Is it worth investing in an SSD

Hi Guys,

I'm just wondering if apart from loading songs quicker, will there be any benefit into having an SSD? My macbook pro is a late 2008 2.2gh core 2 duo which is limited to 4gb ram, of course I can upgrade the hard drive and a 256 would be ample space for me. At almost around £1 a gig, will I see any benefits?

Cheers

all you will see is faster load times on the OS and Scratchlive. Bear in mind that SSD drives are known to fail also. if you choose SSD or spinning hard drive or hybrid. Also back up your drive.

As I thought, not really worth the bang for the buck. Thanks Victor.

I was going to look at going for the Seagate Hybride but wanted to carbon copy my HD to it and wasn't sure how the mac would cope

my philosophy is. if your installing a new drive start from scratch. If something is crashing you can at least eliminate the OS as being the culprit.

for a laptop, the price point just isn't low enough to justify the cost.

yes you get faster boot up and faster app startup but those don't translate into real-world performance increases. you will not see/feel a difference using serato with or without an SSD.

for other uses such as video encoding, 2k/4k video playback, etc is where you will see performance gains.

for example a 1TB HDD is about $0.12 per gb even with the current HDD shortage. a 128GB ssd is about $1.17 per gb.

i have (2) 128GB SSD's in my desktop, but for all my laptops i'm sticking with HDD's for now.

in my home studio machine I ran a single OCZ SSD that failed after 7 months... they replaced it under warranty..replacement failed in 9 months... replaced it again with the latest model that's running in the machine right now....
I'm building the new machine and switching to 3 Velociraptors at RAID 5.

you have to be really careful when selecting the SSD to make sure it's bootable...some SSD's aren't bootable... and in my opinion..why spend $ on a SSD if you're NOT gonna boot from it?
the whole point is to gain speed with the OS.

If you're on a Mac, just use an external drive with firewire 800.. that's what I do with my music and crates and it's perfectly fine...instant mount and pulls the music just fine... even firewire 400 is fine..

if you'll be using a SSD, just make sure that you don't turn on compression or file indexing on... it cuts the drive's lifespan dramatically

Im in ultra Geek Mode today.

The company who i use for data recovery now says they can recover dead SSD's as well.
