Why are djs so hateful towards other djs

I just dont see the reason for everyone on here to be so hateful to Pauly D, and Nick Hogan, and djs that cant dj without serato, and waveform watchers, and people that cant scratch great, and people that scratch too much, and people that use crooklyn clan, and........that is all i see on here is negative talk, are people on here ever happy or are they just all jealous. I dont understand, i can mix without watching the screen but if someone comes up and messes me up while im mixing i will watch the screen to help me out.....does that make me bad? It seems like djs in general might just be angry and judgemental people. DJs will come up to me when im playing and be like "serato sucks i use cds, i would never use a computer" and my response is that is why you are watching me play on a friday or saturday night. If you come to the club to hate on the other djs you are awful and this needs to stop...... all around.

yeah, this is a good question.
seems a lot of DJ's love to diss other DJ's... i suppose it's worse in rap, but stiil it is a bit much.
seems like a lot of egotistical people are DJ's, and therefore there will be a big clash of ego's amongst everyone.
i really don't care anymore. sure, there's wack cats who deserve some of the hate they get, but i'm just happy to be doing what i love for a living, and try to live by the saying "what you say about others actually says more about you". i try to let what i do with music speak for me.
i may privately (in a personal convo with a friend) give my opinions on another DJ, but i try not to run my mouth much anymore. it really gets you nowhere ultimately.
i won a big tri-state DJ battle back in 2000, but soon after i realized i had no desire left to compete really. what's the point really? there will always be someone on the come up behind you who's hungrier, more talented, and generally better than you, so if you ever reach the top you won't be there for long. sure it's fun, and it can push you to be better, but some let it become everything they're about as an artist. i think that approach is flawed personally, i actually found that once i let go of the competitive side of it, i was far more creative with the actual music, as it was less driven by trying to outdo or impress anyone, and more driven by a genuine interest in sound exploration.

and yeah, there's those cats who show up to your gigs and whisper in each other's ears...
fucking herbs imo.
but i let it ride cuz ultimately they're spending money at the bar, a cut of which ends up in my pocket, so go ahead, run your mouth all night long.
it's funny, i've put the word out that i'll gladly battle if challenged by these shit talkers, but none ever take me up on it. it would be fun, i would have fun with the practice and make sure i shut them up for once and for all. put your skills where your mouth is or STFU, imo.
they come in the club and think they got you all figured out. but i'm not in the club skratching and juggling all night long, trying to show off. 99% of the club's patrons are there to dance and have a good time, not watch you all night. therefore i don't really flex skills in the club much, so these cats think i can only just mix or something.
oddly enough you hear them out later and they're steady trying to do too much, trainwrecking, mixing off measure, skratching and juggling shit that is just out of context, and fucking up the dancefloor's momentum cuz they're going too hard.
i just laugh to myself and keep it moving. fuck 'em. it's whatever.
you're right, if they used the time they spend talking shit about other DJ's into practicing and getting better at party rocking they might be doing gigs for more than $75.00, or for those who really run their mouth, they could win the DMC's with all that time they'd save.
fucking herbs imo.

Djing has always been a competitive thing, since the early days of Jamaican sound systems to hip Hop's inception and beyond, from who had the biggest sound system on the block, to the club/disco/house Dj's who got all the exclusive records before the next guy.... it is what it is. The only difference is now that anybody can be a Dj overnight without understanding the history of the culture and now they get their feelings hurt when they realize it's not a "we are the world" scene.
If they can't take the heat, get the fuck out the kitchen. As for Pauly D, I'm not bothered by him personally, but unfortunately for him he's the poster boy for an exploited and poor representation of a side of our culture that is pretty much an embarrassment to anybody who's put in any real work and saacrificed for this thing of ours. I would rather Dj's focus that energy towards the fucked up scene instead of worrying about a puppet, but again, it goes back to our history of competition and to some it's just primal instinct to want to beat their chest at the other monkey on the greener side of the cage.

it's just like anything tho, some of the sickest cats, with the most skills, they're not getting the most paper. and some of the most average and below average cats are.
that angers people.
same with rap, some of the slickest are deep underground, and tho some of them want to have mass appeal, that's not how the system works.
skills don't always = success.
there will always be a backlash to that within the culture.
but as disgusted as i am with cats with no skills getting mega dough, i'm also equally disgusted with cats who do nothing but run their mouth about others.

