Beatgrid vs warping which works better

Trinicapone 12:58 AM - 26 November, 2010
While I was working on my old school set I noticed that NOTHING can be beat matched! Ex: Love Thang by First Choice bpm 110.8 Shake Your Body by MJ bpm 117.8
Now this is not rocket science here I done this mix many times b4 if I have MJ in serato and First Choice in the bridge I cannot get them to mix they both drift. So I put them both in serato and it's the same thing. What happen? So do I warp it or do I clean up the beat grid where do I go with it

Well it depends on what you do better :-) For me it's quicker to go and warp and create a strait new mp3 with AL. The key is always what is easyer to you. Warp them and send them back to SSL and set the beatgrid on the first beat and your done.
To check it load both as a clip and play them if they are on just set your BPM speed and write them out. The nice sideeffect no more 117.8 BPM just 117 or 118 Now it will sync with every beat in AL.
For sure AL has the more powerfull Warp tool as it is a DAW but SSL can do it also very good but I need more time in SSL to get it done. But that is just me :-)

Yea I watch that little video on beatgrid and its alll finally making sense. I too find AL is much easer to use. But I love my CDJs. Just need to get everything working together. Once again thanks Latino :-)

for me, using beatgrids is way easier, i mean way easier... but on the same hand, even when i hit sync sometimes the clip in ableton will have a hard time syncing up... i dont know why!!
Dj Ace 6:31 AM - 8 January, 2011
you have to warp and use beatgrids
Dj Ace 6:32 AM - 8 January, 2011
works thbe best..but dj latino has a good method also!
djgrits7 6:14 PM - 17 January, 2011
as long as you get the downbeat correct in ableton, and hit warp from here, assuming your beatgrids are down pat, shouldn't u basically be all good to go?
Dj Ace 7:37 PM - 17 January, 2011
yup
djgrits7 4:13 PM - 1 February, 2011
perfect, i was so lost on this ableton warping stuff but i'm gettin the hang of it more and more, i still have to nudge it up a bit when using sync 1 or sync 2 just cuz maybe my warpers aren't exact but it's close enuff for me for the most part, atleast just practicing at home..

although, one question i do have, how do you move one warp marker or transient line to line up with the downbeat or bar phrase, bu then the next transient warp marker moves with it to so that's off... how do you fix that? thanks!!

I have this same problem too. I'v tried to solve this in ableton and SSL. I'll mark a down beat and then fallow along and find a drift off the beat grid. When i find this i try to fix this but when i do this the ALL the beat grid moves and cause the down beat to move off beat?
Dj Ace 1:11 PM - 21 February, 2011
Don't "slip" the grid just "move" the marker in SSL
Dj Ace 1:12 PM - 21 February, 2011
if you slip it it will move all of the warp makers but if you just move then the it will only effect one of them. Look at the Serato Beatgrids Video again...

I'm going to continue to look, but are they keyboard shortcuts for "slip" and "move" for beatgrids?
Dj Ace 2:50 AM - 22 February, 2011
yes...

You are wanting to 'Adjust' the Beatgrid. This will expand or contract the entire beatgrid after the last set Beatgrid Marker (o (often this will be the Downbeat ie. first beat of the track).

If your track is wavering tempo, you may need to Set a Beat Marker (in Beatgrid Edit Mode this will be pressing X). You can do this several times.

To expand or contract the grid while leaving the Grid Markers where they are, then in Grid Edit Mode simply press the left or right arrow keys...

You will get used to what tracks are wavering, or static and requiring setting more markers, or slipping or adjusting. But it requires you to see what is happing, so can be a little hard to explain.

Can you guys in Serato show some type of video on this
djgrits7 9:33 PM - 4 March, 2011
how bout in ableton? i can move the transient line separately but then it doesn't line up with the bar, etc...

Hey guys, i have set up some beat grids on a few old tracks that fluctuate is tempo, it is all gridded correctly, but it seems like the grid was no effect on the original speed of the track, is this right?

I'm not using this feature to sync Ableton, just to straighten out a few old songs so they have a consistent tempo.

The beat grid is not like warping a track in Ableton. SSL just plays the file as is. The grid is solely telling Live what to do in order to sync with the playing track.

If you want to tighten up those tracks, warp them in Ableton then export a new file. If you output to a lossless format you shouldn't lose quality.
