DJ'ing a Gig For Apple Computer...
latindj
5:41 PM - 11 June, 2007
Guys, need some advice as I mostly do weddings... My buddy hooked me up with a gig for Apple computer at the end of the month in San Francisco (my birthday!) Imagine their faces when I show up with my TTM 57 running with a Dell laptop! (priceless) Anyway, not sure what to throw at them and I wanna make sure everything I play has them "wowed"...any recommendations for a gig like this? I know the mainstream stuff pretty well, just wondering if I should stick with that as I'm betting the crowd will be very mixed, or should I try and bring a club atmosphere or ?
Peace!
Peace!

You run up in there with that DELL and refuse to play on anything else. You are going to get blasted with geeks asking why you're not using a mac, be sure to tell that you get WAAAAYYYY hotter chics using a Dell.

You DJ so bad, .... lol too easy.
Anyway, this is a corporate party so get all the cheesy tunes ready and pretend you're doing a wedding actually.

I think Sixxx is correct. I'd play it like a wedding. Then if need be, ease over to the more "club" type music.

No. It should be... You DJ so bad, you use a REAL Apple. Dumb. Dumb.

Back to the gig. Yeah. Get your Old School ready too. Can't go wrong with that. And, major geeks like 80's stuff too.

uhh I'd borrow a friends Apple. I hope you have an external hd with your crates on it. You're gonna get alot of shit using a Dell at an Apple party because you're going to be the center of attention. I'd be scared to show up there with a Dell.

congrats latindj, that could be a fun gig.
do you know if it's a general party for apple or is it for some smaller group within the company?
the only reason i ask is that they've got some serious music nerds involved with iTunes. that woman who used to own Aquarius Records here in SF works there now and i could see that there might be some serious music fans who are looking for some out of the mainstream type stuff. i'm just saying that i'd be ready with it.
at least have cut chemist's "the audience is listening" ready to cue so they can all dance with their iPod nano's.

I'm not scurred! Shit, there's a reason I use a pc...why change for them? Maybe like CMOS says I can open a few eyes when I tell them that I don't like USB dropouts on the Macs? Or maybe I'll say "sure, I can switch to a macbook in 10 minutes if you guys give me one (for keeps!)" Then I'd Ebay that fucker...
poloi3eai2
6:23 PM - 11 June, 2007
I'd use a Mac if I want to get rehired by them. Shit they're probably paying you bank. It's not like you're dealing with a shady promoter or cheap ass club owner.

using your current laptop isn't even an issue. you're a professional and you use what you use, no apologies. if it was good enough to get the gig, it's good enough to rock the gig.
the adidas/nike thing isn't really comparable because you're the same dj w/either kicks. the computer is part of your set-up as a pro.

if i were you, i would look at the top songs selling on itunes----considering a lot of people are going to looking at comupters (using itunes) playing with ipods (runs in sync with itunes)
Make sure you have clean versions of tracks---stay away from the dirty dirty
Other than that-you can't go wrong with electronic music that doesn't have anywords---lounge type stuff
thats just my 2 cents-----

That would be pretty funny to get things started with a mac start up sound. You can probably find them on line. But you should consider getting an apple sticker and putting it over your dell logo. You can take it right off after and wouldn't catch any heat. Also if they're taking pics, they might ask you to cover it up.

Why would I turn a blind eye to MY user experience over the last 3 years? I have 3 macs and have been using Serato. I have not had any dropouts.
Anyway, this isn't even what this thread is about.
Yo LatinDJ,
Yeah with it being in SF, I have the feeling it will be pretty corporate but you can still go a little left with them

Apple is huge in San Jose. i dont think it is as large as it could be. i'd investigate and find the purpose for the event. where will it be? call the place and find out the size of the room.

no, no, no... what you do is let them know a head of time that you use a Dell. and you let them know that you are aware of how important this event is to them, and let them know you are willing to copy your files over to a MACBOOK PRO if they want you to use an apple computer. because "from exeriance" you know many pictures may have you in the background and the glowing apple logo would really be good publicity.
you own me for that one... if you are going to get hooked up that will do it for you

You guys crack me up! Geeez, haven't been online yet...got home around 2 a.m. and straight to bed. It was a cool party, more like a HUGE wedding music wise. Played just about every genre, about a bizillion requests...damn, you should have seen the dance floor go ape shit when I played No Sleep 'til Brooklyn! Funniest chit I've seen in a long time...from what I understand it's like an old apple favorite. There were some ZZ top looking dudes head bangin' all over the place, totally nutz!
Young Shiz is right, not all employees got iPhones, they gave out gift bags and from what I could tell, some "may" have had a phone in them, not sure. I did get to see and play with one up front. It's pretty dope but not for me. Besides, got a much better hook-up, many times over, but can't disclose...sorry.
Yes I did end up using a Mac book pro, 2 gigs ram, 2.4 dual core...sorry my fellow PC brothers but it was a "special" request and like I said...well, nevermind. :)
I was on stage mixing and my buddy was MC when someone commented to him how we had the Mac book up there for looks, just cause Jobs was there. My buddy quickly told him hell no! Not for looks, he's mixing the show with it and his CDJ's...the Guy couldn't freakin' believe that I was live mixing, thought it was a pre-recorded mix. Had to come up stage just to make him a believer....ha, ha it was a nice compliment for me. To think that my live mixing was actually a pre-recorded/edited mix.
All in all, things went extremely well. Received many, many compliments from all and I'm pretty confident we'll be doing business again in the near future. I wish I could give you guys a lot more details, the whole operation was amazing how they pulled it off. Basically, they set up a huge stage, food stations for a couple thousand people, sound and lighting all within an hour and a half. Unbelievable the kind of man power hired to do the function.
I have pics but will have to find out if it's OK to post them here. If not, maybe I'll put them up somewhere private. Stay tuned.
-Peace

Stay tuned.

... you can't disclose ;)
Booooo, you traitor :) Did you at least use the buggy USB port so that you get USB dropouts, to make sure Steve Jobs hears what crap they are doing? ;)

^^^Ultimate, read between the lines like Nik did...that's all I'm saying.
Nik, I have to admit, I had absolutely Zero problems with the Mac all night. Used an external Lacie drive through the firewire port. Not bad for my first Mac experience I must say.

Dude, this guy arrived out of nowhere. Basically, I was tapped on the shoulder and asked to turn the music off and exit the stage. We passed each other as I exited down the stairs. He did his thing and was gone just as quickly as he had arrived. Sorry guys but I don't think he really had the time or really cared about USB dropouts at the moment. :(

Steve came out of nowhere?
See, It was the Magic Dust like Santa uses! How can a fat man fit down a chimney - MAGIC DUST. You guys thought I was crazy for giving Steve Job props. I told you the guy is Magic or some shit. Explain the success of the iPod? Explain ease of use of the Mac OS and how Mac hardware just works - PLUG and PLAY. MAGIC DUST. That shit was probably flying around the room and now you are infected.... No going back to your Dell now.
:)
Seriously dude, I hope you got to keep the MacBook Pro because you have been touched by the power of the Mac OS and you know what they say....
Once you go Mac you NEVER go Back!
Still waiting on the Pics......

I have to agree with you on that one, seems like I can get a PC Lappy with the same specs for half the cost and still have Zero problems using it with Serato. Let's just say I would never "buy" one, Mac that is. ;)

I'm just wondering if you paid for the Mac indirectly? Would your compensation would have been more if your already had one? Economics say that you should have gotten approx $2500 more if you already had the MBP. That damn Steve, twisted your arm and made you get a Mac no matter if you liked it or not. lol
