What do you use and what have you used?
Looking at new options. mainly i want something that has great range and is very clear. Any tips on what freq band to get?
I'm currently using a Sennheiser Evolution G2 Super Cardioid. Didn’t have a lot of help when I was getting it, but I got the super cardioid because I wanted the bubble to be smaller to reduce the possibility of feedback. Some of the people I respect a lot said shure is over rated, and Sennheiser has better quality.

Try to get one that does automatic frequency scanning. They are more expensive, but you won't have to worry about static or random cut-outs. I have the Audio-Technica mics, which have 9 selectable channels, but you have to select them manually. Any interference can not be fixed without re-tuning the mic itself.
They were just cheaper at the time!

I've had this mic for years!!! So many years I can't even remember when I bought it. No problems whatsoever.

Any mic should always be a couple hundred feet, with a direct line of sight. Just don't try to transmit through a metal wall...

i always use the shure sm58 with the pgx transmitter. doubles as my guitar wireless system with the instrument body pack. Auto freq scan, and 1 button to sync the mic/body pack with the transmitter. never had any issues.
didn't know line 6 was making mics/wireless systems now... how is it? their guitar/bass gear is awesome.

The spec's say:
Effective Range: 100 m (300 ft.) under optimal conditions (NOTE: Actual working range depends on RF signal absorption, reflection, and interference)
The line 6 one above says 100ft (30m) range.
It is annoying that they often don't list the range so it's easy to find on many models.
I have the EV re-2 handheld and lav sets

I use the Line 6 XD-V70 (new model is the V75). Great Mic, highly recommend it. Also recommend the EV RE-2 Series. You cannot skimp on a wireless microphone - either buy quality or not at all. Also, if you are buying used, make sure the mic does not use the frequencies that have been banned for mic use since last year.

Just be careful about frequency ranges & the frequency distribution in your area.
They are switching off analogue TV signals around the world & re-allocating the frequency spectrum - some mics won't work anymore when that happens.

I've worked with Shure and Sennheiser. I prefer the Sennheiser. granted the two models were at a difference price point.
Sennheiser EW Series
Shure PGX Series
The Sennheiser had many more options. You could adjust the sensitivity on the microphone and the LED display shows you the frequency. (the sennheiser being the more expensive model)
I haven't had a chance to deal with the higher end Shure mic.

My local DJ shop rents these out for $15 per night so I'd have to rent a minimum of 24 times to get my money back. I don't always need a wireless mic for my gigs so I just stick to renting.

i have thought about renting lapel mics for an officient, but every time i say extra $50 they say no thanks... so with that in mind i havent bought one...
My Sennheiser/super cardioid has been great. funny story from wednesday. The judge said something and then right after i hear a BAM!
my mic is solid enough to use as a weapon and the poor ring barer got slammed in the head as the judge was putting his arm back to his side...

I've used a Samson Stage 5H for a few years now with no problems.
Surprisingly excellent range and audio quality, especially granted the price point (It lists with an MSRP of just under $120, but can usually be found at retail for around $70-80).

Thats what i had heard too.
Question on range though... Before you buy a mic and plug it in, what can you do to get an appx range?

PGX series is a great mic. Back at my old job we rented these out day in and day out. Very reliable, good sound, plenty of channels. Probably the best in its price range.
Just make sure you understand the difference between a 58 and 58A. The 58A has a much narrower "sweet spot", or supercardioid pickup pattern. This is fine if you are the only one using it, but if this mic is for people to do speeches at weddings and such, chances are they won't hold the mic properly. The narrower sweet spot combined with poor mic technique wil make for bad sound, the volume fluctuating up and down.

+1 some people think if the mic is on and in their hand that all of a sudden it works for everyone. Had a father of the bride reading something and he held it in his hand with the papers, (not pointing toward his mouth) he kept trying to listen for his voice and turning to me and giving me dirty looks because it wasnt picking his up very well. after he said that i need better equipment. My response was I hadn't had any problems that night, and no one else seemed to have issues hearing me or anyone else that used it. So if he wants me to show him how to use it again, I would be glad to assist him.

lol exactly. Spend the extra cash and you get blamed for having bad gear.
Sound guys love the beta58A because it's better at preventing feedback.

The beta 87 is also a great mic. It's a condenser, so very sensitive, kind of like a studio mic. It is available in a number of pickup patterns as well. For this mic, however, you may need a 31-band EQ and some experience eliminating feedback frequencies.

Yeah, PG24/PG58 Wireless Vocal System is the one I currently use.
Its the budget series of the Shure range but for them budget does not mean compromising on quality.

I have had the XD-V70 for about 6 months now. Sounds great, no issues with it at all. I would recommend it. Got mine deeply discounted just as the new model was coming out. The new XD-V75 has USB port for updating firmware but you can still update the V70 with a borrowed base from a V75. Other than that they are mostly the same so pick up the V70 if you can find one.

This dude in town bought this about a month ago. He calls me the other day wanting to rent my mics because his (Gemsound) picks up too much static and does not have range further than 10 feet. I loaned him mine, but gave him a good lesson in quality as well.
