I started building my own site using powweb hosting, Wordpress as the builder. I used a template for the design but ended up customizing it and getting rid of a lot of it's visual design (pictures, background etc)
Now the thing is, I wanted it to be a bit bloggish and interactive, however using the blog template when people go right to the url, it brings you to the main blog page showing latest entries etc, so whatever mixtape I've put up last it will show that. I don't want that, I want it to land on the description of who i am and genres I can cover blah blah blah. So I grabbed a redirect plug in which works fine for sending the main url to my bio/qualifications, but what that does is screw up trying to get to the blog which is www.djshamann.com
So again..
www. dj shamann . com / home -> www.djshamann.com is where I want it to land when they type in the main url, when redirected it works however it now takes over www.djshamann.com which is the main blog entry or the default home in wordpress, so when you click it it will go to the other page.
I know that i can mess with the headers and have my own menu which I already did, but in Wordpress it seems that only the main blog page displays as it is now (which I prefer) when you want an "all" type section, whereas the other categories display completely different (click on the "music" section to see what I'm saying)
This is th first time I've ever tried to build anything like this so there is alearning curve, however up until this point I've done fine just by researching and Googling things myself. This gets a bit more specific so I was hoping someone would understand what I'm trying to achieve here regardless of my poor communication skills in terms of websites.
Please note, it's still under construction and some of the current design is just placeholder type stuff right now.

Log into the Wordpress Admin Dashboard where you edit all the posts, then on the left menus go down to Settings -> Reading. In there is an option for "Front page displays." Select "A static page" and then choose whatever page you want to come up by default.

Thanks for the response aireyc, that worked but now the same thing happens. It will take me to the desired page when they land, but if you now click the "blog" tab which is the default and is already designated the djshamann url, it just loops back to the landing page.
Is there anyway to take this default blog page and assign it a different url?
I went into categories but since it is default you can't edit the slug, it doesn't even show up to edit.

Yeah that was the original default Dub, which I was trying to get away from.
But what i figured out was this, I set the static page to go to the bio page, and then latest posts wasn't able to go to a blog "category" which was what was bugging me. But I created a new "page" instead of category, removed it from the main header, assigned it to the menus to sit with the other blog tabs on the second header, and now it directs there.
So now I'm good to go. Thanks guys.

I'm confused. On Latest DJ News you feature a full Pioneer setup but under Professional Disc Jockey it's all about the Denon 3700s. Did you just need pics for each area?

Yeah for now I was just worried about navigation, once I get enough content up I think I may rethink the design after summer. Just trying to get the feel of it first. I'm sure this thread will come in handy if I want to step up my game a bit.
Thanks for checking it out.

i highly recommend a template with the overlook your are going for (2 column, 3 column, etc) and tweek that.
although wordpress is very customizable, it is very difficult to create a website from scratch.
my site is a template with css customization and plugins.
@ tishica14, wp was confusing for me at fist. i didn't understand the concept of a post vs a page. but the admin is very very easy to pick up. the editor allows you to upload photos or other files. you can even embed videos or links to other content.

Another one to have is "La Petite URL" - wordpress.org - You can use your own domain name in short links for publishing on Twitter or Facebook. Even though Wordpress now provides this function natively, I think this looks better.

Anybody experienced with Adobe Flash CS5 and website templates? I'm okay with building sites by HTML and Photoshop, but I bought a flash template for my new company, it's set up to edit text from a text file, easy treezy, but the template doesn't allow the the text to exceed the space they allotted in the template. I also want to remove some buttons/move around a few things. It's such a hefty program and I could look at tutorials but maybe somebody could point me in the right direction as to where to start.
This is the original site I started to build, but it feels Myspace-ish and boring
www.makeitbump.com
So this is where I'm headed with it
www.web-flash-template.com
The tables are set up in their own format and I want to add my content my way, rather than working around their set up. I emailed the template designer and he told me I could work it all out form the .fla, when I open the .fla in flash i see nothing other than a black square. I'm in a bit over my head.

Please don't make a website completely using Flash. In general, it's really annoying.

I'm sorry to have annoyed you DCD, I'll halt all plans now ;p
TBH I've never been interested in a flash site, I don't like the big intros and "enter site" but this one is much simpler, it's got one main page and the only thing that changes is the content tables. It's simple, catches the eye of the market I'm trying to attract with it and done deal.
@DJDFECT a buddy of mine is great at SEO, I'm going to let him handle that.

I said in general it's annoying, not "it's annoying to me." The only reason I'm against it is because it's a hassle to both users and web developers. Users are used to using the back button, so when they press back they're going to get annoyed at the fact that they can't use it. It's a user-experience thing. The only upside is that it looks nice (and in your case, easy to manage).
It's still possible to have a non-Flash webpage that does all that you want. You can have a non-Flash website that's one page, simple, and catches the eye of your market.

@ DCD I was only messing around, but did you see the template? There is no need for a back button, it's all laid out in one place.
Anyway, I already purchased the template, had I realized certain things, i probably would've went a different route, however now that I already have it I'm going to try and make it work.

Nice. Thank you for the answer. Quick too :)
I was thiking a combination of captcha to register and the akismet to block spam posts. I didn't really want to make users have to go through the captcha process everytime they want to post. Is that how yours is set up or is it on registration only?

