Is anyone using MIDI Synthesizers, Foot pedals or MIDI Contollers in Performance

Is anyone using a MIDI console (e.g. Foot Pedals, MIDI Controllers, or MIDI Synthesizers) to add to their performance?
AKAI has got a tone of stuff I would like to utilize but I'm looking for some ideas before I pick something up.
Is anyone using MIDI to control their lighting, cue points, or even perhaps a smoke machine?
If anyone is doing this is anyone doing it using the using a 5 pin MIDI connector instead of USB? My Allen&Heath Xone:DX has a MIDI OUT/IN interface on the back and I am trying to find some good ways to put this to use.
Any ideas or suggestions?

I've used the line6 FBV pedal before...
guitars.musiciansfriend.com
they also have the fbv shortboard for $100 cheaper

these are the pedals for the Line6 guitar amps, but they work by sending midi signals. I don't know if i'd buy one just to use with serato, but I already had it so I figured I'd try it out... used it for a little while and it worked pretty well. it connects by usb or a cat5e cable. I mapped it to control effects.... a set of buttons to scroll through and select the effect i wanted to use, others to turn them on and off, and the rocker pedals to control each of the super knobs. mapped other buttons for auto looping and a few other things. I play guitar though, so it's kind of second nature for me to control effects and loops with foot pedals while I'm doing other shit with my hands... the only thing that didn't work so well was triggering cue points with my feet... the timing was always a little off. there are other midi controllers out there that are less expensive and work just as well if not better. I ended up getting an x1 eventually... just throwing this out there b/c you mentioned foot pedals specifically.

The TTM 57SL Mixer has a 1/4'' input for a foot pedal. Has anyone used this functionality to their advantage?

I used the small akai LP8 controller, but I use the dicer instead now, I find them easier. I also use teh hell out of the controls on my 68, but I don't mix video or control lights etc with it.

Reggae,
I've got the LPD8 and the Dicer too actually. I am going to start using the dicer a bit more since they are plug and play (pre-programmed) and stick them on top of my CDJs.
Another MIDI Controller that is great to use is the M-Audio X-ponent (Made for the Torq software). I used it to control Scratch live for a while. It has got tons of MIDI Assignable buttons and a bank function so you can get more by flipping a switch. What's more is has a cross fader and I would use that crossfader to control SL-Video.
Back to my footpedal question, is there a footpedal that Serato endorses or had in mind specifically for us to use? Especially given that they have a 1/4'' TRS input for a footpedal on the TTM 57SL which imply there was a specific type of footpedal they were expecting us to buy.
Can any admins or moderators help me out here?
The way I figure it, if there is an interface on my equipment then there should be some good use for it otherwise I can write it off with confidence as being useless.

Daktyl,
I would certainly be using the foot pedal to control effects. I find it difficult to control effects using my LPD8. My friends M-Audio X-ponent was OK at controlling effects but still left something to be desired. Pretty much if I'm going to apply an effect I want my hands to stay on the wheels of steel to make sure timing is on point and use my foot to apply the effect.
I think you are spot on though Daktyl, for using a footpedal to control effects. I think you are right that cuing would not be the best application for a footpedal.

Reggae,
What I'm referring to in this thread specifically are non-USB MIDI controllers/consoles. This means a MIDI device with a 5 pin interface
www.guitarcenter.com
or a 1/4'' TRS input.
www.idjnow.com
(see picture in lower left)
The reason I'm asking this is becasue my Allen&Heath Xone:DX has a 5 pin MIDI IN/OUT on the back of it
www.djtechtools.com
(See far right section of the mixer in picture above)
and I wanted to put that to good use. Also, where I work at the moment they have at TTM 57SL with a 1/4'' input for a footpedal and I wanted to experiment with that too.
