Files become locked after dragging them into crate but older files remain unlocked. The library protection is set to off. I checked the hard drive and it says read only and I don't know how to turn that off. I think that might be the problem but I didn't change anything before it started to do this. The files I recently added disappear when I restart serato and only the unlocked files are there.

What format is your external drive?

1st Id like to say thanks for responding to my question. I have come to find that my hard drive is NTSF 2tb and my back up Hard drive is Fat 32 1&1/2tb. When I tried the Fat 32 hard drive, I can read and write to it. So I'm hoping that's the problem. If that's the case, I'll have to get another 2tb drive and format it to Fat 32 and transfer everything to it from my NTSF drive thinking I will use the NTSF drive for archiving. What do you think? Thanks again.

Macs cannot write to Windows NTFS formatted external drives, so yes, that's the problem.

Thanks for your quick response. If I can ask you one more thing? Do you think if I get an external hard drive that is formatted to Mac, would that be the best thing to do? And would I be able to transfer files to this drive off of my PC?

If you are planning on using the drive with a PC than I would reformat the drive to Fat32 using your Mac.
If you don't ever plan on wanting to use that drive with a PC than format it Mac Journaled.

A PC won't see a Mac Journaled drive at all.

Here are the directions you'll need to reformat the drive --> serato.com
And walks you through how to reformat the drive to MS-DOS which is FAT32 in the PC world.

Thanks again to all of you that helped me with this problem.
I have also discovered another solution to this problem for others users that may have the same issue.
I downloaded software called "NFTS to Mac" installed it on my Mac & now I can read and write to any NFTS windows drive I use.

Thanks again for all the help!
