This topic came up in a Facebook group for Seattle DJs. The initial reaction from a few was "why hate, you/me/we aren't getting that caliber of gig anyway." What people fail to realize is that somebody like Paris just "deciding" to jump into the scene at the top level does NOT only affect those on a Skam Artist roster. Here's a hypothetical that I broke down for them to illustrate my point, using Seattle (or ex-Seattle DJs).

Let's say DJ Scene got booked for Lollapalooza on the bottom of the bill.

He takes the gig and brings up DJ Niros from Seattle to cover his Vegas gigs that weekend, as Niros has played Vegas and would be a great fit to cover.

Niros takes the gigs in Vegas, and passes his Seattle gigs that weekend to DJ Puma.

DJ Puma then passes on his gigs to me or another friend, whoever is open.

In this scenario, Scene, Niros, Puma, and I would ALL have been jumping "up a level" that weekend and playing spots bigger and better than what we had otherwise planned or been booked for - all due to the one original booking that Scene got.

Now let's say Paris Hilton's people weasel with the promotions crew and get her on for Lollapalooza - but doing so knocks Scene off of the bill. Now 4 different DJs have all had their hopes and dreams shit on for that weekend, just so this reality show whore can feel important by standing behind turntables. Because she said she wanted to. Even though Scene is clearly the one between the two of them that would deliver a better set to the crowd.

Do you REALLY think people like Paris Hilton are bringing up deserving DJs underneath them? Getting locals that they have worked with some more shine (like most of us do when we can)? I seriously think not. This kind of shit puts holes in the fabric of our community. It's about more than just one chick getting a prime booking, when you really look at the trickle-down effects...

Our, once respected, profession is now a joke. The way I see it, we can go one of two ways. We can take the same route that Bboying took...the fad can die out and the real DJs who have a passion for the profession will come out the other end still doing their thing and keep on pushin, respected for their craft once again. OR we can go the way of rap music and end up a sad parody of what the profession was all about in the past. I'm afraid we are leaning toward the latter.

Whoa!!!! We where respected at one time? I have been doing this nearly 10 year, 7 years professionally, and never once have been respected by other musician's (at my local level), random people on the streets, or hell even by clients. Too most people we are hired juke boxes.

Now thats a real big generalization, Yes i have fans and people who respect me in my scene. But outside the EDM scene nobody tells you how respected you are.

DJing and playing an instrument are or two different levels. I see people ooh and aah over my turntables, but I can't play a musical instrument to save my life. I guess the respect has to go both ways. Throw composing into the mix and now there is a happy middle for DJs and musicians. I've DJed with bands before to a couple different types of crowds. The band gets most of its recognition for individual songs, while the DJ gets his/her props for the whole set. Again, two different playing fields.

I'm not sure what Paris Hilton has to offer, if anything, but we do deserve props for our craft. I don't claim to be a musician, but I am good at what I do - DJ!

Me too, but i still don't feel respected in the music industry, because i don't produce my own tracks.

+1

Tonight I killed it (more that i usually do) and if gave me a big convinced boost. Plus the pact that i opened for Afrojack the night before didn't hurt my my confidence level.
Taipanic 3:27 PM - 20 May, 2012
Respected? Really? Outside of some drunk fans at the club and a few DJs that aren't trying to backstab you, there is not much, and has never been, much respect for this profession. Most club owners still pay what club owners were paying over 20 years ago. Put your DJ experience on a resume for a job outside of this business and see how much respect it gets. Tell the Judge in your child custody hearing that you DJ in clubs for a living, see who wins that case... The sad truth is that outside of ourselves and people who are really into music, there is just not that much respect...
Do good DJ's deserve respect? Of course, but most people just don't get what a good DJ really does - including most club owners.

I wasn't gonna say anything but she did look a little sexy twisting those knobs in the beginning of that vid. I am used to looking at old soulful House music guys twisting knobs (think DJ A-Train - ewww) - not the same.