True but theres a BIG difference between the competitive nature of the history of DJing where cats actually battled and proved it, and just shit talking about a DJ because he uses serato and not traktor

One thing i've noticed is its usually the part timers or NO timers doing this, before i got a weekly I was guilty of being that guy just sitting there judging the DJ analyzing everything he did and how much better i would do it. Now that I know how it feels to actually go through the motions of EVERY thurs fri and sat for a year i dont really ever do it anymore. A dj could straight train wreck and if i even noticed i would think aww maybe he's having a rare off day who cares, sometimes you just have shit goin on and it catches up to you, theres alot of wear and tear physically and mentally with this shit

Me and my homies talk about this all the time. 99% of the time the people doing the hating are the midlevel DJs.. The ones who barely scrap for gigs. Noobs are humble and happy to learn, watch and take notes and guys with a steady flow of work have no need to hate. Dog eat Dog.

I believe with the advances of technology making DJing cheaper and easy to access ANY music has made the DJ community every man for himself.
In vinyl days it was rare for one DJ to have EVERYTHING, unless you were the hottest DJ on the radio. So you partnered up with other DJ's who had the records you didn't have. Like you'd spin all the current radio hits and your boy would spin reggae and old school. Or you'd have a whole crew and everybody would combine their records to have the ultimate collection.
And when you'd go to the record store you'd often bump into other DJ's and chop it up with them. If you were a part of a record pool you'd often meetup at a certain spot with all the other DJ's in the pool and chop it up with them as well.
Back in vinyl days you had to network with other DJ's and you got to know many DJ's on a personal level which created a community of mutual respect. Now with cheaper equipment and access to ANY music you dont have to network with any DJ's.

The popularity of turntablism and battling in the 90's also really shut up many haters.

It was easier to get clowned for talking shit during the tablist days. Remember the old qbert forums...
DJ A: Hey. You suck at scratching.
DJ B: ORLY? POST A FILE!
You always had to show and prove. Nowadays, Walk DJ's talk shit and hide behind computers and private twitter profiles. LOL

My approach in recent time is to embrace haters. It's ironic. Many DJ's who I helped become successful in the past decade hate on me now. It doesn't truly matter if you show a DJ how to beatmatch or gave them an opening slot at a club, The majority will talk shit about you regardless when they are on the come up. It hasnt changed in my 20 years of DJing. DJing is a lot like High School. It's all cliques, who's cool and who is isnt.

I think another part is all the effort put in to something and going to a spot you think will be cool, but the DJ sucks and you know he's getting paid nice money... or you know he is only DJ'n cause he's DJ'n for nothing ($$$).

Competition is always gonna be around in any competative field so I dont know why anyone gets so butt hurt. Though there are people who moan and bitch who aint much better though. I no longer take notice of the DJ when Im in a club, I try to tune out from listening to the mix/blending/scratching and just enjoy myself. Pesonally I like to get along with dj's in person. You always learn new shit. I have had the dj negativity towards me. First I was pissed and it would mess my game up. Then I fed on it to step my game and practice up. Now that I have several setups in multiple venues the same peeps ask for work. One even says he will do it for free.
I used the negativity as a tool to better myself.
I enjoy nothing more than spinning and watching someone else tear it up too.
Although I am a hater of someone that presents himself as an ignorant stuck up dj thats too good to talk to you. I will trash talk, point out mistakes and laugh at the autosync button used until he gets off his high horse and comes down to earth. Then I can befriend him.
Numerous times experience from practice and hard work has shown through proving better skills. I would rather a fellow dj say that was a tight set than point out all the mishaps.
By far I have off days that take a good 20 minutes to get on track. By the time you put together a whole setup and rush to get ish done its 8pm and time to start. My mind is usually a mess making sure I have every t crossed.
So be it... Its in every single dj's second nature to find faults and mistakes. I personally listen carefully to transitions. If its a wreck I keep it to myself. If its a huge wreck I might give the damn what happened look.

