I'm just curious to see what you guys do when your not Djing in order to make ends meet. I know some Djs do this fulltime but most others probably work during the day and DJ several times a night.
So what's your day job? How many nights a week do you Dj? Is it enough to pay the bills? Are you local or do you tour?
I'll start with myself. I work in a research lab during the day 9-5 M-F and I'm on the decks 3 nights a week Tuesday, Fri and Sat (and some Thurs depending). I used to only have to do 1 or 2 nights a week back in the day on vinyl and the pay was enough to suite my needs. But now with everybody wanting to pay the Dj as minimum as possible I need 3-4 nights a week to be good with my budget IN ADDITION to the day job.
Just curious what you guys's day jobs are and what you guys have to do to pay the bills.

I'm in financial services. It pays the bills, healthcare, retirement and day to day living. I also teach/train martial arts 3 nights a week (don't really get paid though, I just trade my teaching time for my training).

Work at a law firm. Not necessarily fulfilling work but I think it will open up opportunities in the future. At least i hope it does.
Honestly, most of my time is spent looking for more work. I haven't been at a 9-5 where I didn't feel like not getting out of bed 4/5 months down the line. Jobs always seem great and then I start asking myself "wtf am I doing here?" It all goes back to not really knowing what I want to do. I haven't found that career yet. Gotta keep looking I guess

Im past considering, its all ive thought about day in and day out for over ten years now lol. My only hurdle is its kinda dufficult to find new jobs in out of state markets, plus i want to move to a top tier city so its harder finding a job in those places due to competitive job markets.

because i work in a research lab, I always have to think of new and unique ways to setup experiments that will actually work lol. I feel that this has enhanced my creativity in the Dj game because I always try and think outside the box when am doing mixes, mixing old and newschool stuff, hearing distinct sounds/breaks in a record etc.
but obviously all of us have our own ways of being creative lol

Ya I have the college degree but im not sure if it worth the $$ investment to go back to school. Also I dont understand how it would work time wise, ive looked at the MBA course work schedules and they look like a tough fit for someone with a 9-5. I know you can take night classes but that seems like it would take forever to earn the degree just taking night classes.
What really fustrates me is they have a new degree program in a school the next state over that I REALLY want to persue (IT Security) but the class schedule would be impossible to make work with my day job.

I feel like there is my problem. I can't even realistically say I've started A career. I've just had a bunch of dead end jobs. And yes I do have a degree but honestly I went to school bc it was the "right" thing to do. And I refuse to go pursue graduate studies without a plan. Not going to commit that mistake. I have a bunch of friends who either have a Masters and they are working jobs where they are overqualified or they have a Masters talking about they gonna go get another bachelors bc they don't like their current situation. Idk maybe I'm overthinking it.

LOL I know right, I was originally brought in to convert everything from fox pro to visual fox pro (I had never even HEARD of fox pro before then lol), 10 years later they are finally coming through on their original promise of when I was hired of converting everything to c# (I'm a c# SQL kinda guy).
In the long runs its kinda fucked me because where as Ive gained a TOOOON of useful info about the healthcare\insurance industry, technically, I have 10 years professional fox pro experience which in todays modern tech world might get me a cup of coffee. I feel like my 10 years at this place really wasted my time because not only did I not learn any new advanced skills, the ones I learned in college are rusty as fuck. All of which makes getting a new job in a better city kinda tough

LOL I know right, I was originally brought in to convert everything from fox pro to visual fox pro (I had never even HEARD of fox pro before then lol), 10 years later they are finally coming through on their original promise of when I was hired of converting everything to c# (I'm a c# SQL kinda guy).In the long runs its kinda fucked me because where as Ive gained a TOOOON of useful info about the healthcare\insurance industry, technically, I have 10 years professional fox pro experience which in todays modern tech world might get me a cup of coffee. I feel like my 10 years at this place really wasted my time because not only did I not learn any new advanced skills, the ones I learned in college are rusty as fuck. All of which makes getting a new job in a better city kinda tough