She still sucks and I'd rather look at Beyonce's curves or Nicki Minaj's Phat Ass all day long, but she did that little snake knob twist...

afrojack is actually a pretty good dj. i seen him at EDC, and his earlier set was really on point. played a bunch of good club/party tracks in succession with the dance floor. he even mixed acapella to instrumental. i could tell it was live. unless it was another dj, afrojack was pretty nuce on the 1s and 2s.

II can understand why she wants to dj but you got to crawl before you can walk. I sucked when I first started but I cut my teeth doing house parties, weddings, bar nights etc. I eventually got better with experience. I don't think it's a good idea to have your first gig be at a major festival. Man that was hard to watch. I feel kinda bad for her. Although I did a Nye party a couPle years back and she gave me a request list of like 12 songs and was demanding them all, now she ca. Play her own cheesy songs herself. I literally was like naw when I heard the flanger.

Paris should leave the djing to us. It's not like I wake up and decide I want to be an heiress; she needs to wake up.

What's the difference between Paris and some of these other "top DJs" who get paid $400k to show up and mash play?

Actually, I say PROPS to Paris Hilton for showing us that most of the so-called "top DJs in the world" are scam artists who mash play on premixed sets.

Paris Hilton is seriously misunderstood. She's like a forum troll, except instead of sitting in her mom's house in her underwear trolling pointless internet forums that few people care about, she trolls out in the real world. She's in it for nothing but the lulz, and by being all butthurt, you're adding to the lulz.

No, the only thing you can do now is get behind her and say

FUCKING GO, PARIS!
DJ Dynamite - NJ 6:29 PM - 29 June, 2012
what are you talking about? she's in it for the lulz? She's in it to make money. Obviously you have no passion for this or you would see why some of us are pissed about celebrities making a mockery of something that we are passionate about.

What in the hell? She's Conrad Hilton's great-granddaughter, and so wealthy that even she would have a hard time bankrupting her parents even if all she did was set fire to 100 dollar bills.

It isn't the celebrities making the mockery. I don't want to name any names specifically, because I post under my real name here, but look at the list of the top 20 DJs, and you'll find at least 15 who are making just as much a mockery of it as Paris Hilton.

That's what I'm talking about--maybe with Paris on the decks people might finally start to ask some questions. If not? Well, we were screwed anyway.

Well, gosh, I wonder how we dealt with this 15 years ago?

Oh yeah, the producers were all actual DJs. Probably because back then producing a track took technical skill with patch cables and buttons and knobs and shit, and inspiration for new material required active participation in a local music scene.

Now you just watch crap on YouTube, say "I can do that", buy (lol) Ableton, cut some crap, convince some recording industry knucklehead that you're the next Madonna, next thing you know you're mashing play in a stadium to zillions of screeching idiots.

Barron didn't donate all that crap until 2007. Paris had plenty of time to burn 100s before that, and use her family's name to set up sinecures netting her a PERSONAL net worth of $100M.

It's not about the money. It's yet another form of celebutante self-expression, which is really all the top tier of DJing has been about for ten freaking years.
Joshua Carl 8:37 PM - 29 June, 2012
she is doing it because, if their is anything we've learned in the past decade, its for attention.

she could have not greenlight the sex tape.
she obviously has no need for the $$$ from it....
she is a celeb by money, not any particular talent... other than being a professional celebrity
(I dont count the BS shows/movies she's done making her an "actress"... nor the songs she has
recorded make her a artist

so, now fastfoward to when DJ'ing is laughably easy at its most basic level
(mixing 1 song to the next...even though afrojack says it WAS a premixed cd)
now she gets to do whats she has watching people in clubs do, and once again be the
center of attention.

we all know there are DJs in the game THAT HAVE ZERO INTEREST IN MONEY.
they are called undercutters.... they work for free and such
and alot are only DJing for the status of "being the DJ"... so now, becuase she has disposable
income, she can enlist tons of media, promotions, stage show, ect ect ect.
things your average unexperienced DJ could never bring to the table.
and like alot (not all) women who are "professional celebrities" their job is to be the
center of attention all the time. as soon as they are irrelevent they are done in the public view.
and they cant have that.... whats the point of all that money, if you cant be famous!

