REALLY??? So WHEN are Harddrive prices going to go down?

DJJOHNNYM_vSL3 3:44 PM - 9 September, 2012
2 TB @ 7200 RPM's with 16mb of cache should be 100 BUCKS by now....wtf?
DJ DisGrace 3:57 PM - 9 September, 2012
uh-oh, the percs wore off.... Johhny's mad!

But yes, I agree, prices have been stuck for at least 2 yrs. I used to be able to double my capacity for less money every year.

I just picked up a couple of 3TB Externals for $139 each....

They already did. SSDs are insanely cheap, even compared to 6 months ago.

Spinning drives are still expensive because the two main players realised that after the Taiwan floods, people were still buying drives at double the price, so even though supplies are back to normal, they're still charging over the odds... Simply because they can.
djpuma_gemini 7:09 PM - 9 September, 2012
Yep. SSD's have dropped dramatically. I used to be $2 per GB now it's less than a buck per GB
WarpNote 7:56 PM - 9 September, 2012
Larger sized ones are still quite expensive though.

No mention of 2,5" in this thread since you just brought it up, Im paying attention, but I'm no mind reader ;-) Wasn't aware there was 2tb 2,5" 7200 rpm drives out yet. Would be nice to pop one into the mbp optibay.

I don't get why people buy those small SSDs. Either get a usable size, or stay with a conventional HD or even the hybrid drives IMO.

From $1.00 a MEG to $1.00 a GB?

Yes, I'm hurtin...

I pretty much haven't needed to spend over 100.00 bucks to purchase a new drive for the last 5 years to stay with ample diskspace and technology....

That has come to a halt...
DJJOHNNYM_vSL3 12:05 AM - 10 September, 2012

NAH! Those drugs have worn off...

The one you listed has a 1 YEAR WARRANTY, whereas I actually have the 1 TB versions of the same drives (Seagate) in a "C/D" drive setup on my main machine, but the only difference is that they came with a 3 and 5 year warranty respectively.

I bought and installed those drives in 6/2009, so now's about the time for me to upgrade...

Normally I would just image and keep it movin, but I might as well do a clean install of Win 7 since I have it...currently on XP.

The ones currently listed at NewEgg and Microcenter are still too pricey.

I see one at NewEgg for 150.00 and it has a 3 yr warranty, but that's still too much, since I want to buy 2.

This is some BS.

Experience.

WD's last FOREVER.

And the one time I DID havea problem with a drive dying "prematurely", the warranty process was THE BOMB.

All they needed was the serial number, and BAM, another drive of equal or better value was sent.

They also provide GREAT tools for diganostics and imaging.

I have never had a Seagate die on me. ***Knock on wood***

Hitachi never made it into the lineup.

**Blank Stare at Apple products****

But yeah, I look at the Brand name's of the drives that I'm REMOVING, and how difficult it is to retrieve data from a failed drive, and I'm replacing Hitachi (and other brands) 10x's more than others.

Now that I think of it, I never see WD's just dying here....and that's what we're replacing them with.

Ha, EXTERNAL DRIVES.....

I've only had experience with WD My Books...and interestingly enough, I'm NOT that impressed with them.

None have actually FAILED, but I have had Data Access issues....

I've always been able to retrieve the data, but I understand they "sleep" a lot and subsequently have issues....I've never used one for DJ'ing music from, but for data backup...

The only drive that died on me that I was mad as hell about was a MAXTOR drive, who I think were subsequently taken over by Seagate....

Regardless, I usually replace the drives due to improving technology, Windows needing "reinstallation" (yeah, I know..lol), and the fact that the COST of diskspace was getting cheaper, while the storage was getting exponentially larger over a relatively short span of time.

Since 2009 - a TB @ about 100 bucks should easily equal 3 or 4 TB in 2012 for the same 100 bucks...

That is NOT the case now...

I doubt there will be double capacity drives available in a years time from now. Ie 8TB single 3,5" drives. Believe the "evolution curve" is decreasing when it comes to conventional SATA drives.
Hope it's not, but not to optimistic. Might be different for SSD's though.

But see, they're pushing 120 GB SSD drives like that's something USEFUL.

It's like in the early days of "Electric" cars that go a whopping 20 Miles and 25 MPH "on a single charge"....Hell, you go to Pathmark, and then you have to come right back home to charge up.

I remember getting drive sizes in this order

100GB
200GB
320GB
400GB
500GB
1 TB

Yeah, some weren't double the capacity, but made up for it in buffer cache and technology improvements...

On another note, Dell also put Hitatchi drives in their high end mobile workstations.

That means that WD, Seagate and Toshiba are the only 3 actual drive manufacturers left.
