I went to copy music from my tower to my laptop today and I got a scare. While trying to import the files, SSL died (for the first time ever). I tried to restart it, and it kept popping up an error right after the program loaded. Interface connected or not, same deal. I thought, no biggie, I'll re-install it. So I try this and during install some of the text in the wizard isnt showing up . . . that's random . . . anyway, I get build 1107 installed and re-start the program. Same deal. I go ahead completely remove SSL through the wizard. Try to install through the original CD. I get this window even before it loads SSL:
ScratchLIVE.exe - Unable to Locate Component
This program has failed to start because MFC71U.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
After numerous attempts to re-install the application, I'm still getting the same window.
What's going on? Do I have to install windows again? Why did everything become so corrupt all of a sudden?
I went ahead and tried to install SP1 with no luck. Do I need to do a whole new clean install of XP?

Yup... same thing happened to me once. The only difference was that I didn't have SSL on my laptop at the time. It has nothing to do with Scratch Live, just so you know. I spent two weeks transferring music back to my hardrive from the master CDs, but now things are peachy (wish I could have just networked to a desktop like you are going to have to do).

You should be able to use the windows repair and restore point stuff to roll back to a valid version of that file (it's a core windows dll).

I tried that at the time... it didn't work (and I have no idea why). Trust me, I tried EVERYTHING because the last thing I wanted to do was reinstall every single file on my laptop. I do hope that Infinitive tries that option and it works for him/her. Good luck!

How should I go about doing this?
I'm thinking about cleaning everything up anyway, I really wish that windows didn't suck so bad that it ruins itself from time to time . . .
Thanks guys for your quick responses.

I sure did . . . when I put MFC71U.DLL in the system directory, it said a different one was missing, I downloaded that one, same deal . . . after three different .DLLs it stopped complaining, but then Serato started but crashed after a couple seconds.
so I'm guessing that just replacing them won't do the trick.

If you fire up windows help and search for system restore it has a bunch of info and links for running the system restore wizard. This will let you roll your system back to a previous state when everything worked - it's actually pretty neat. Good luck!

Update:
I went ahead and installed XP again, installed service pack 1 again, and the USB update again.
Started SSL and got this: This program has failed to start because MFC71U.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
Needless to say I almost lost it completely. It looks like the Windows installer half-assed it and didn't fix the problem, so now I'm wiping the drive and starting from scratch.
I'd have to say that one of the biggest problems with SLL is the operating system it runs on. :D At least we know its a windows problem and not an SSL bug.

infinitive, try uninstalling SSL, and then going into your "Program Files\Serato\ScratchLIVE" directory and deleting its contents. Then try reinstalling build 1107. The installer should have also copied 3 dll files - which are required to run Scratch LIVE - into this directory (MFC71u.dll, msvcp71.dll and msvcr71.dll).

Alright, this is really starting to piss me off. This IS a Serato problem, NOT a windows problem.
I ran Active KillDisk, erased my drive, reinstalled everything, and started making crates in SSL and it did the same damn thing. This is seriously ridiculous, I can't believe I wasted so much time.
Nick, I tried what you said above and it doesn't work.
How can I get in touch with a representative so I can get this working? I've been without SSL for a week now and have been trying to fix this in every way possible.

also, when I try to uninstall the program, it gives me a message "this option is only valid for programs that are currently installed.

infinitive, can you list your complete system specs for us? also any peripherals connected, extra devices etc...
when you say the same thing happened, do you mean the DLL thing, or just crashing?
If you prefer, you can email me at support@serato.com to continue the troubleshoot that way.

Complete system specs:
Sony VAIO PCG-FX240K
800Mhz
256MB RAM
WinXP Pro/SP1/USB fix
Absolutely nothing else on the drive but music, no peripherals.
I connect it to the network to transfer music from my tower.
I just wiped the drive and did a clean install of windows. Serato booted, and worked fine. I applied the 1105/1107 updates and they worked as well. I proceeded to import my music files into crates and the program crashed. When you click more information about the crash it complains about the missing .DLL . . . I removed serato, deleted its directory and reinstalled. No luck. It seems like nothing worked except for the clean install of windows, but there is some kind of bug which must be causing the problem. Could it be a corrupt music file?

It can only get stranger . . . every time I started ScratchLIVE and it crashed, it was hashing a certain new music file . . . I went ahead and deleted it and SSL seems to perform fine.
I'm guessing that this is an issue . . . a corrupt music file may cause this problem. I'm going to go ahead and give the program a run through and make sure alright. Josh, I already sent you an email, please ignore it for the time being.

It's really simple, just open a new windows explorer window, and in the address bar type ftp:// followed by ftp.serato.com

It's really simple, just open a new windows explorer window, and in the address bar type ftp:// followed by ftp.serato.com (all one string like a URL) and push enter, depending on your connection, explorer should logon shortly.
Then just drag your file from another explorer window onto the incoming folder, and explorer should handle the rest!