I will say she is a scene veteran for lack of better terms.
not that she is tech saavy, and a trainspotter and such.
but she has always been going out, in clubs and big events seemingly forever.
Its not like she went from 10 years of being in the indie rock scene and decided to try EDM
and there we have it...

I do like the idea brough up, that if she is exposed to John Q Public people might be a lil quicker
to expose locals who are doing the same thing,

That's the thing, she's kinda been dumping a lot of money at DJs over the years with all her ballin' VIP ways. I mean, how do you think anyone gets paid tens of thousands of dollars to spin at a nightclub?

Haha, so maybe this is just an aggressive strain of "pay to play," really.

You obviously don't get many bookings with DJs that earn at that dollar level. Other than celebs, I can't think of one I've ever played alongside in 14 years that has ever "just shown up and pressed play." Any non celeb that even thinks of doing that who isn't a celeb gets PUT ON BLAST. The game is entirely too competitive for DJs to let It happen in general.

And if you're referring to DJs that use auto-sync and make that much - top notch production takes far more skill than beat matching. We need their production skills and contribution to the scene much more than we need another dj that can beat match.

Paris Hilton is a joke.

Producers need to stick to the studio instead of coming into the dj lane.

DJs do what djs do.

And for the guy that said music production is much harder than beatmatching….

Do you produce? Out of all the popular crap right now, there is no production quality to it. With technology now you can make amazing stuff on the fly. But to someone who knows how to do the same thing, it's not that impressive. You might be able to do amazing things on the tables and to the average person it's amazing. But someone who can do the same thing is far from impressed.

Look at DJs like Jazzy Jeff, Mixmaster Mike, Qbert, Ztrip, Craze, and any other dj that performs globally….you telling me that music production is more difficult and requires more skill than that?

You telling me that playing 30 songs ALL THE SAME BPM AND PATTERN is even considered djing? How about making 30 songs with the same patterns, bpm, and no words. How difficult is that?

You got assholes like Guetta faking the funk on simple ass music. They are producers so that is what they should stick too. As if they aren't getting enough money….they need the extra $30k a show to jump around and play their own music.

EDM music and the djs spawned from it are a flippin fad. History repeats itself and when this is all gone again, those crap djs and dime producers will fall to their rightful places.

Oh really, go ahead an elaborate. I have 2 degrees in music and this is how I make a living. So feel free to call me a moron but the facts still remain.

EDM music is the "hot trend" right now and that's why all this whack djs popped up.

DJs and produces should stay in their own lanes.

Production and DJing both take talent. If these mainstream jokes where making it all live then it would be a different story. Throwing in 4 CDs all at 130bpm and prearranged is not djing. Hell you don't even have to read the crowd, just play what you created.

But to equate djing to producing is like comparing a Toyota to an orange. They belong in different categories and that's how they should remain.

I personally don't like EDM music. Mainly because it sounds pretty much the same. I know there is a difference between mainstream and underground. But when the front man is Guetta and Tiesto, who's music is all the same crap…. I don't see the difficulty in it.

You make the music live using your actual production tools. Ableton, MPC, midi controllers, whatever. There are plenty talented producers and groups that actually do that.

Question is: For a producer who makes bookoo money off productions, why would you even want to go out and act like a dj? Might as well just put a mix on and just dance….oh wait

You got assholes like Guetta faking the funk on simple ass music. They are producers so that is what they should stick too. As if they aren't getting enough money….they need the extra $30k a show to jump around and play their own music.

Actually sir... Guetta has been a DJ long before he became a producer. And as a matter of fact, he's a pretty dope one too. He didn't just blow up over night, he's been doing this since the early 90's, if not, the late 80's. When a DJ get's to Guetta's super star status, your entire game changes. There's too many stakes and too much production to put at risk.

Like it or not, that's how you play this game. It's the same reason why rappers always rap the same shit when they're on tour. But whenever they have smaller shows or "just for the fuck of it" events they go all out and start freestyling. That's when they truly shine. Same with Guetta.

