Change needles to reduce control vinyl hum?

theFly 2:05 AM - 23 March, 2008
I know there isn’t much one can do about the control vinyl hum, but it my ears are hypersensitive to that sound (I have allergies / balance problems so it probably messes with my hearing sensitivities). I even turn the music up and it still seems to pierce through the sound and go right into my eardrum (hurts sometimes).

Has anyone tried switching needles / carts to reduce the hum? I have Shure M44-Gs right now; any needles that give off less sound from the turntable? Oddly, going into 45 RPM mode the sound becomes higher frequency and doesn’t bother me as much as 33 RPM. Thanks

yeah, I figured that would be another option. i might look into noise cancelling since they might be able to reduce the hum well. thanks

I'm not super sensitive to it, but I do seem to hear it more than other people. It's annoying, but then I think about how much it's saving my back compared to a minor annoyance it is to my ears (I doubt it will cause permanent damage to me, at least less than to my back).

Do you switch it to monitor Master when you bring in the new track? I got the Vestax 06 Slim so I can't do that lol..

To clarify, you mean keep the headphones on through the entire set, right (ie don't take them off after cueing / beatmatching)? Maybe split cue might be a good thing to have.

You can use the second line out, no?

Yeah. Just keep them on the entire time. I can do this even without split cue. It takes a while to get used to it, but it can be done. I've done entire mixtapes like this cause I used to live in an apartment and would get the itch to make a mixtape laaaate at night. lol

You can toggle between master and cue on the headphones. I do cue when cueing (obviously) and when it's all set, I would switch it to master and get on with the scratching, mixing, etc.

If i only use my headphones during a gig, I always feel kind of distracted since I´m always listening to the tune which will come ahead.
Unlike the crowd which parties to the tune beeing played right now!
But for mixtapes I agree,
since I´m sharing my apartment and don´t want to harass the people living with me at late night
at least not every night :-)

Yeah but then I'd have to plug it back into the cue every time I wanna cue it up. And they're on opposite sides of the mixer. I can't do it looking at the waveform lol, and I don't wanna get used to it.

Sixxx, how do you do it without the split cue?

I know how to do it when you can switch between master and cue, but not with only cue.

you can get one of these:

kind of cheap looking, but it would work as an aftermarket DIY solution.
