well, this has gone over better than I expected so far.

iTunes
& Juno

Plus records store dollar bins are what I would reccomend. Charity shops.

Have fun digging in the funk & disco section because you will find many a hidden gem. Plus fuckloads of oh shit thats where they took that from moments!

Good times

OR
go to whosampled.com
type in favorite old school hip hop song
see what songs it sampled
click on many more tunes making list of tunes

Then
go to said sites and download tunes legally

I'm an old retired disco dj. For young curious djs I suggest the following funky playlist :
1) Commodores – the bump
2) Stargard – high on the boogie
3) Edwin Birdsong – rapper dapper snapper (vocal)
4) Equals – funky like a train
5) Aretha Franklyn – rock steady (sure is pure dub mix)
6) Kool & The Gang – spirit of the boogie
7) Free Expression – chill out
8) Deodato – keep on movin’
9) Uncle Louie – I like funky music
10) Bella Epoque – miss Broadway
11) Fatback Band – yum yum
12) K C & The Sunshine Band – do it good
13) Roundtree – get on up to get on down
14) Johnson Products – Johnson jumpin’
15) John Gibbs And The U.S. Steel Band – j’ouvert
16) Ashantis – everybody’s groove
17) Jesse Green – nice and slow
18) Rhythm Makers – zone
19) Cleveland Eaton – Chi-town theme
20) Jimmy Castor Bunch – don’t do that
21) Sweet – funk it up
22) Plunky & The Oneness of Ju Ju – every way but loose

& isn't it ironic that disco was shunned for being brainless cokehead music (well some of it was)?

To the OP. Best thing to do is find it on vinyl. On the Internet, you're at the mercy of what someone else has already found and uploaded. If you go to a record store or thrift store and dig, you'll have more satisfying finds.

discogs.com is another place to get vinyl

Old School Hip-Hop, Funk etc is the only type of music that you can still have classic/rare tracks that make other DJ's ask what they are...anyone and their dog knows 99 percent of the music played by commercial club DJ's these days so its nice to have a shedload of classic and rare tracks, wether on vinyl or mp3. I would suggest, instead of taking random lists off people on Serato, dig a bit. Wether its in a record store or online. You will probably find a load that appeals to you that might not appeal to other DJ's. Ill give you ONE....The Skull Snaps :-)

Don't forget Classic House is another genre that will get other DJs asking what they are as well.

+1
Took me FOREVER to get even the main cuts on vinyl back in the day. Had to settle for some re-issues for a lot of them.
jmlbrns45 6:50 PM - 20 September, 2012
plus there is so many versions of those tracks that you'd have to listen to each one to figure out the one that is played on the radio
