My question is always how do y'all keep up? I feel like I'm always missing out unless it's a real mainstream hit and whatever franchise record pool has. Honestly, the Soca, Reggae, and Dancehall are the only reasons why I even continue to hold an account with franchise record pool. I love spinning music from the Caribbean, especially Soca. Just gets the party going!

Kick Dem is a wicked rididm

Elastik Riddim

Ghetto Bible Riddim

New Money Riddim

@Spike: Just saw that dancehall sings riddim pop into the box. Def gotta check it out now that you mentioned it.

Then the ones from late last year like Promiscuous riddim. Demarco has been putting out hits on the riddims lately.

Gotta come back for the singles.
DJSP1KE 7:31 PM - 11 February, 2015
Elastik Riddim is a real good riddim , and Yea Demarco's hit form again in the last year or so .

Same with Turbulence , been a favourite of mine for years, made some real nice tunes end of last year. Hope to see more Hits From Mr Singy Singy Tarrus Riley this year also.
Dj Shamann 8:25 PM - 13 February, 2015
What's poppin' commercially right now?

Scenario: I play a Top 40 place, where we also play a lot of Reggae (sounds contradicting doesn't it? But that's Toronto)

Anyway, I just feel bored playing the usual Drinkin' Rum, Party Shot, Lost Angel etc. when it comes to the more modern section. I play a few riddims from 2014 that I featured on my summer mix and sprinkle in some stuff that's more current that I like, but I want to bridge the gap to train the crowd a little better to accept a more modern sound.

So I just need to listen to some current crossover or even core dancehall that just really hit big anthem status (released last six months or so)

DJ Quartz 8:41 PM - 13 February, 2015
Have to go hard on the sampler mixes once again.
DJSP1KE 9:02 PM - 13 February, 2015
Yea Mixtapes and local radios seems to help bring the new tunes up to date in the dances , but apart from hard fans theres not many places you can drop up to date tunes.

3 big riddims that worked from 2014 , Boom Box, Gwaan bad and Good book riddim

Kranuim - no body has to know was a massive dance tune.

But as far as commercialy goes its a hard subject
Matterhorn 12:20 AM - 14 February, 2015
What Spike Said. Tunes like miami vice episode are kinda crossovery. You should been able to get away with new money and promiscuous riddims. Russian Riddim may also work for you.

Those are the riddims I was talking about from my last years mix (the mix was actually called Miami Vice Episode lol) that I put into my Top 40 rotation.

^ see by the tracklist it's a "party mix"

I was just hoping by now we'd have a different set of chunes that could fit the bill.

There are the "Soca Gold" comps and some others. I've also found Youtube pretty helpful. The songs with over 10 million hits are probably pretty popular. Without listening to nonstop Soca for 2-3 weeks, the best thing would probably be to befriend a soca DJ and get info from him.

Also Carnival is just coming to an end now so I bet there will be a lot of posts about the top songs this year.

I have started mixing Dancehall Music and I am trying to understand how to Juggle the same riddim. I have read that you most reggae/dancehall tracks are made of 8 or 16 bars. Also most times you will have a intro which would be 8 or 16 bars and then the chorus which is also 8 or 16 bars and so it goes on through out the track.

So for example you will have Intro - Chorus- Verse and back to the Chorus again.

I have been advice that when the track playing through the speakers go back to the chorus you should then start the track in your headphones when the chorus of the tracks playing through the speakers begins.

Can anyone advice on how
they juggle dancehall music.

I am open to advice help and tutorials

With Dancehall I don't consider myself an expert but most of the time I find that mixing doesn't work. It's best to just drop tracks on top of eachother, create long mashups over the same "riddim" and backspin the fuck out of everything, adding airhorn to make it seem smoother. That's just me though, again not an expert but it's worked for the parties I've done.

No offence, that is literally the stereotypical way people play dancehalll music and I find it very lazy. You can mix perfectly its about track selection. The overuse of overpowering air horns to hide poor mixing is simply lazy.
DJSP1KE 3:12 PM - 3 March, 2015
yea i agree as above , reggae/dancehall can be mixed very well and clean with practice. learn about beats and bars , practice riddims that have simple beats, Older riddims can be harder as they varied in bpm and pitch on the same Riddim.

theres 1000s of riddims to choose so find one which starts with the beat for example, like Military Riddim, Once you perfect that add another similar riddim with similar bpm and beat and go from there.