Disco Dj's battled? (please don't give me the technical answer of the original DMC's)
I'm talking about all forms of Djing, not just the Hip Hop scratch off's. Like I said, from sound systems to exclusive records that's always been some sort of competition to what Proto j was saying about Dj's with no gig that night in your club criticizing everything you do. It take a diffferent shape in today's scene (Serato vs. Traktor/fashion accessory Dj's that you mentioned) but it's always been there, always... some of you just haven't been around long enough to see it.

I think the reason being is most of us who grew up in the vinyl days get so annoyed with what's going on today that our nostalgia plays tricks on us, remembering only the good part of it all.
Hey 20 years ago I was just a kid (literally) not old enough to get in anywhere, but because i was a good enough Dj and attached to some big promoters everyone looked the other way. I also remember how community oriented the club scene was in terms of all the bar girls, dancers, bouncers, Dj's knowing each other, going for chinese at 5am after the club... and I really miss that, but that's because I was a wide eyed kid... and then I also remember it was only like that because there weren't as many places to play, good luck trying to play half the shit we get away with now in a big room/money spot in the late 80's/early 90's.

Economy is tuff right now around my area DJ's are grinding hard. If you don't get out there and let yourself be heard you never will. Alot of the time it's the connections that get u further then you need to be. Skills do not matter in this game anymore that is hardly needed anymore. I don't really see it as a way of hate but more like a fight to win that bread. Only dj's that give a fuck about me are my dj friends. Other dj's have no love for me and I know why cause I'm an experienced dj with years of talent but I don't go hating on other dj's or bashing others to make myself look better my skills show that. You need to be bigger than that and always have a positive attitude eventhough u know u are better than someone else.

Oh man its painful. I sometimes do birthdays/engagements etc for some etra money but I have started to turn down a few because I seriously despise playing all the garbage in the charts now, I just dont enjoy it. for me, "I hate those who hates me, they are my biggest fan. why? because they keep on wasting their time just to watch my every single move." hahaha...
but for me personally, the best thing that you can do is just to be OPEN in everything. if you DJ so great, then be humble and kind. if you really DJ so so great. then share that talent to others.. have you watched the movie pay it forward? it is really great. don't mind those people who hates you, after all they are not the ones who gaves you food to eat, air to breath, and water to drink.. and most of all, don't think of any revenge. just let them do their part on this world.. In my place, there are DJ's who hates other DJ's due to the way they play music, the setup, the scratch and even the way they drink the beer.. Lolz! but for me, entertaining things like that makes you upset and will lose your focus. why don't you smile and give them your warmest appreciation. as what BEP said. "where is the love?" make peace on earth. that's the very beautiful thing to do..

i remember when it was a big no no to walk into a club and talk shit on the dj to the owner/manager/promoter and try to take his gig. it seems that this is pretty commonplace now.

*without reading whole thread*
I think its because a lot of dj's have to have the "I'm the best in the whole city/area" mentality (whether true or not true) to help promote themselves and find work. If you start telling people that, then find out another DJ is telling people the same thing...you all are obviously going to clash.
I don't have any problem with anyone, as long as their set SOUNDS good. DJ I've worked with before cant cut, mix, or anything else even near on beat....hence let the hate commence.

mixcould does not offer downloads. that's the whole point of promotional mixes is for ppl to download them. mixcloud is useless except for streaming.

so post in on a file sharing webstie, then post it on mixcloud, and add the DL link to mixclouds comment. you coukld even skip mixcloud if all you want is for people to download it and just post the DL link.
personaly i dont like to download mixes, thats why i like the optioin to stream them

some dj's think anyone choosing products they dont like is a direct insult against their person, their family, and their ancestors.
so yeah, like i said earlier. its all about insecurity imo

that's actually a good idea about using the comments area. I do not like the option of streaming sometimes because i'd rather skip to the dj's transitions to see if it's even worth listening to. If it's a bad mix then im just not going to listen to it. I'm all about quality and I don't hear that then im not interested.
