I venue I play at has a few of these in house and I swear every time I go there at least one is not working or rattling. When they all run it sounds ok. Kinda flat imo.

I hope this one will sound good. I will see this guy this weekend and agreed to buy it for $400. It's on Craigslist actually.

Habinger is very much a budget brand, and in pro audio, you generally get what you pay for. This is an entry-level sub. Don't expect anymore than that out of it!

I personally would not recommend this sub for the professional working dj. But its better than nothing if you're on a limited budget and have no choice.

So why do you think this guy is selling it?
If you make this ill-advised purchase, think about your upgrade path... either a second Harbinger or a better sub. How serious are you with doing mobile gigs? I'm guessing your budget is tight but what is your price range you'd spend for a sub?

Start at half retail. Used gear, especially value brands, is not worth as much as people think

DjjS... don't get taken like that spending $400 (used) on a $450 (new) speaker. Like Disgrace mentioned, you should be paying no more than $300 on a sub like that.
I'd be shooting for the $250 range...

Before you buy, ask the seller if he knows what "gain staging" is. If the answer's "no", offer him $50.

If you can save another 100-200 you should be able to get a good yorkville or qsc sub on craigslist that you can add on to for the future

I agree with Nemix....you could get a used Yorkville LS700p on ebay or an American Audio sub like the one linked below. Not the greatest but better than that Harbinger idea.

Have you looked at the weight of that sub? 187 lbs! It's very much an old Mackie SWA1801 clone.

I think that is the good choice over that sub by for the weight, it might be an issue for mobile Djing.

DjjS - Personally I own 4 Harbinger HP118 powered subs since 2010 & 2011. Started with 2, liked them so much that I bought 2 more. They slam for the price. I use them for weddings, corporate events, school dances and rentals for close homie DJs that I know will use them respectfully. Only at school dances do I ever need to almost max out their gains. I've never ever had one single issue with them, no thermal clipping, no woofer cone tearing, no amplifier going out on it, nothing. They've been used at least >80 gigs by my own estimation. I made back the $$ I paid for it in 3 larger gigs. They have made me so much money after that. Many people on the forum dislike Harbinger because it's a value brand, but I will definitely say otherwise.
With that said however...I purchased mine new with extended 2 year warranty from Guitar Center...if the one you're checking out is the newer generation model with the BBE processor and it's already being resold (this model only came out less than half a year ago I believe), you really need to ask the seller some questions about why he's selling it and test drive and listen that sucker.
In my experience:
Pros:
18" sub
looks nice
slams sufficiently for general mobile gigs
Casters
light enough to lift by one person
full range thru and 100Hz thru
**BBE processor on the newer model (**but I have no experience about this because I have the older model)
Cons:
Value brand
Not as good of a warranty as other brands
Need a van, truck, SUV to transport
Hope this helps you make a choice decision.

^^^ 1st hand experience right there. He's right about the value brand thing. If I had that sub, I'd just remove the logos and keep it moving. :-)

With that said however...I purchased mine new with extended 2 year warranty from Guitar Center...
FYI... here's a snippet of the regular Harbinger warranty:
This warranty does not cover service or parts to repair damage caused by neglect, abuse, normal wear and tear and cosmetic appearance to the cabinetry not directly attributed to defects in materials or workmanship. Also excluded from coverage are damages caused directly or indirectly due to any service, repair(s), or modifications of the cabinet, which has not been authorized or approved by Harbinger. This two (2) year warranty does not cover service or parts to repair damage caused by accident, disaster, misuse, abuse, burnt voice-coils, over-powering, negligence...
So, don't think you can rent it out to your homies w/o fear of damage. GC's extended warranties are usually good about covering anything as they'll just give you a new unit on the spot (depending on the location).

I've heard them, for the money they are OK if you are limiting them to wedding / small party use. If you are trying to make it like the club, they will not hit hard enough, run out of steam, and possibly die a horrid death. The worst things most audio amateurs do is not bring enough rig for the gig, but then try to make it do what they want anyways.
...and if anyone asks, tell them you've loaded the subs with Turbosound drivers....

Agree. How about the QSC KW181 - can it be used in the big events or in club?

Definitely a step up. I think the most popular DJ type setups are using the QSC KW181, Yorkville LS800/801P, JBL VRX918, PRX518, PRX718, EV LiveX and SBa760.
A big step up from there would be EAW, JTR & Danley.
How much sub varies on the room, amount of people, placement of cabinets, tops they are paired to, etc..
My EV SX200 tops paired well with 1 Yorkville 800p sub. My EV ZXa5 tops would require 4-6 of the same sub to balance the sound (at volume).

Certainly they can but you'll need multiples depending on the venue and crowd size. You've made a big jump moneywi$e, from $450 - $1300. What size events do you plan on doing? What vehicle do you have to tote your equipment around? Are you a one-man show? (nm)

Yes. I'm a one man band. I play most at the wedding events about 120-150 people in the room approximately 1000-1500 square feet.

I've been running a couple QSC HPR181's for a few years now. I compared it to the JBL equivalent, the new QSC KW series, and the Harbinger. Not much difference in the store demo. Not sure about a larger room full of people though.
I did see that G.C. had a new Harbinger folded horn sub similar to the Cerwin Vega scoops...

It's definitely not a bad thing. I've used B-52 products in the past and they have the best customer service that I've ever encountered.
I was at Guitar Center in January looking at subs and speakers and the sales guy suggested taking a listen to the Harbinger sub and dual 15" speaker. They sounded pretty good together. Especially with the BBE processing activated. Pretty big sound coming from them.
That sub looks like it is modeled after an old B-52 sub I used in the past. After I sold that sub I really regretted it. I needed the money at the time. The Harbinger should be a solid sub if it is modeled after that sub I had. Here is a link to the sub:
