is not more message saying to me to start again my mac.
Proto J 10:15 PM - 14 March, 2011
i dunno man, but everytime i close serato and then unplug the USB, i don't have the kernal attack.

now granted sometimes i have to CRTL-ALT-ESC to get serato to shut down, but apparently that's due to a corrupt database/library, or something...
Dj KRiS-T 11:49 AM - 21 March, 2011
hello to all!
do you have news for 64-bit serato?
Serato, Forum Moderator
Matt-C 10:44 PM - 21 March, 2011
Not yet. We are still working on the problem.

However, just keep booting to 32 bit mode for the time being.
