Serato Video General Discussion

Talk about Serato Video and Video-SL.

It's great and all that Mix Emergency is out for 2.4 now but...

Justin Styles 4:14 PM - 17 July, 2012
All these people thanking the two companies for coming together is a bit ridiculous. Was there any mention of a partnership between the two? I didn't see any mention of it anywhere.

This being the case, here's what it looks like from my perspective.

1. Serato creates Serato Video, not to screw over ME users but to optimize their own product and make it better because it needed a rewrite.
2. ME users scream, cry, throw toys out of their stroller, petition about how Serato is the DEVIL.
3. Serato posts saying the door is open and they'll work with Inklen but Inklen hasn't taken that step.
4. Behind the scenes, Inklen knows they figured out how to read SSL's memory once, they can do it again. Why pay for licensing? Look at the press ME is getting.
5. ME releases a version of 2.4 and everyone thanks both, the video community is happy once again.

Sure it sounds a bit conspiracy theoryish but based on what I've seen it's pretty accurate. Also this is taking into the fact that I've heard there's stuff that wasn't public, but someone should clear this up.

As far as I can tell, the video community is full of whiners that cry and don't understand software licensing. Please try to understand software licensing if something like this happens in the future.

Just to clarify before someone calls me a Serato leg humper, I'm an ME user myself and a software developer. While it sucks ME wasn't usable, this notion that Serato intentionally broke ME is pure idiocy.

Who gives a shit? It didn't work. We complained. It works now. I don't care how or why it happened, I'm just happy with the results.

What I'm saying is there is no evidence that your complaining (and the petition for that matter) didn't have any positive impact on anything. Inklen was obviously working on 2.4 compatibility because it's their flagship product. Unless they announce they helped each other out, all the crying was for nothing and pointless. If you think you had any impact on it, you're lying to yourself.
DJ Deano 5:00 PM - 17 July, 2012
End of the day, nobody knows what went on apart from Nick At Inklen, and whoever at serato.

They know what went on, and we all know now that it works, time to move on and stop going on about what came first the chicken or the egg.

Again, don't give a shit. If it did. GREAT. If it didn't, I don't care because it works now. I didn't start the petition, I signed it, took 5 seconds.

There is evidence that the petition did something. It got a direct response from the main guy at Serato.

And you know that for fact?
Did the petition actually make a difference?

How do you know that once again Inklen and Serato were not in talks well before this even started?

Maybe it was all a ploy to get us kicking and screaming, making a fuss to create attention for all partys?

Like i say the only people who know are serato and inklen, and frankly i don't care. Its working, and it opens it up to more possibilities in future.

paying for licensing probably would make it officially supported. so far, it's still not officially supported. maybe there are some NZ laws that both parties are trying to avoid by keeping it unofficial.

but it was stated from a serato staff (can't remember who) that nick dropped by their offices the other day and everything got straightened out.

who knows if it was literal or just a figure of speech, but things seem to be back to "normal" once again and everyone is happy.

Hey everyone,

We've been in discussions with Nick from Inklen for a while now, and recently he stopped by the office so we could resolve the issue of Scratch Live and MixEmergency no longer working together. The outcome is that Serato still does not officially support MixEmergency, however we are happy for Inklen to get it working again with the newer versions of Scratch Live. Serato and Inklen will remain in close contact to ensure that should any more issues arise, we can quickly resolve them.

Inklen will announce separately the timeline for their next release, which will support the newer versions of Scratch Live and the new Rane mixers.

We know this will make a lot of our mutual customers happy, and look forward to moving forward with new releases of Scratch Live and MixEmergency

I think the point that Justin is addressing is that a bunch of you like Steve Dub are really the lowest common denominator and a major annoyance for the rest of us who have some grasp of reality. The attitude of "I don't care how as long as it works" for these types of issues is really as dumb as it gets since a lot of unnecessary chaos is created along the way. If you're going to complain, at least have an idea of what you're complaining about. There's a difference between venting frustration and soap boxing based on nothing more than assumption.

I'm ashamed at the way you guys trashed the team at Serato when they released 2.4. As a software developer myself, it's very frustrating dealing with that type of user base who is completely unwilling to be reasonable on any level and scream "me me me" regardless of the reasoning. I commend Serato for dealing with this in a very reasonable way.

So as a software developer, you've never looked at old code and wanted to rewrite it? Serato Video was that rewrite. The clientele that were "alienated" were using an unofficial addon of the product. I'd be willing to wager that the # of ME users vs others (video-sl/video and audio) is a very small portion. In Minneapolis I know of 3-4 other djs actually using video, only one of them uses ME. The ME userbase in fact is probably less than 2% of scratch live users.

On the flip side, thanks to LJ_WOOLSEY for posting earlier. My whole point of this post was to hope that people would realize that the majority of the ME complaints were baseless. Yes it sucks that it wasn't usable, but it was obvious something new was in the works. The crazy people slamming Serato is what really got to me.