Anybody using a good "Tweet to download" solution?
There is a plug in for Wordpress but you have to upload to your media section, WP doesn't allow us to upload anything over 2mb, so I use a filemanager to upload to my host.
There are services out there that allow you to paste a link in and they generate a button for you, but when you press the "continue to Twitter" button they give a scary list of what you're permitting them to do. To the lamen it may discourage them.
So I'm looking at other options here.

Same deal, but again the FB version doesn't work. I got further with it for the FB than I did paywithatweet but still faulty, I ended up leaving a message on the developers FB wall, let's see if anything happens.

www.paywithatweet.com+1. I used it to give away my NYE countdown on my blog last year and had a lot of success.
Yeah that's a great link BigDookie, much better than the ones I had seen prior. I found the Facebook side of it doesn't work so I tried another one at www.estago.com
Same deal, but again the FB version doesn't work. I got further with it for the FB than I did paywithatweet but still faulty, I ended up leaving a message on the developers FB wall, let's see if anything happens.

What do you guys think about opening links in new windows? Like on Street Fighta's page for example the Mixcloud link and some of the others open in the same window. I prefer to have links on other websites open in a separate windows because often when someone leaves your site they don't come back.

I kept pretty straight with my own site -> www.djrickyjay.com
I also did the design on Panic City's site --> www.djpaniccity.com
some more of my work --> www.96firm.com
I used to be 100% custom on sites, but wordpress has brought alot of value, options, and possibilities to the market, similar to serato with the dj industry...
Hey Ricky,
When i go to your site, my virus protection kicks out a warning about JS/Timbum.B exploit.
Here is someinfo about the exploit, just want you to be safe and make sure you werent hacked. Its not happening on panickcity nor 96firm. Only happens on the rickyjay site when i click on your picture to enter the site.

Gonna send you a PM about this as well as i tested it from a few different PCs just now to make sure it wasnt mine screwing up.

You contacting SonicWall won't do much. That's a corporate-level hardware filter and firewall. He needs to contact his own company's IT department. I've had experience with SonicWall and previously used it at a school for heuristics-based filtering of Social Networks (i.e.: MySpace, Tagged, Facebook, etc. since a lot of students would attempt to use web-proxy's to bypass the specific domain blocking). SonicWall also has a habit of blocking sites for perceived content. Hell, I remember back when it blocked one of my old websites for pornography where there was absolutely none; there was just a whole bunch of video games.

Sonicwall category blocking is done by the Sonicwall CFS Service, They used to use Cyberpatrol but have stopped. He should definitely contact sonicwall to get removed. If the sonicwall service has listed his site, who knows what other lists he's on.
You may not even have anything bad on your website, if you are using a shared host (which unless you are running your own webserver you probably are on a shared host) they block the IP of that host if ANY of the sites are triggering categories.
First thing you should do is go here to check your site: cfssupport.sonicwall.com
I checked yours and its listed as pornography.
After you check the site go here to fill out a removal request. As i said earlir they may not be able to help you if you are on a host who has a site that triggers this category:
cfssupport.sonicwall.com
Hope this helps.

If sonicwall comes back to you and said your IP is blocked, contact your ISP let them know whats going on and that you want to be moved to a different host/IP.

No kidding? Heh. Things have changed in the past few years; and that latter part is definitely true. Hell, I'm currently dealing with hell with my site being content filtered by Google Chrome because the domain it sits under is screwed - even though my site is clean and has been for 2 years.

Godaddy probably runs HUNDREDS of websites on the same IP address. Someone else may be hosting some porn on your IP. You should contact GoDaddy for help as well as fill out the form i posted for Sonicwalls CFS service, they are usually pretty good with this sort of thing.

Thanks. What took the longest was finding someone to design the banner for me. I posted on Facebook (close to 2,000 "friends") and on Twitter (close to 6,500 followers) if anyone was a graphic designer. I guess nobody wanted my money lol..
Eventually had one of my former classmates do it who went to school for graphic design.

My ISP couldn't do anything about it if they wanted to. The actual domain is owned by another party who allows it to be used freely for subdomain hosting through afraid.org. The problem is that other sites have likely used the same domain and hosted questionable content themselves which has messed me up because now I have to actually find the most similar domain possible or try to snatch up a domain on a TLD assigned by IANA to a country on the other side of the planet (East Timor) in September when it expires. I have an idea for another, but the french make it nearly impossible for anyone who doesn't live in or is not a citizen of France to get registered through their TLD, so my options right now are limited.

Indeed. GoDaddy's shared hosting is absolutely ridiculous. They've hosted thousands of sites on the same IP in the past and it wouldn't surprise me, in this age of diminishing IPv4 availability, to learn that the number has grown.

For another site I was building I installed a free theme, one of the ones that give you half the option and full when you buy the upgrade. My friend said it set off the virus alert on his computer which made no sense since there wasn't much content and I knew the theme was legit.
What happens though as I've since found out that some of these theme spots will write some sneaky code into these themes (more than the usual "I made this theme, buy my product" footer)
There's a plug in called Tac wordpress.org that scans your theme and makes sure there isn't anything malicious to will set off virus alerts.
