Optimizing Mac OS X Panther for Audio Apps

depakote 5:34 AM - 31 August, 2004
I know Stuart brought up some links on this subject but I really couldn't get much info from them. I have also googled it and didn't have much luck. Does anyone know where I can find some info? Thanks!

the latest issue of (i think) electronic musician goes into detail about optizmizing panther and jaguar.

It was actually an article writing last september. I found out about it with the link stuart gave to a forum. It isn't on Electronic Musicians site anymore however.

If you're a bit of a "poindexter" and want to go all the way with optimizing your MAC, this book looks like the shizztnitz.

I'm thinking about getting it.. has anyone else used it.

Yes, I suppose the multimedia section may help.

I'm also interested in this...

I'm not sure now that this book would help that much. I checked it out at the shop and it seems like more of a "get the most out you MAC" book, meaning push it to the limit.

I'm more after a "streamlining and speeding up performance of your MAC" book.

i think FUTUREMUSIC and MUSICTECH both did a article on optimizing OSX for audio. One thing they noted is to optimize your computer before you begin installing software or it will be more work trying to do so.

SpinThis! is right, it is in the current issue of Electronic Musician Magazine. I just saw it on their web site. Go to go pick it up!

Try not to breach copyright. Paraphrasing is fine.

from what i gleaned from the article:

1) format your drive and install the OS from scratch; only install the languages you use to prevent bloat; this probably the biggest thing you can do--basically start your system from scratch.

2) use disk utility to correct permissions on apps periodically to prevent weird permissions problems. use cocktail or other apps to make sure maitenence on your mac gets done.

3) use a different user account for other tasks. for example for e-mail or dtp you want to be able to have a fairly comprehensive system (such as lots of fonts, etc); in your audio/processor hungry account, you'd want to keep those items to a minimum.

4) process wizard/nicer apps can change multitasking priority settings and kill apps you don't need running to give your processor-hungry apps more priority over other processes.

5) diabloltin is a system preference pane you can use to change various preference settings such as enabling/disabling certain extensions and fonts.

a cool little app to remove unnecessary languages is 'Delocalizer' www.bombich.com
Fire it up, select all and then deselect the languages you want to keep and then hit clean. You'll save about 400MB if you've never done it before and have all the languages installed. Maybe more if you have a lot of multilingual apps (the adobe stuff especially)...
