DJ Art Pumpin Payne 3:24 PM - 6 September, 2008
It is actually built around a dance (no soulja boy), and is a evolution of Ghetto House (or Ghetto Tech here in Detroit, Detroit Jits - Chicago Jukes).

Here is a video to explain the early evolution:

and here is an example of Juke/jit:

Would "Watch My Feet" qualify? Are there other examples from the genre that have crossed over to mainstream?

What's the bpm range of the genre?

Don't the Brits also use this as a genre name? So, are US Juke and UK Juke completely unrelated or is there some common ground and/or overlap?

In the immortal words of Lil Jon.... WHAT?

The BPM range I'd say is around 150. Here in Michigan we are "pitch crazy", so we speed it up to around 165. Some of those young dudes can jit to it without missing a beat.
DJBlisk 10:20 PM - 8 September, 2008
Its dnb without the crazy drums and an actual melody.

I love it. but nobody in the U.S. except for chicago knows how to react to it.

its a red bull version of bmore.

That's the best bit of D'n'B, except for the big ass basslines. 174bpm snares and hi-hats FTW.

I dont see my crowd doing any of that weird shit... Maybe some fat bitches that are trying to loose weight. LOL
AlphaTrion 1:16 PM - 14 September, 2008
150 bpm seems a bit much...most of my Juke tracks are around 140...a couple peak around 145.

I've always seen it as a close cousin to baltimore club.

DJ Dynamite - NJ 8:12 PM - 14 September, 2008
Juke...ain't just that DJ Funk stuff? We just call that booty house.
DVDjHardy 8:18 PM - 14 September, 2008
Big ups to you Blisk, because it seems like unless you're from Detroit or Chicago, most people just don't get it.
DJ Dynamite - NJ 8:29 PM - 14 September, 2008
Don't get it twisted Hardy...I get it.
I've been rockin to that stuff since the 90's, but in Jersey we just call it Booty House. Never knew the actual term was Juke. Just goes to show, you're never to old to learn something new.

Not referring to you Dynamite, lol. I personally don't care about how genres are labeled, because I tend to play every genre almost every gig. I'm referring mostly to crowds that aren't gonna dig this stuff, just because it sounds different than the regular radio BS. The same people who get down to the 75bpm song will complain that they can't dance to the 150bpm version...they don't get it!
Rob - Low 8:51 PM - 14 September, 2008
I also get it.... But it doesnt rock where im at.
I did do a few parties in Jerz where they like that shit, especially the teen crowd. Thats from my experience

Yep yep.

Amazing that just now (after 13 years) many are rediscovering what the white kids knew about for over a decade LOL.

Umm didn't Daft Punk pay tribute to all the pioneers with 'Teachers' off the Discovery Album. HAHAHA once again the French and the Europeans adopt Black Dance Music before America does. Because Techno, House and the likes are and were truly Black Music first, I love that Rock n Roll mentality of the mainstream.

You know many of you are bitching about the loss of culture and the bastardization of music, yet you fail to discover the richest resources in your own back yard. So now who do you blame?

I would say yes.

Recently one of the biggest arguments is if Chicago or Detroit started dancing like this first. We had a TV dance show in the 80's called "The Scene" and cats used to dance like that on there.

I got some joints hittin 160s such as Bounce by DJ Clent. That shit sends parties up.
Dj Scarface 12:01 AM - 18 September, 2008
bounce by DJ Clent = 160 bpm's???? Do you double your bpm's, cause I got that track on vinyl & it's only 80 bpm's. plus the same when I ripped it to mp3...
Mr. Goodkat 11:12 PM - 20 September, 2008
"Because Techno, House and the likes are and were truly Black Music first,"

where do you think that stuff came from?? You don't think any of those guys were inspired by euro electronic bands like Kraftwerk??? History does not end in the 80s.

Guys Im from Chicago and the king of juke is DJ Funk. Hands down.... that shit is from the west side... trust me. the land of the Da Brat!!! Oh and no it is not booty house, i repeat not booty house. Booty house is; for example Perculator by cajmere, also a classic "The House of God"... and the infamous "there's some Hoes in this house" Now there are some old school that will fall into Booty House. A great example would be "magic feet". Revived due to the techno remix back in the mid 90's. Any questions?
wilkins820 3:34 AM - 4 October, 2008
i believe he asked for an explanation of juke...

i didn't explain it myself but yet just dropped a link to a juke mix
