Dj Paperchase 12:11 AM - 1 July, 2005
Hey Ya'll I just purchased the SSL and am now trying to find out what kind of laptop to buy. Its either a Dell or a MAC.....What do you guys suggest?
mexicannnnnn 12:24 AM - 1 July, 2005
Mac
Dj Paperchase 12:26 AM - 1 July, 2005
Should I buy an external Hard drive to keep all my music on?
mexicannnnnn 12:27 AM - 1 July, 2005
Depends, how much music do you have?
Dj Paperchase 12:33 AM - 1 July, 2005
I have at least 6 crates of records, and I am behind on a lot of new music, i mean a lot!!! lol
mexicannnnnn 12:38 AM - 1 July, 2005
Well get an 80Gig or 100gig internal (5400RPM or faster) HD. If you fill it up fast then you can grab a firewire 400 or 800 drive (on mac) or a USB2 external.
nik39 12:40 AM - 1 July, 2005
Faster drives will heat up your laptop more, w/o any real benefit while using SSL.
mexicannnnnn 12:51 AM - 1 July, 2005
Faster loading from HD to memory. Faster transfer from HD to CPU to network....

Actually all Powerbooks come with 5400RPM drives, ibooks come with 4800RPM HD's.
Dj Paperchase 12:52 AM - 1 July, 2005
Are you talking about external hd's Nik30 or internals?
nik39 12:59 AM - 1 July, 2005
Paperchase, it applies to both.

mexicann, the difference between 4200 and 5400 or even 7200 drives is not that much, it wont make any noticable differen. RPM is important when you need fast seek times like in database usage. But if you SSL I wouldnt buy a faster drive to make sure my laptop heats up as little as possible.
Dj Paperchase 1:03 AM - 1 July, 2005
So do you think I should just go with the 80 GB HD?
mexicannnnnn 1:08 AM - 1 July, 2005
It makes a difference when I want to back up all my songs to my network drive.

Sorry its 3 in the night over here, I cant recall what I was trying to say with that sentence.

Paperchase, I would go with the largest drive, cause I know space is always a problem. You should just be aware of the fact that the more RPM the drive has, the more heat will it produce, and from reading on this board macs have indeed some issues with overheating. Maybe you should also get an iBreez cooler.
mexicannnnnn 1:23 AM - 1 July, 2005
I agree with the ibreeze, nik get some sleep!
Dj Paperchase 1:29 AM - 1 July, 2005
thanks guys!!!
mexicannnnnn 2:12 AM - 1 July, 2005
No problem.

www.itronix.com
that's a site that sells like freaking military-grade laps that are like waterproof and can be dropped and you can even run over them...they're intense

in all honesty, i'd hit up www.discountlaptops.com....check out their chembook 2371v...kick ass system w/ a 4 year parts and labor and a 3 year no questions asked damage replacement for like 2000.
plus they use SATA hard drives, the fastest data transfer out there.
dj osheen 7:28 AM - 2 July, 2005
mac g4 667 512 will do the job just fine
dj osheen 7:32 AM - 2 July, 2005
oh by the way discountlaptops.com sucks to much money
eder 2:29 PM - 2 July, 2005
lol, find a better deal than the one on discountlaptops...don't just say it's too much money and not show a cheaper place

US Military uses Toughbooks
djjstylz 12:10 PM - 3 July, 2005
itronix rugged book only runs a pentium m 1.8. doesnt sound military grade to me. remember ssl doesnt use a lot of your system like a photo editor or music production software does. shop around for what you need and can afford and read reviews, everyone has their own favorites, pc or mac which may not suit YOUR needs. good luck.
Digital DJ 3:23 PM - 3 July, 2005
Mac's for Music & Multi Media use.

Windows PC's for PC Gaming...

Just did my first gig with SSL and I love it. I have a dell Inspiron 9200 and the program blew my FS2 away. Thanks Rane

I find that if you frequent deal websites like gotapex.com or slickdeals.net you will eventually run accross a good deal. I payed 750 dollars for my Dell 700M with 512Mb of ram and a 1.6Ghz Centrino. I would like to have PB, but dollar for dollor the PC is better bargain especially if you are only using Serato.
Charlie 5:17 AM - 5 July, 2005
Dell, imo. New Dells are just faster and higher resolution than top of the line Powerbooks. You stand to save a shitload of money, also.
sixxx 5:33 AM - 5 July, 2005
I agree. If you don't have the money to burn and are only using the laptop for SSL, buy a PC. I have an iBook but I also use it for graphics and other audio stuff. No problems so far. Well worth the $ for my use.
