Serato Video General Discussion

Talk about Serato Video and Video-SL.

whats the best video format?

Rockstar JC Flores 3:12 PM - 10 April, 2008
I finally just got my video sl plugin today, and I noticed that they list other types of files that Serato Video will accept.

What do you guys recommend? MP4 seems pretty clean to me, but takes to long to convert,

any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated,

thanks,

JC

I use MP-4 for now but I've seen some good AVI files and want to test with them sometime next week. . .

If any of you know anything about AVI files feel free to post up some info.

MP4 is a container. It supports many different kinds of codecs. The codec most of the guys using VSL favor, is H.264 video encoding with AAC audio encoding.

Some folks have reported using Xvid encoding in their MP4 containers but they are in the minority, since Quicktime codecs don't natively support most Xvid encoding.

Go with MP4 containers, H.264 encoding and you'll be alright.

I also use what Swift suggested MP4 : H.264

That's why I want to play with this because I seen a movie @ 700MB in xvid and one @ 700 MB in AVI and both looked better then Mine @ 1800 Kbps MP-4-H.264 2 pass encoding @ 1.5 GB

If you have time help me understand why. . .

Yea I encode one Promo only dvd in 8 to 10 hrs too (lol) but I'm just asking to understand it and ? it?

i'll put money on a proper encoded MP4, H.264 will smoke a XVID AVI in quality at the same size and bitrate. That's a bet.
Culprit 6:04 PM - 10 April, 2008
I suggest h.264 MOV Files, Sound Encoded in AAC 160kbs, Frames 25600. The thread that really helped me out on the best format was this. Thanks to DJ Steel

well from what i have heard from steel on his youtube video, he's been using avi, just that avi is about 1-1.5gb for just one video, so i'm assuming if you have the space on your harddrive, you may wanna try it and it comes out better, supposedly, not sure, since i haven't tried it,

my settings right now are from sixxx's tutorial but i have the quality set to "go nuts" and everything comes out pretty good.

anyone else wanna share, much appreciated,

JC

VSL/Quicktime does not have native support for AVI files. You'll need to use additional codecs to make this work. Many guys are doing Perian.

I just found the best format to use; 3GP! You need to upgrade to SL 1.8.1 pb2 to get this to work. I convert all my videos with an old razr cell phone at 5fps, 120x80 resolution, .256mb bitrate. Tested in VSL, no video dropouts, perfect video on my cell phone screen and audio is banging at 32kbps mono. HOLLA!
sixxx 9:15 PM - 10 April, 2008
hahahaha D-Twizzle!!!!

you forgot to say.... and I save so my space on my hard drive. hahaha
D-Twizzle 9:57 PM - 10 April, 2008
sorry, i forgot. files are under 10mb each so i don't need an external hd and don't need to worry about usb2 vs fw400/800.

D-Twizzle never ceases to amaze.

and most important on pc, cpu is only running at 95% instead of 100%. macs run at 10%.

I'm talking movies? not music videos but I see what you're talking about. . . I'm going to rent the movie I got in XVID and rip it in H.264 then. . . If I see you're wrong I'll drive down to LA and get the money from you. . . haha maybe see a mix or two well I'm there, if you don't mind. . .

??? You lost me with this statement.

First, AVI is not a format...it is a container, so its more than likely that both of those movies were in the Xvid/DivX format.

Second, are you saying the size of the other two movies came up to 700 MB while the size of yours was 1.5GB?

Third, your H.264 movie should be encoded at 2500 Kbps at least, and 1800 Kbps will indeed look like shit compared to a Xvid conversion.

Fourth, maybe a stupid question but....were all these copies of the exact same movie??
marknonsense1 3:22 PM - 11 April, 2008
No not the same movie but you just told me what I want to hear. . . Xvid and DivX do look better @ a smaller bit rate. RIGHT that's what you just said. . .
marknonsense1 3:23 PM - 11 April, 2008
How does Itunes ENCODE their movies? Bit rate also. . .

Well he did not say which bitrate the Xvid compressed had, so I understand it as "H.264 at 1800 looks shit compared ot XVid (at any rate?)" ... which makes no sense either I guess. :)
marknonsense1 12:37 AM - 14 April, 2008
Thats right nik39 the xvid is only 700MB for the whole movie and looks better then my 1800kbps H.264 movie @1.5 total size. . . I'll be testing later this week. . .
matt212 4:19 PM - 14 April, 2008
I was saying that H.264 @ 1800 will look like shit compared to a Xvid @ 2500. Well maybe not like a big shit but maybe a small turd would be a better comparison. :)
sixxx 5:11 PM - 14 April, 2008
... a small turd with corn in it? :P
matt212 5:14 PM - 14 April, 2008
...Or maybe just a fart better. haha

what is the best conversion size to bring down 1920 1080 to a smaller size for serato video
Culprit 5:39 PM - 28 November, 2016
720p or 540p
Mauro Verdoliva 2:00 PM - 1 December, 2016

Sorry to bother you guys but this really seems to be the only thread i can find about mp4 video playback. I also have a problem of FBR ( by BB Flashback) to MP4 playback. I downloaded this video conversion program to convert fbr to mp4 (www.videoconverterfactory.com) as you can see. In the article it mentions that i can directly convert a video to any formats, but after I added my FBR video into the program, it requested me to choose a codec. There were 2 sorts of codecs, H264 and MPEG4, i do not know which codec should select. I also find another type of video file whose name is .MJPEG when searching the internet and I do not know what are the relations between these 3. As for H264, i know that it is a compressed encoder, so i am worrying that there may be some quality loss in the course of conversion to some extent, is that true? The video output resolution and frame rate is 720p- 60fps and i do not literally like to decrease the file size by losing video output quality and decreasing it to 30fps which is less smooth. So, anyone has any ideas how i can safely choose a proper codec? H264 or MPEG4?
Culprit 5:49 PM - 15 September, 2017
ive encoded thousands of video files.

Your safe with 720p, 30fps or 24fps. 5k Birate, h.264/aac
