Cause you don't have to speak the "scratch language" to understand his cuts. I can scratch a little, but I never got into the whole scratch sentence/combo movement. I'm a believer in "less is more." Jeff gives us that.

Innovation and impact!!! It's like Dr. J and Michael Jordan...They would get ate up by a lot of these new stars in the NBA today. They are still considered one of the greatest if not the greatest because they changed the game buy bringing new things to the game to force people to think outside the box. Jazzy Jeff did that to a point...he brought the early years of turntabilism to the public and made it so understandable that white upperclass america would be left talking about what they saw that DJ of the guy who made that song "Parents Just Don't Understand" did onstage. If you listen to alot of these turntablist who ya'll seem to put above Jeff they all say the samething when asked...so who inspired you... Jazzy Jeff!

I like jeff, because of what the other users said... less is more. He makes you want to power on your setup and replicate the whole thing.
I've never seen him live, but have watched dozens of videos. Even when he's just playing out to a club, he rocks it!

he is one of my favourite djs because live i've never seen anyone rock it better. dj z-trip came very VERY close.. on par i'd say but his set was is a different style .. the party i am thinking of jazzy jeff was still using vinyl and he just threw down break after break after classic hip hop tune intro to the next - teasing songs and dropping another instead. nice confident cuts and juggles.. sh*t was ill.. :)

Jeff doesn't really do the mashup thing either. He might have an exclusive remix (which may or may not had been on vinyl), but I like the fact that the songs he uses are the originals.

Lets keep this tread going, all the haters u welcome to ya opinions..... But clearly state why u think another DJ is better. Was Jeff the first marketable DJ to use SSL, Cuz he kills it every time. Who really does mash up besides West coast DJ's. Does anybody really think Q-Bert can rock a club better then Jazzy Jeff. I think it's his song selection. I Heard him play house in vegas, thru we off cuz he didn't cut and scratch like usual

I knew sixxx was out there.... Do U mash up sixxx when u play, I mean who really does that, the most mash up i do if i play Encore by Jay-Z & Linkin Park.
I mean I never heard Jeff play Reggae, I really never heard a real good hip hop DJ rock reggae, thats a bummer cuz I can go from Reggae to Hip Hop with ease. Most DJ's can't play Reggae or they play old wack stuff.
Can Q-bert or Jazzy Jeff play reggae.... Can DJ Am play Reggae with out Bomb drops and silly effects.

A lot of people like Jazzy Jeff (me included) because he's the DJ's DJ. He plays good shit all the time, and he keeps the vibe up. Plus he doesn't seem to dissappoint you like a lot of famous djs do. AM is on the same vibe. They both have their OWN styles. While others are dope.. most seem to just copy styles and stuff. I don't know what it is about Jazzy Jeff but I'm always down to go becuase I know the music is going to be on point and the party is going to be good too.

yes and no. Uneasy listening was the truth. But AM just molded for the masses, plus his style is a bit different. Ztrip and P stick to their guns about what they think is good music, they don't play party breaks, and talk shit about mainstream music to their audience (which is sick! since can). Plus AM's transitions are different to a point too. You can't let mainstream crap cloud your judgment about how good DJs are. This happens a lot with EDM djs too. Etc. Etc. But this is a thread about Jazzy Jeff. I just used AM as an example here becuase most of the peeps on here don't know any other djs.

Dj P plays party breaks... I have proof on an 8mm video tape... he plays mainstream hip hop... ztrip did a show in dallas, played my humps, david banner "play", "golddigger", "crazy in love"... Dj P has to play mainstream stuff at moon.... so again... everyone takes from someone else's style, you just add your own flavor to it.... but doesn't really make it YOUR style.

As a house guy with no real knowledge of hip hop, those videos with Jazzy Jeff and Q bert are interesting. Q bert is totally amazing but it's chin scratching muso stuff. Jeff's tempo is freakin flawless and that what always drives me crazy about a lot of scratch DJs: their tempo is all over the place, usually late. Jeff is on beat and actually driving the beat. I'm going to have to check him out next time he's in town.

I was just making a simple point that the mashup scene isn't exclusive to just the west coast, it's just more publicized because of Hollywood and the celebs out there clubbing.
I just get tired of the whole East Coast vs West Coast vs South DJ's... "this DJ is better because he's from the East... blah blah..." There's good DJ's all around... different styles, etc...

Jeff has been playin house sets as well as Hip Hop the past few years. He even put out a compilation on Defected. Ive seen Jeff a few times and hes never dissapointed. He does have some trademark mixes and cuts etc but they're sick!!! He really reads the crowd well, if he sees the Hip Hop aint poppin he switches the style and destroys the place!...... Beale, spot on, my view 2, I have seen both q and jazzy on many occasions... Q is incredible but not magnificent ;) and nothing to argue about his skills, in all 4 orso times i have seen him he never got the crowd going (in a party my ass off way), what he did do is a lot of jaw dropping and ooooh and aaaaaah's. Its two thing you cant compare, one is a showcase to and one is party.. Jazzy always makes the crowd go nuts and i bet he would have no problem doing a rave crowd after Testo and still get them a level higher of natural xtc.(and yes his house skills are dope 2).. He is there to rock the crowd whatever the situation or type of...The on beat thing is a good point, he is if you ask me the most on beat natural scratcher, its like its part of the song playing!

