what is this mixing style called??

DJ C.A.P 4:36 AM - 17 July, 2007
It's when u have the crossfader in the middle the WHOLE Time, and u mix with the volume control of the channels. I never saw it mixed like that until last saturday night. I always had the volume channels all the way up and just mixed with the fader.
DJ Prinvale` 4:39 AM - 17 July, 2007
I do that sometimes in gigs. I don't think there is a name for it but certain songs just sound better faded w/ the volume faders.
dj_soo 4:48 AM - 17 July, 2007
EDM DJs use this technique more since they tend to do more smooth, long blends than cut/drop blends like in hiphop
AdamJay 4:54 AM - 17 July, 2007
no name for it.

i mix with a combination of gains and eqs mostly.. faders a little bit... i never use the cross fader for "mixing", only cutting and scratching. this gives me a more consistent volume throughout the mix, instead of that 3dB boost some folks get when both tracks are live.

there's no wrong way to use the mixer.
DJ C.A.P 4:56 AM - 17 July, 2007
well, I;m gonna try mixing like that to see if I liek it more. it does give u more volume control which isn't bad
dj hoodat baller 5:08 AM - 17 July, 2007
It's called mixing up and down. The term came from mixing with the old radio shack mixers. You either cross fade or go up and down i can do both but i choose to cross fade
DjRekTek 5:36 AM - 17 July, 2007
I'd say channel fader mixing..........
bandoma 5:38 AM - 17 July, 2007
i always use the upfaders to mix. main reason is b/c i scratch alot and i have my xfader curve to the sharpest settings.
dj_KaSE 5:46 AM - 17 July, 2007
Like bandoma, I use the channel faders for mixing because I leave the crossfader at its sharpest setting at all times.
dj_KaSE 5:46 AM - 17 July, 2007
Don't know what this style is called, though.

when u say "sharp"

u mean. if u move the fader to the left or to the right a lil bit. It's on full volume
bandoma 5:54 AM - 17 July, 2007
^^^ that's right
DJ C.A.P 5:55 AM - 17 July, 2007
I'm gon try it haha. I always have it so the volume moves real slowly across the fader

Yep, real big with the House heads, and even today I do Mix R&B and some rap like that too, now that I think about it.

I think it also comes from the REAL OLD DAYS when all the TOP Underground clubs had Bozak and Urei mixers with rotary knobs.

mixes.suenomartino.net
www.duo-audio.com

When the newer mixers (like GLI) became popular back in that day, instead of slowly dialing in a mix with the knobs, you just go up on the volume and bring the other down during a long ride for a true "mix".

That's me. I never use the crossfader. :-D
Panic City 6:18 AM - 17 July, 2007
i know, i mix like that too. i think i noticed a lot of the bay area cats at our session on satuday mixing with the crossfader instead.

I might move to using the crossfader though bc im tryin to learn to scratch and drop a song in.

DLo is flawless at that shit
Jay-R 6:25 AM - 17 July, 2007
I MIX AND SCRATCH WITH BOTH.

my xfader is always sharp on my 56. you also have more control of fine tuning your transitions. i learned that way when all the faders back in the day were crap and i would always make em bleed.
DJ Art Pumpin Payne 6:25 AM - 17 July, 2007
Another question since I am not a scratcher.

Some mixers have a Hamster switch so you can use the volume faders for Scratching and Transforming instead of the crossfader. What is that called?

That fucked me up bad the first time I used a mixer with one (playing a House gig of course with a Battle mixer???). Volume was all the way up but no sound.
sixxx 6:25 AM - 17 July, 2007
I use this method most of the time. I used to crossfade but I found my mixes to be more SMOOTH by using this method instead of the crossfader. I use the crossfader to scratch, cut, etc.
DJ Nick Lee 7:35 AM - 17 July, 2007
For those of you that mix in the up and down style what slope are your upfaders set at?
DJ K-otik 8:07 AM - 17 July, 2007
I use the crossfader to drop in tracks most of the time, since most of the time I'm scratching them in (although I still use the crossfader when I just drop a track normally). When I fade a song out, though, I use the channel fader. When the song is completely out and the channel fader is all the way closed, I close the crossfader and then open up the channel fader again. Then I repeat :) Make sense? It's probably akin to what Jay-R is talking about.
dj disturbed 9:25 AM - 17 July, 2007
When im mixing hip-hop i mostly use the x-fader... but when i mix ANY EDM i use the channel faders to mix and use the x-fader for quick cuts and scratching (yes I scratch when mixing EDM... but only when i mix dnb or breaks b/c it fits in when those styles)

on the 57, my channel slopes are set to about 2 out of 10. 0 being slowest, 10 being fastest.