Mine came very natural, when I was growing up (like 5th grade) I would go to the library and get programming books, used to spend summers trying to find "hacker" how tos on AOL, took programming classes in jr high and high school ect ect. I had planned on continuing my education into law after my original degree but i couldn't take another day in oxford ms
Thanks for sharing dude.
Shhhhiiiiiiitttt. When I think of what has come natural to me in life it's always been something art-sy/liberal. Since I was a kid all I ever been interested in was writing, spoken word, film, and music. It all ties to human expression but shit even I knew as a kid that I didn't want to be a starving artist. Fuck it. ::pours out some whiskey::

i'm actually a pipefitter by trade, on the service side of things. That covers heating and cooling of larger commercial buildings. Started out on the lighter commercial side, (srtip malls, smaller office buildings and schools, etc.). Progressed to larger buildings and factories. Did more than my fair share of rooftop units, (both heat and cool), working in the bitter cold and extreme heat. Progressed on to large boilers and and a/c systems. Now I am pretty much large industrial, large high-rise, hospital type buildings working on the large tonnage cooling for comfort and process work in the factories. There is a lot of money at stake if things break down.
I've done everything from weld, fit, cut and fix new, damaged and existing piping to troubleshooting electrical issues, mechanical issues to repair and troubleshoot electronics.
In a nutshell, I with the mechanical side of a building. Installation, service and maintenance, design, etc.
My job has absolutely had influence on DJing. It has taught me how to work under pressure, for one. Nothing like being at one of the Ford, Chrysler or GM plants on a service call (on a piece of equipment you are not familiar with to boot, sometimes) and the line is down. That costs them about $ 1 Million/minute. Or at a hospital that is canceling surgeries that day because the equipment is down, or the high rise office buildings with tenants that pay thousands in rent, but have a clause that if the temp drops above and below said number, they don't have to pay. This has also taught me how to deal with people and customers.
It has also taught me not to panic so much if isn goes wrong, and to have a backup (plan and equipment).
My day job gave me an excellent understanding of how things work, so I am not afraid to tear in to my DJ equipment if it needs repair, for example.
I feel like I just wrote a resume... anybody hiring? Lol!

Industrial Engineer/Quality Manager by day, club DJ by night. If I found another decent way to make $200/night on hours I'm not committed to job A I would probably quit DJ'ing clubs and just do private parties on occasion.
Dj'ing is a blast, but sometimes I need a break from the same top 40 music over and over again and demanding shitty people!

Oh, I forgot... I just do mobile gigs right now. Nothing steady, just whatever I can get. My day job does allow me to be a little selective on the gigs I agree to take. I don't have to sell myself short and accept gigs I don't really want out of desperation.

I had a day job and my own DJ company, but the investment side of it was getting to crazy (no regrets tho), my highest event made me just a little over 7k after paying taxes/labor and all that jazz (I know that's not much, but believe me I know I could of made far more with an investor). Not only was it a great learning experience, but also helped me buy a house in one of my areas best neighborhoods! Now I just buy and sell equipment and work full time for my area's best event production companies… www.freestyleentertainment.com

Where I'm from not much at all, in fact all the highest paid DJs don't even do clubs. Pay = 100 to 200 max a night and for most you need to take some kind of gear. When I was doing clubs for promotions (which didn't help, you'll learn most people that even go to clubs most likely can't even afford top dollar production) I was making 200 to 300 (max) a night 3 to 4 nights on top of a regular job. I haven't even tried to DJ a club in years, but I bet it's hard as sh** to even get 200 a night these days.

I'm sure there are a FEW people in the jail who don't deserve to be. But I assure you that the majority of the prisoner population reminds all of us why they're there regularly. I'm familiar with the whole "the man is holding me down" concept. And occasionally it's true. But what I see the most is people who are holding themselves down. And it makes me very sad. If that's not your thang listen to Git Up Git Out by Outkast and take it to heart.

