WAV/AIF editing.

D- 1:38 AM - 29 June, 2007
I recorded a mix with Serato, and now I have a massive .aif file. Does anyone know a simple, program that will cut it up into multiple tracks so I can burn a CD that isn't just one big song? I am using Roxio to burn CDs, and it doesn't even recognize the .aif format. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Any wave editor can do that. Soundforge, Adobe Audition/Cool Edit, Audacity, Goldwave, etc. The later two are freeware.

and that's odd that Roxio wouldn't recognize the aif format. That's the standard format for CDs.

Huh... I always thought WAV was standard, Sixxx. I've been using computers for a LONG time, and although I've seen the extension listed different places, I don't think I've ever run across one first hand. Are AIFs maybe more typical of Macs? I agree that it is a bit odd that Roxio isn't seeing it. I'm on brand new Dell, and the Roxio was what came on it. I hadn't used Roxio in a few years ('cause the last time I used it, it sucked). I think maybe it's time to ditch it, once again.

Let's play the "Which one is best, regardless of price," game! Yayyyyy!!!

If you put a CD in your drive and don't play it on anything and just drag and drop the tracks out of the CD, you'll find out they're AIFF files. :)

I stand corrected. I guess AIFF is mac and WAV is PC. :)

That would explain a lot. Why do they call Serato a Windows program if it's so obviously not? If I had known that I couldn't use my right mouse button in Serato, and had to learn an entirely new system of 'dumbing' programs into working, I never would have bought a 57 and/or SSL. And the compatibility issues (partly why I detest Apple; for always making everything so darn 'easy'), on top of all this? Stop me if I'm wrong, but why is my supposed Windows program spitting out a proprietary Mac format? I have a sneaking suspicion that I got duped, once again. Guess I should have done my homework a little better before I invested all that money... My fault!

Aiff isn't a proprietary Mac format and there is really little difference between aiff and wav.

Aiff isn't the format used by CDs although it is similar (both PCM data) Macs just automatically rip CD tracks to aiff when you drag them off of a CD.

Roxio is crap, any decent Windows CD writing program will be capable of loading aiff files. Also most CD writing programs (such as Nero) will allow you to insert track markers into a large file so that the CD ends up with tracks even though you started with one big file.

Hi D-,

I'm surprised to hear your burning software doesn't recognize AIFF, that's unusual in my experience.

Deepburner is a free CD authoring tool which seems to be fine with AIF files - www.deepburner.com

or to convert between formats, Switch - www.nch.com.au is a tiny download and free to use.

I hope you don't really feel duped, if you do we want to know how we can improve things; in general and in your case specifically.
