Volume levels in DJ

bumbo08 4:48 PM - 13 March, 2013
Might just be me but is anyone else's gain control set to 12 o'clock with EVERY song?

It's going into the red all the time on the VU meter on the software but not the DDJ-SX. if I turn it down on the software, it resets to 12 when I load a new song into that deck.

I don't use auto-gain but can't remember this happening with Itch...

Are you sure you haven't turned on autogain by mistake?

That behaviour is exactly what you'd expect if autogain was on, and set at too high a DB level.
damehype 8:30 PM - 13 March, 2013
This was happening to me also. I actually turned ON auto gain to correct it

Yes it's definitely NOT on its really weird. I even double checked the set up against how I had Itch set up and auto gain is off yet this issue doesn't happen in Itch. The volume is much lower then auto gain increases it.

I just tried that and auto gain seems to correct this which to me is the opposite of how it should work surely?

I don't want auto gain on. To me it just doesn't sound right...

You should definitely start a help request at this point because something is clearly wrong...

Hi Guys, the same Problem, channel gain and master gain display at 12 o'clock and doesn't react to DDJ SX, with autogain sound outpout lower :(( If no BPM info aviable on track (only TAP displayed), I can only hit play or scratch, no loops or anything else...
Mr Heeed 7:21 PM - 15 April, 2014
Also having this problem. Levels were fine in SL but since the switch to DJ everything is redlining within the software and clipping. Any luck with that help request?
Mr Heeed 7:23 PM - 15 April, 2014
Even with an autogain of 89db I still get clipping.
gfunk 6:04 AM - 16 April, 2014
I have this problem. I always have to turn the gain down on the software, even with my mixer's gains right down. There also doesn't appear to be any master volume to help either. Auto gain sometimes helps and sometimes does the opposite. Very weird and actually quite annoying.
deancrake 12:50 AM - 20 April, 2014
I noticed this after I put 1.6 on everything has shot up on the track levels having to crank it back on the fly all the time ...bit of a pain but can deal with it ..just make put it on the sop list when you load a track ...
deancrake 12:51 AM - 20 April, 2014
sop ( standard operating procedure )
gfunk 8:13 AM - 21 April, 2014
I'm glad it's not just me, what I dont understand is why there isn't a main output volume control to avoid the tendency towards laptop mixing. I want to use my mixer to set the levels - not the software. I find it really frustrating.
SiRocket 6:28 PM - 21 April, 2014
Gotta love how set autogain volumes in SSL don't always transfer over to serato dj. And you have to unlock the beat grids in order to set the autogain in dj. Pain in the ass
DJ LIL M 6:35 PM - 21 April, 2014
yeah some of my tracks be red. i just turn them down in the software.
soundboyz 10:22 PM - 21 April, 2014
Have you all ever try to USED Platinum Notes to fix the volume issue
gfunk 8:30 AM - 22 April, 2014
Actually there is no way round this, you just have to turn the gain down each time a track is loaded. At least it recalls the position next time round though. I wish I could use a midi controller for it instead but even with the SP1 I'm still using the computer to switch to ABS and alter the OTT gain.

Not used platinum notes.....

Hello Everyone!!!

I'm having the same issues on my Serato DJ. Ever since I did an upgrade. It's going into the red all the time on the VU meters on both decks. And my headphones sound like they want to tear my ear drum all the time I upload a new song.
Your help and input will be helpful...... Thank you guys.....

I turned off autogain as all my tracks were red lining and sounding crap. I had to set every track gain manually. was a PITA but its done now. Took such a long time!!
On new track imports, I set the gain along with cue points etc.

I guess i could have used software such as mp3gain but chose to do it manually.
El Gran Favio 12:58 PM - 28 September, 2016
Can you please tell me how do I go about setting gains on each track manually?
AKIEM 4:29 PM - 28 September, 2016
If all your tracks a 12oclock that means auto gain is OFF.

Auto Gain sets a level that "sounds" equal for each track. If you are using auto gain and many (more than just a couple that didn't work right) lower your auto gain.

Auto gain is a nondestructive, all it does is set a level. All your tracks should be set to a different gain when using auto gain.
DJ Tecniq 6:11 PM - 28 September, 2016
Auto gain sucks I disabled it myself. SSL's master output level at least could affect the gain volumes to fix clipping issues but the master output level in SDJ does not affect the track gain it works completely different. I actually have the opposite but with auto gain on the audio sounds not as crisp and muddy imo and the levels weren't high enough at 92 db so I don't use it.
AKIEM 6:43 PM - 28 September, 2016
Auto Gain has always worked fine for me. Maybe 1 out of 100 it gets wrong and needs manual adjustment. Not sure how it would make a track sound 'muddy' its just a volume setting.

I actually have had issues with the gain being too low now. I just upgraded to the latest version 1.9.9 recently. How do you set the gain so that it sticks for that track? Does it always revert back? Do I have to unlock the track for it to save it? Should auto gain be turned off so that it does reference whatever I have set it to previously?

Thanks in advance.
mixgoonie 9:24 AM - 16 October, 2017
I always have a mouse connected and lower the gain manually to be a 89db.

Autogain is not always working when enabled even if you press the keyboard combination to apply autoagain gain when playing the track.