I agree that mixing and blending tunes should almost take priority when in a session along with song selection. Unfortunately, one thing I noticed is that today's "top brand" selectors, especially the ones coming up now, can't mix or blend for $h*t. I am weary of selectors who use efx every 10 seconds masking their sloppiness and lack of skill by slamming tracks and cutting out songs before the big parts. I don't even really go to Dancehall spots anymore because of this. I must say though, some of my favorite selectors from days of past have fallen off in skillset, in my opinion, after transitioning to DVS/controllers. Songs are rushed, cut off and slammed more often than when you had to dig in your box for your 45's. Not sure what to make of this correlation though...

Mis dos centavos...
DJ J Money 10:36 PM - 3 March, 2015
So would be the general rule when mixing dancehall to start the track in your headphones when the chorus starts on the track playing through the speakers. The only think that gets me is when a track starts without a downbeat. Some dancehall reggae tracks start with the artist talking and there is no beat. Do take this as start of the track or do I cue up my track when I hear the first downbeat. Can I ask is a Downbeat the first beat of the track or can it be a piano rift or vocal intro on the track. I think the Happy Hour Riddim starts with a Piano intro and I always confused if this is the Downbeat or is it when I hear the first drum beat, Please Help
DJSP1KE 11:50 PM - 3 March, 2015
most reggae songs you can mix every 8 or 16 bars Depending on the instrumental, if an artist is speaking for 10 seconds ignore this on a general rule and listen out for the main beat.

while the song is playing listen to the song you want to bring in via your headphones. normally as the chorus starts on the track in Play you can start you next track if you have matched the beats and have the timing right. the next track will either be ready to drop half way through the chorus ( 8 Bars ) or as the chorus is finishing ( 16 Bars ) again Riddim dependent

if you get this right the next track your bringing in will flow as if both artists are on the same track.

practice makes perfect.
DJ Benny B NYC 4:46 PM - 4 March, 2015
"Dropping" reggae tracks correctly is an art - and when done correctly sounds just as good as mixing/blending. Dropping does not mean "slamming it in" or using effects to cover up your lack of skill.

If you are blending in the new song, and you can hear talking during the chorus of the previous song, that is wack.

Unless you have some form of intro, dropping is better.
RonDu 5:14 PM - 4 March, 2015
I have no problem with selectors "Dropping" tracks. Yes, it is an art/skill. Hence the usage of the "slamming" terminology.
DJSP1KE 9:45 PM - 4 March, 2015
dropping tracks seems to be a better way to entertain at a Dancehall night. But i prefer the mix/blend for mix cds , different ways to play for different environments. but agree it takes time and skill

Unless it's a reggae crowd, most crowds in the states won't know any current reggae. Reggae isn't that popular nationwide. A hip-hop crowd will know 5-10 songs from the last 5 years. For throwback parties, the early 2000s songs like Sean paul, Beenie Man, etc are big.

As usual, the only way to know current reggae is to listen to it.

I depends on the tunes, some big tunes you have to pull up. But I scratch, mix, remix and use word play especially with tunes on the same riddim.

As long as you keep the energy up and everything is clean and fluent, the crowd is good.

Nope I play in Toronto a few times a year and they go hard on dancehall tunes for real in just about any venue I rock in.

Where did I say they don't?

You play here a few times a year, I live in Toronto all year round. I'm also from Scarborough (T-Dot residents know), where even old rocker dudes know Capelton lyrics by heart. I'm aware of our natural born affinity for Reggae.

@DJ Shamann, that's Toronto for sure, where every party is Genre A, B and Reggae/Dancehall....

LOL

We have a friend who just came from Barbados, warming up for us lately. When explaining what age groups/demographics we're about to play for during various events, we break down which Dancehall/Reggae (Foundation, Singers, Classics, New) is preferred and how much of it in that particular venue.

Except when we're in Scarborough the answer is "doesn't matter if they ask for Katy Perry and look like Taylor Swift, at some point of the night you will be playing Vybz Kartel, and lots of it".