slopes: 66.221.205.118

what he said... smoothness counts as a +1 on the dancefloor.
shiestO! 4:21 PM - 17 July, 2007
i mix both ways also out of necessity... i used to use the xfader only on gradual (slow) setting and creep the volume in but some mixers have that f*cking dip in the middle, so to solve that, i just put fast slope on the x fader, keep that bitch in the middle and use the channel faders for mixing with subtle eq changes (edm).

i use both for hip hop too but scratch exclusively with the x fader.

The hamster switch reverses the on/off or 1/2 of a fader. It's mostly used on the crossfader because it's easier to do some scratches in hamster mode (like 2 click flares or crabs). I haven't seen too many people use the hamster switch on the line faders, but it exists on many mixers.

And for the record, I use all three faders for all types of volume changing action!!! There are NO rules.
Audio1 4:29 PM - 17 July, 2007
I guess Im a little different. From mixing drum&bass and EDM over the years, I tend to use the EQ's alot, with hiphop too, for smoother transitioning. I know alot of people dont care about EQ's but they do make a difference between slamming sets together and making something sound clean.
DJ-A 4:30 PM - 17 July, 2007
i think fades sound the best that way... like many of you mentioned i too only use the cross fader for things like scratching.

if i'm at an event where a good fade is a must like a wedding, the cross fader stays in the middle.

a fade that annoys me is when someone uses the cross fader has it to the left, hits play on the other channel and fades all the way from the left to the right all while thinking he's the shit and that was his best fade yet
kicko 4:31 PM - 17 July, 2007
Ha, for me i mix hip hop with the cross fader and house with volumes. Do whatever works

dude... i'm on the same page here. even some of my DNB friends don't use the EQ's, they just slam tunes in. ????? why? i dunno. i'm an eq fiend. best way to do it smoothly.

I use the hamster switch on the line faders to scratch a LOT. Its so much more natural to pull down the fader than to push it up, especially if you scratch regular style. It also seems to me its easier on your wrists than using the crossfader.
dj_KaSE 5:32 PM - 17 July, 2007
My channel fader slopes are set at the slowestt on my 56.

I used to have a bitch of a time using the channel faders to mix on my 07 because of the weird, i.e. non-smooth slope. In fact, I still use the 07 when I mix at home and have to adjust the slope that it's more smooth and constant like the 56's.
sixxx 5:53 PM - 17 July, 2007
I agree dj_KaSE....

low volume, low volume, low volume... LOUD... lol
dj_KaSE 5:58 PM - 17 July, 2007
Oh that's right, you have an 07 too. The "gangsta" DJ and his 07 hahaha.

Yeah, I hate the tip-toe method of carefully adjusting the 07's channel faders. Boo.

It doesn't really bother me because I usually start with the fader half way anyway. I scratch the song in or whatever using the crossfader ALWAYS on the sharp cut. Then, manually fade up while always watching the volumes. I've been told my mixes are smooth. I like them that way too.

I'm gangsta!!!!! hahahaha

From what I understand, you can adjust the line fader curve but the switch is only available underneath the faceplate.

At least that's how it was with the 05 - try taking off the faceplate and seeing if there's a fader adjust
dj_KaSE 7:01 PM - 17 July, 2007
On the 07, there are control knobs available on its exterior. It's the 07, meng...this shit pioneered these types of features.

haha! i was about to say the exact same thing! i hated the upfade curve on my 07...shit is not very conducive for mixing. my 56 on the other hand is very nice!
Psyko Logical 8:23 AM - 18 July, 2007
I keep my all my contours on my 56 sharp, and the up faders upside down for scratching. I use the gains for fades. Sometimes I'll switch the ups back to standard with a slow fade for echo type effects ect.
