So, yeaaaaaa.
I've had this thread for what, 13 years maybe? And I've been DJing since 2007. Listening to Rap on the daily since like 93.
And I can say.....I have NEVER, in my life, seen a L.A. song blow up as quickly as Kendrick "Not like us." It is HUUUUUGE in L.A., and looks like most other cities view it the same way. Everything about the moment has lead to it, in the most perfect way. The fact that it's the two biggest Rappers of the last 10-12 years going head to head, with one being the commercial mega star while the other is more critically acclaimed, and with everyone always being on Kendrick for not making club hits....he did the most unexpected thing, and made a major club banger combined with a diss track.
I played it the very first night it came out, and the video clip of the club reaction went viral to where DJ Akademiks (who's blatantly on Drake's side), Hot 97, Complex, and several other outlets posted it. I was there for Drop it like it's hot, Humble, The Box, and many other songs that became huge, but I've never seen anything like this. Every car driving by has been playing it nonstop.
So, yeah. I know it's a moment, and with the subject matter, it may not be an eternal hit, bc it's pretty insane to have the crowd yell out "certified pedophile." But right now, it's the ONLY song that matters in L.A., and it's probably similar in other cities as well. Everybody came to my Monday night residency just to hear it, and they essentially all left within ten minutes after I played it, because that's the only reason they came out. This is just different.