Oh I was agreeing with the sentiment that Canada loves their dancehall in just about any venue. Theres this one roots artists name Jah Cure the girls go mad over but he doesnt do dancehall but yea I love Toronto one of my favorite cities. Im actually back there May 16th at Gravity on Richmond street let me know if you wanna roll bruh
RonDu 5:45 PM - 29 April, 2015
I think Jah Cure was hotter when he was locked up. His newer joints, in my opinion, don't measure up to his incarcerated ones.

Yeah, and T-Dot loves their reggae/dancehall. Mad Indians from T-Dot be banging it along with their Chutney and Indian music.
DJSP1KE 6:57 PM - 29 April, 2015
I certainly Agree that Jah Cure became who he is while Inside. But i think he's made some amazing songs since release,

Stronger than Before,
Before i Leave
Nothing
Stronger - Scriptures Riddim

And many more big songs, heres a mix i did last year of Jahcure soundcloud.com

I've always followed @RobboRanx from BBc/1xtra. He left there last year, but he was always ahead of the curve and had plenty of vocals recorded exclusively for his show. He always put me onto riddims waaaay early.

Covering a lot of ground with these. But that's the style of this thread and the cross continent effect of dancehall rt now.
-----------------------------------------

2015 "QQ - Next One" inna di Blacklight Riddim will blend well with the West African joints - P-Square and such.

2015 "Busy Signal - Welcome" got dat 90s track mute vibe. Plus y'all probably know he remade 'Personally" as "Professionally". And "Greetings (Ribbidibbi)" will require pull ups and mess up your PA.

2015 "Don Andre - Tom Cruise" electro / trap crossover

2015 For the warm up set try "Mavado - Caribbean Girls", but speed it up a touch.

2014 I'll 2nd everything on boom Box. the Spice joint was massive and the riddim is so clean. Big PA riddim.

2014 Guitar String Riddim did really well for me. TOK killed "Burning Up" & Demarco 'Dutty Badmind"

2014 Dancehall / West Africa crossover - "Flavour - Nwa Baby Ashawo" gets big response.

2014 Soca "KES - Wotless"

And for a slept on feeeel good throwback from 2010, try "Jason Lyric - Remember When" or use the riddim with Single Ladies acapella.

Kes - Wotless is not 2014 soca. It is 2011.

New Kes songs for the past season have been, Million and Fallin.

Big dancehall riddims at the moment; Mildew, Jelllywatta, Purge 2k, Wrangla, Kuminar, 50cal, Success & Strive.

Popcaan - Junction is maddddd.

Hahah @ "Rasta Bass". Yea man this stuff Is my go do when I'm outside the U.S. Non-Dancehall crowds deal with this & the tropical bass stuff better than they do straight dancehall that's coming out of Jamaica right now. I usually sandwich current dancehall in between stuff like this so they still get the exposure but it's not a straight onslaught of "weird" shit for them.

Doesn't even work with my NYC dancehall crowd. Def not a crossover record IMO.
DJ Irv 4:05 PM - 20 July, 2015
Maybe I want to re-phrase my opinion of a crossover track.

I am talking about tracks that are played on mainstream radio (non reggae stations or not dancehall radio shows on mainstream stations) or that could possible see played on radio. I'll give some examples of past crossover songs.

Ghetto Red Hot
Rich girl
Murder She Wrote
Bam Bam
Action
Tempted to Touch
Satisfy Her
Ghetto Story
Like Glue
Pon De Replay
Turn Me On
Twice My Age
International Affair

Yes, I know they are played out but, they serve a purpose. Songs like Sorry - Foxy Brown got me into dance hall and I dug much deeper after that. There is a lot less dancehall on mainstream radio in the past decade.

Hi, Good day everyone after fully looking into all details for the launching our music pool. We took full measures and gaining correct access to content that we are allowed to provide. We connected to all major labels & work closely with several producers and DJs for special edits that you will only find via our record pool. We do not & will never pull / scrape from another pool. So to answer back our previous post yes we stated that before we even launched not knowing the full details what we needed before running a pool so we do apologize.