If Paris Hilton and Pauly D did a tour together....
Can you imagine the sort of people that would show up to watch?

And would they do a marathon set at mansion because the management there would NEVER ask either of those two to get off the turntables (or in Paris's case, the microphone while she dances)

All I see is signs, all I see is dollar signs! They'd be stupid not to do it.

fuck that.

The Rolling Stones don't mime their instruments when they tour - they practice and play a tight set and get paid to do it.

It's just that most people don't actually know what a DJ is doing up there so people let them get away with it.

At least when milli vanilli got busted in the 90s, they were crucified and it effectively ended their career. No one cares anymore which is sad...

a) were the rolling stones really playing in this video? Watchwww.youtube.com

Acutually id be interested to know if they were really playing live here Watchwww.youtube.com usually live tv dont play about these kinda things

B) its fundamentally different because in that case each person is responsible for an instrument so it makes sense to play each instrument live as was performed on the album also watching someone get down on a guitar or live drum is visually interesting to watch whereas in the kinda music guetta does it wouldnt really make sense because he would be responsible for all instruments and it wouldnt really be interesting to watch him on stage sitting in a desk daisy chaining fx racks lol

C) look at your own personal situation, you just made a pretty cool end of the world track for friday right....are you going to construct it live at your gig? No your just gonna load it play i and move on

The times I've seen Guetta live he's always played. The times I've seen him "DJ" on TV, obviously he wasn't playing. That's TV and they only get what? 5 Minutes at most? Most TV DJ performances aren't live. We all know that. It's TV.

sell out or not.
his crowds today are only mildy bigger than Paris Hilton's.

so, he's run the gammit, from DJ, to producer, to sellout dj, to sellout producer
(not saying sell out in a derogatory manner... just he is a hired gun now for top 40 artists to legitimize their dance music to the sheepish varient of the EDM crowd)

so someone with 20 years and top shelf production ability is getting the same reaction and money as someone with a sextape, and is widely known for being as dumb as...well, as dumb as Paris Hilton...
if ANYTHING comes of this, i hope it DESTROYS the current state of the DJ.
(the public will HAVE TO put 2+2 together wont they>? am i giving them too much credit? i hope it brings it down to rubble so once again the phoenix may rise from the ashes and return the torch to the hardworking, passionate, talented career DJs.

L+T: Lastly, the question I end all of my conversations with when I speak to a DJ or producer is the following: Do you think a DJ is a musician?AF: Traditionally, DJing was about performance, wasn’t it? When you go back to performing on turntables, there were two types of DJs. There was one with skills and it was all about how they cut up records and performs visually, excite the crowd. Then, there was the selector which was more about the tunes that they played and the order that they played them in and the journey you took someone on. So, you had the hip hop skills world and then you got the flow where the DJ was taking you on a journey throughout a couple of hours with music. They both are a talent. Then, of course, you’ve got the new school bunch of DJs nowadays. When I first started DJing, if there were twenty DJs on the set and I was playing, nineteen of them were actual DJs that didn’t make music. Nowadays, there’s a lot of DJs, especially in the electronic world, that are artist first and foremost, and they DJ as well. I think it’s influenced how they make music. I think the way they make music is more conscious because they are aware with what happens when someone deejays with a tune, which has both good and bad sides. When I first started making music, I didn’t think that if a track had a two minute string intro that it would be a problem for a DJ to format into his set. It was freer in the way the music was made. I think there’s a certain amount of creative skill that’s musically involved in deejaying.

I have been doing this nearly 10 year, 7 years professionally, and never once have been respected by other musician's
Really?, it's been my experience that people who play an instrument respect what i do FAR more than rappers or other people even though turntablism developed out of hip hop

Hell, as a session musician in Vegas, I used to not respect DJs until I became one...then I quickly realized how challenging it is to be a GOOD DJ!

Fuckin sheep fell for it again, you have been talking about this "DJ Performance" for a month now. It has nothing to do with DJing and everything to do with her being all over the Indian newspapers to promote her new Indian stores opening up.
