Basic: Can I use an SL1 box hooked into the TTM 57SL so that TWO laptops running

DJ Trinitron 6:38 AM - 14 January, 2011
serato can be used AT THE SAME TIME? There are a lot of DJ's here that use Serato, so when we are changing sets there's always some jimmy rig, or grabbing vinyl in order to not stop the music while we change USB from one laptop to the other. So will SL1 box hooked into the TTM 57SL solve this problem? So maybe me and someone else can play like a 2 x 4 with us BOTH using serato via laptop...It would maybe be worth the investment to solve the aggravation, and carry less crap around.

yes
KingxD 1:18 AM - 26 January, 2011
how would you hook this up?
radikarl 7:14 AM - 26 January, 2011
set the dip switches on the back of the 57 to
phono-line-phono-line.

now:
turntables go into SL-1 as usual
line outs and thru outs from SL-1 go into ttm 57 line ins and phono ins as usual
(same as with a regular mixer).

now you can select with the source select knobs on the 57 for each channel

left:
analog 1: vinyl
analog 2: scratchlive channel 1 from SL1 (LAPTOP A)
digital 1: scratchlive channel 1 from 57 (LAPTOP B)
digital 2: (don't use)

right:
analog 3: vinyl
analog 4: scratchlive channel 2 from SL1 (LAPTOP A)
digital 1: (don't use)
digital 2: scratchlive channel 2 from 57 (LAPTOP B)

Does this really work? I wanna try this.
radikarl 6:19 AM - 27 January, 2011
why shouldn't it? the 57 is not only a scratchlive device but also a regular mixer. so you can use it for the SL-1 just as any regular mixer. plus it comes with ScratchLive option.

of course it works.

Cool I'm trying this at my gig tomorrow. Thanks for posting instructions with such clarity.

I am running an Sl3 box into the Rane57 to run two computers as well. Do i need to set the switches to phono-line-phono-line? I ask because i am also running Cdj's in channel 2 and 4, so if i can run line-line-line-line i wont have to be moving the switches during the gig. It seems to work but is there a reason i should not be running it this way?
radikarl 11:31 AM - 29 January, 2011
the SL 3 has combined line outputs/throughputs, so it only needs two line ins,
for the other two you are free in your choice
Dj Tropic 11:56 PM - 29 January, 2011
Thank you radikarl! It worked like a charm! The only thing I noticed was when the gig was over my friend that had his computer hooked up the SL1 disconnected so did mines connected the 57SL. Would you know why?
Dj Tropic 1:12 AM - 30 January, 2011
Now that I think about it, it was because we didn't have a power source ran to the SL1. Once we removed the USB it powered down. (Maybe)

So as far as recording your set with the 57 / sl1 hooked up, will the laptop hooked up to the 57 be my primary to record ?

Yes

okay here is my question could i use the rane 57 as my mixer and sound card along side an sl1 box on the same mac running scratch live to give the option of 4 decks in the same way the sl4 provides?

hopefully this makes sense
radikarl 9:58 PM - 15 April, 2011
no.

even if you could, the 57 still is only a 2 channel mixer...
The All Dancing Dj 10:02 PM - 15 April, 2011
okay many thanks so the only possible way to run more than 2 decs is to have either sl3 sl4 or rane 68?
radikarl 10:07 PM - 15 April, 2011
yes. that is the only way

but you know you can always "instant double" to the sample player slots with "drag and drop" , and therefore free up one of your decks.
The All Dancing Dj 10:10 PM - 15 April, 2011
no i was not aware of this would you mind explaining a little more on this please

thanks
radikarl 10:23 PM - 15 April, 2011
read this:
serato.com

then read this:
serato.com

short form:
go to setup.
go to plugins tab
enable SP-6 sample player if not already done
go to playback tab
enable "instant doubles" if not already done.
return from setup
klick on the SP6 button below the left deck, so the sample player is visible.
make sure the sample player outputs to all channels
now drag a track running on one of your decks to a sample player slot.
stop the deck
music keeps playing but deck is free to use.

if you are in a loop, the loop is activated in the sampler slot as well.

or if you are really lazy, just watch this video by Konix, and do the same but with the sampler: Watchwww.youtube.com

sweet man very helpfull, to ask a final question, i recently purchased a hercules mk4, while i am aware i cannot map all the functions to scratch live i.e platters and pitch sliders, i would like to use it to controll the sample player is this possible?

if so would i be able to use it in conjunction with my dicers,

finally if all this is possible i have one final issue i have only been able to have the hercules activated if i have the crappy free virtual dj software open is ther a way round this!

sorry to be a pain with the questions

thanks
radikarl 10:35 PM - 15 April, 2011
sorry i don't know that hercules device.
in general, you can map pitch sliders when you play in internal mode, they are only useful in that mode.

the sample player is always in internal mode.

you can definitely control the sampler via midi.

just make sure you have all of the options visible by checking them in this menu which is on the right side of the sample player:
serato.com

(source: serato.com YOU SHOULD READ THIS, DUDE ;-) )

now when you have all the options visible, you can map e.g. the pitch slider of a sampler slot and the bend buttons to a midi device.

can I do the same as this:
set the dip switches on the back of the 57 to
phono-line-phono-line.

now:
turntables go into SL-1 as usual
line outs and thru outs from SL-1 go into ttm 57 line ins and phono ins as usual

BUT.... not connect the vinyl/through RCA's? The club I play at has an issue with one of the RCA jacks on the TTM, and can't be used on one of the channels.
DABBLER 5:03 AM - 23 April, 2011
and the answer is - you can't. THRU is needed for the laptop that is wired direct to the TTM