He's a great DJ. I think what makes him great is he's always kept up with his SKill's.
a lot of Dj's, such as Cash money, whilst still agreat DJ, has just kept on bringing out the same styles and skills they were rocking in 87/88.
Jeff's production has gone from level to level, is musical taste has broadened - spinning house, classics, whatever taks his fancy, int he same vein as DJ's like Spinna.
Yet he can still keep up with the young cats on the cut, if you check the current album there are flares and stuff in his cuts.
I think the most important thing about all of Jeffs cuts though is that they add something rather than overpower what he's doing.
He's not the best scratcher, he's not the best mixer, he's not the best selector but in my opinion he's one of the best all rounders.
hope that makes sesne.

your wrong bro ztrip plays everything or anything for the people (for a specific party ).about 90% of dj's dont do that.
jeff is one of my favorites but ztrip would rock a crowd with more energy bro.
you tube it and you will see ( you dont even have to you tube it )
its common since that ztrip is a all around better dj.

ok.
it was 2001 when i realised jazzy jeff is sick
heard mix set of his, and was shocked. for him to be SO fast with vinyl was amazing, no dropped beats, was just flawless, and the scratches ADDED to the completeness of the set. hes one of my favourite house djs, and hes not a house dj!
i was only just getting into dj'ing then, and it just blew my head back.
it was when i picked up jazzy jeff in the house that i realised that jazzy jeff was my favourite dj. the guy double beating scratching and messing about with house music just amazed me.... and again, it was flawless.
then the magnificent arrived... and his production amazed me.
iv seen him live on every occasion iv been able to, and every time hes surprised me, and its been a wicked night. i havent heard many djs who can do that.... im far too picky now.
jazzy jeff is #1 to me, and just about every dj that i know, agrees with me... house, jungle, whatever.

heard mix set of his, and was shocked. for him to be SO fast with vinyl was amazing, no dropped beats, was just flawless, and the scratches ADDED to the completeness of the set. hes one of my favourite house djs, and hes not a house dj!
i was only just getting into dj'ing then, and it just blew my head back.
it was when i picked up jazzy jeff in the house that i realised that jazzy jeff was my favourite dj. the guy double beating scratching and messing about with house music just amazed me.... and again, it was flawless.
then the magnificent arrived... and his production amazed me.
iv seen him live on every occasion iv been able to, and every time hes surprised me, and its been a wicked night. i havent heard many djs who can do that.... im far too picky now.

Actually... if you ask Z..he will tell you he looks up to jeff... while Z is dope as fu**... 2 totally different styles... and the whole "jeff can scratch a little better" comment is totally wrong... Z is a tablist... scrathes are dope... Z is a far better scratcher than Jeff.... you would agree that they are different styles if you actually saw Z's tour show

I agree, When Z is on the tables you stand there with your jaw dropped.
Whem Jeff is on the tables, your jaw is dropped but its danceable. being able to dance is key! Jeff keeps the flow like no other.

Wow, a rapper rapping about his DJ. You don't see that anymore. Shit, you almost never see a DJ really doing "anything" on stage anymore, either. Oh yeah, and the shot of Kenny G vibing to it was crazy funny!

Last night it whas the second time for me to play with Jazzy Jeff.
And he doesn't stop to amaze me ,and the whole crowd.
His selection, his mixes, the scratches...Everything he does is on point.Great to hear and to see!
Ok there are other cats in the game that have better scratches and shit...but it's how and when to use them that makes you a better dj (=my opinion).Like how and when you bring the next song.Timing is important and Jazzy Jeff feels that!
And he makes it look so damn easy ;-)

Yup that is so very true. The dj is usually left out... that was a great show-- and I did say show. Now adays we don't get the "show" anymore. It's just people standing up on stage (most you don't even know who they are), and jumping up and down but with no stage presence whatsoever. Jeff killed it on that video. Nothing extremely technical (especially by today's standards), but the cuts were on points, the scratches were on point, the vibe was on point, the interaction between emcee/dj were on point... now that's how you do it right there!! ;-)

Absolutely, Again, less is more. you don't need a shitload of techniques and scratches. It's like mixing music, you need to drop the right tune at the right time, same thing with scratches.
Also, respect to the rapper who has respect for the DJ
Btw, did anybody notice the mixer Jeff is using. If I compare that to my 57... man, have we come a long way.

Jeff does play house and has for years. His release on defected was a compilation of various artists and included a number of instrumental tracks, some funky stuff and some good ol' over the top diva action as well. Housey house. Not my bag, but true stuff. One of the biggest prints in the world for house music actually.
Incidentally, based on the two sets I've witnessed....he handles business on the house tip. He's also one of the nicer guys you'll ever meet.

Seen Jazzy Jeff twice I think, Q bert at least 4 times that I can remember.
Found Q bert too technical and at times dull. Can be great to watch and listen to but not for a party. In fact the only time the crowd got really excited was when he had the resident dj on another deck and they were messing around together and the nerdy stuff went out the window.
Jeff was easily the top two hip hop sets I've ever seen.
Someone else I was really impressed by was Dj Swamp but I don't remember him even getting a mention on here. Thoughts?

Not to use this as an excuse or anything ;-)...but the needles where reeeaaaly skipping like hell!
They where adjusted to Jazzy Jeff's Shure needles.

Next time i hope to get Jazzy Jeff to share a cut with me on a beat...now that would be realy nice!!
