Cleaning dusty needles on the fly...

thulsadoom 9:39 PM - 30 January, 2008
Man oh man do my record needles pick up of dust. I was wondering what all you dj's do about cleaning your needles on the fly. I've seen people lick their finger tips and scrape the needles with their finger. Is there a proper way to do this without damaging your needles? Thanks.

i use a small metall-brush from the world famous "dremel". it works perfekt -> nycs-finest.de

UR SHTTIN' ME?!

And how many needles do you go through?

Use a small fine art brush, but not metal!

BTW, I wouldn't touch my needles with a metal brush either. The needle and the thing where its connected to the coil is quite sensitive.

Hell no, this is for real. I have no problems i use my turntables every day and i need one or two pairs needles a year...
DJTJ 12:26 AM - 1 February, 2008
fingers. Been doing it for years and never damaged a needle yet... Now that I said that watch me go out friday and bust one lol
grotesque 3:35 AM - 1 February, 2008
it's not about damaging the needles though. everytime you wipe you finger over the needle you leave grease that means it picks up dust quicker and grinds more crap into the grooves of your cv.
DJ Smooth B. 12:28 PM - 1 February, 2008
yup, and with your fingers you can't get away the grease from the stylus. you need a brush to do this
thulsadoom 8:48 PM - 1 February, 2008
appreciate it fellas. thank you

I clean my dusty needles on the fly by licking the needles.. or if I am in the middle of a mix just drop a small drop of water in front of the needle.. "These are both old skool tricks but it works...
midihendrix 8:28 PM - 2 February, 2008
I'm not really concerned with taking care of my cv. I never have time to use a brush, so i just gently use my finger.

p.s. shure m44-7 needles are wack. just felt like saying that.
JEM 357 6:37 PM - 5 February, 2008
i use the filter end of a cigarette, lightly wipe and rotate on the stylus, works a treat. If you dont smoke, learn, its really cool.

When i was first learning i got yelled at and kicked off the decks for grabbing dust off with my finger for this reason. lol...

now i do the yelling hahaha.

When you buy alot of carts they come with brushes, they rock. Dont lose them, if its all black, make sure to take whiteout to the handle so you can see it in the club,

i once told a dude that it was a bad idea to clean his needles like that. he then proceeded to rip the stylus out of his 447s trying to prove the point that i was being <no homo>anal<no homo> about it. he then got shat cause i wouldn't lend him my needles.

who goes to a gig with just two needles??? or no backup stylus??
grotesque 3:35 AM - 14 February, 2008
um... well the same guy used to turn up without headphones every second week. total f**ktard. i just don't get how you could go to work without headphones! i ended up leaving a broken set in there so that he didn't get all angry when i said no to him borrowing mine.

he also used to turn up drunk all the time.

i hate lending my gear. even to mates.

use contact cleaner that leaves no residue and spray the whole needle/headshell end to end, spray mostly stylus, cleaning/loosing buildup on neddle/stylus point. I take a sewing needle and have to pick the buildup off my stylus with the Magnafinging glass "BE CAREFULL NOT TO DAMAGE NEEDLE BY PRESSING TO HARD"..it will look like new...If u get buildup on end contact of headshell rub the four contact points on your clean bluejeans for a sure connection "NEVER LICK YOUR CONTACTS OR USE SPIT"
"record needle in basiclly a HI-FI microphone"
active serato djz using control records or using the same records over and over are gona see buildup the most! our hands are nasty on records "dead skin/dirt/sweaty body acid oils" ..clean all ur records often with proper care! I am using stanton 500ALII on a set, using shure M44G with serato set, using a ortafon nightclub and a trackmasterII on another set. Install the shure M44-7 stylus in the M44G cart for the best results! But u have to kock the cart at a 20 degree angle to line it up with the tonearm base for best tracking' contact me and I can tell ya where to get the shure on the low low price online. and guitar center will love to match the price just for the bussiness.I dont work there just passing on the deals!

If ur gona use headshells use shure M44-G with N44-7 stylus installed correctly will track 100%!
IF ur gona use plug-in carts or have no light use the ortafon nightclub, there worth every dime.

most djz spining recordz have no idea how to correctly install carts or correctly balance tonearms, most dont think about levelness of turntable"the four feet adjust" and the height on tonearm base adjusts. TURNTABLE/NEDDLE CARE CARE CARE!!
If your using anything other than the 1200/1210mk's thats ur problem.

have fun and never set down the tonearm!

Stanton 505v4 track real well with serato........ so don't be wasting money on crazy carts if your not playing real vinyl..... yeah you got cock em back towards the outside of the plater for best results....... anything other than 1200's is unacceptable.....

There are both brushes and gel solutions for this... The cheapest and easiest to bring on the go being a stylus brush. You should be able to pick up a few key points here. :)
