I Tunes Questions

djpetey 7:35 AM - 23 August, 2004
this is more of an i tunes question than an ssl question, but I have a couple of em and a lot of you guys seem to be I tunes users....

1) I'm using a desktop computer to store my whole mp3 collection and I have two laptops (one for studio and one for clubs) that run ssl.... I want a better system of transferring playlists.... for example, I want to sit at my desktop computer with my whole collection and make a playlist of songs to use this tuesday night at the club.... then I want to put those mp3s on my laptop and repeat this process.... I want to use an external hard drive for the transfer.... is there a way in i tunes to export the mp3s in a certain playlist to a folder or another drive? I have been buring that playlist to data cds, but it takes forever and it wastes 7 or 8 cds every day..... is there a good way to do this with i tunes?

2) this is more general.... when you tell i tunes to adjust the volume on each song to make them play similar, does it save that volume adjustment to the mp3 somehow? when I put them on ssl will it still have that volume adjustment that i tunes did?

thanks for your help....PT

1) If you're on a Mac you can use FireWire target mode, where you start up holding down a certain key (T?)and then the target computer appears on the other one's desktop as a drive. Otherwise you can make a network over Ethernet. Or use a Firewire drive or iPod as a transfer medium. Any one of those options beats burning CDs every time.

If you want to sync the entire music folder and library on both macs you can use a sync app. (I use LaCie's Silverkeeper) to sync the music folder, and sync the iTunes Library file as well. Check www.versiontracker.com for a freeware/shareware sync utility.

im on a pc.... are any of these options avaliable for pc? also, I have external hard drives that could be used as the transfer, and thats my plan, BUT, I want to use playlists in itunes to keep myself organized on my desktop.... and I want to then transfer the mp3s from a playlist to my external (in its own folder or whatever).... right now, I can select "burn playlist to cd" in itunes, but I want a similar option where I can copy the playlist to a folder..... otherwise, I will be stuck hitting "show file location" on each song; copying that mp3, and then placing the copy on the external..... thats no good.... do you know of a way for me to copy a playlist instead of burning it to a cd? does that make sense?

You can copy the playlist to a folder by drag & drop. :)

Cheers petey.

Check iTunes Help for some handy shortcuts; shift-click the 'new playlist'button is "make new playlist from selection",
right click a column header for direct access to column view options... stuff like that.

I set my iTunes music folder to a folder called Music on my external HD. If you set iTunes to copy music to your iTunes music folder if it doesn't reside there, your music will stay on the external. If you copy the iTunes XML file to both machines, you can edit your playlist and set BPMs at work during the day, then be ready for your gig at night. I wish I was a good enough DJ to quit my day job :(
