when i try to exit the scratch live software with the hardware pluged in it tells me i have to shut down the computer by holding the power key

This is called a Kernel Panic and this is an issue with the New 2011 Macs. Apple is aware of this problem and is coming out with a fix for it. There are various programs having this issue on the New 2011 Macs.

Google shows plenty of proof: www.google.com

Some people have to close the ScratchLIVE program first and then disconnect the unit -- this may avoid the Panic...it doesnt work for all.