If it's against the law to put drugs in your body, then you belong in prison if you get caught doing it. Sure it doesn't "hurt" anyone but yourself, but neither does not paying your taxes and shit like that...all still against the law and can and should land you in prison. Don't assume someone isn't intelligent or educated my friend. I'm sure you have your reasons, as do I, for forming our opinions. Have a good day.

And to Latindj, most if not all laws are created as a form of control, enforcement is a way to maintain the status quo and to keep generating revenue for the state. Black and Latinos make up a large part of the prison population which means that slavery has not ended it has just merely transformed into something more palatable.

If you break the law and get busted then you need to pay the price. Criminals should read US law books before committing crimes so that they are not surprised by there sentences.

- So your saying people who are on drugs (heroin, crack, meth) are not dangerous to others or themselves? WRONG!

- Are far as marijuana is concerned, it's harmless but most of the time it's a gateway drug for harder stuff

Big fuckin surprise here^! The turd in the punch bowl chimed in. Obviously two different crimes. Plus the biggest culprit is alcohol. So if you want to get rid of all of it, you are all righteous, but considering we're djs, we'd be out of jobs. I know Johnny likes a couple Incredible Hulks washed down with few mudslides maybe white Russians. I know anyone with this opinion feels "affected" by this issue or have the hood conservative mind set that "everybody else just can't understand". So if you don't realize by now that the "war on drugs" was a construct of our government that brings in billions to certain federal agencies, your a boob. And your the same person who loves the Patriot act and seat belt laws. You probably can't think for yourself so you need the government to tell you how to.

If ya'll think drug offences should be jailable, you are all way more wack than I thought you were already. It's a complete and under waste of tax payers money. I say legalize it all and stop clogging the system. People should be jailed for being dangers to others not themselves.Another ignorant statement.
- So your saying people who are on drugs (heroin, crack, meth) are not dangerous to others or themselves? WRONG!
- Do you know that tax payers pay for rehab for these idiots when they decide they want to get clean? There are drug addicts who use methadone for decades on our tax money
- Are far as marijuana is concerned, it's harmless but most of the time it's a gateway drug for harder stuff

Not all of them, there are plenty who pay for their own rehab. They also pay taxes so its their right. Our taxes also provide pay for child services. I dont have kids why should they get my $$ kids dont pay taxes

Your comparing child services to drug rehab? Most of the children who are in child services care are from parents who are drug addicts.

Ahhhh, Jethro is back...
I'm sure you came to that conclusion because your brain is on drugs...
No surprise that someone with your upbringing would think that it's OK.
There's no surprise that Alcohol is the biggest culprit, so basically you start slow, and work your way up to being a full blown meth-head.
Enjoy your cousin.
This is written by a man (I use the term loosely) that clearly lacks life experience. Age doesn't make you wise Johnny Boy. The fact that you think someone from Mass is backwoods shows your ignorance. I'm sure you've never left the Armpit of America or even your destitute town you live in. It's no wonder you can't understand if they took the drugs and made them all legal your Moms may be able to stop suckin dick for coke. And yo, I never went any where. You're a bitch troll, you always will be, and you'll continue to counter the popular opinion. Your mad cause your good days are behind you, you never even left your home town as DJ so your bitter. We can all see through you kid so just stop frontin.
And that other fool Mez or whatever, your just a conservative prick with a narrow mind and no facts. Look up treatment for drug abusers vs incarceration. You might learn something. Read something other than the Drudge Report, watch something other than Fox News and gain some perspective. Besides, your Mom smoking crack only made you sorta dumb.

I've learned that just spending a LOT of money on something, doesn't mean
that you'll get a quality product for example this -> webshop.cashconverters.com.au
C'mon, fader dying 2 weeks in?
AND the INCLUDED REPLACEMENT FADER ALSO?
Aww hell naw...
So since then, I always do my research cuz Sam Ash was NOT taking it back...

Politics should just be banned in threads like these. I used to date a girl who's parents were on opposite sides as far as their beliefs went, but they always had one rule though when visiting family... No politics talk whatsoever at the dinner table. That shit always starts wars.
