Man i remember it was a ghetto channel that played nothin but music videos and you can call in and request songs and crap? They always played hiphop songs tho, and more hardcore ones that mtv would play at the time. I think this was in the early /mid 90's. anyone remember?!
Music was better then i swear. now i am not sure if i like hiphop music any more, most of the time i listen to songs to see if they will make it mainstream, not to actually enjoy them in my own time. That is sad. its like DJing is a curse sometimes, you learn to really hate songs and want to slap chics for requesting CRAP like Pretty Ricky - Hotline. I fucking hate that song so much. or "can you play the gwen bananas song?" THATS NOT ITS FUCKING NAME! The best is "can you play a song for me, i dont remember what its called tho".
This topic shifted alot lol. I guess i felt nostalgic and bitter lol.

The channel existed in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s, but was eventually purchased by Viacom and merged into MTV2. The channel was initially a product of the Miami Music scene, hosted by local Miami Bass rappers known as Miami Boyz. The Box is a shortened term as the channel was originally named Video Jukebox.
Founder and former owner Steve Peters began a short-lived record label from the earnings of Video Jukebox entitled Peter's Records, but despite having his foot in the local Miami Bass scene, and employing Hip-Hop producers from abroad, he never managed to find a hit record and ended the label before The Box was sold. Some cities in the U.S. had terrestrial (over-the-air) transmitters for The Box and later MTV2, but many have now been sold off as of 2005.

i always wondered if i called in, if they would actually play my video. lol. I just figured they would play it eventually, and if you watched it for an hour, chances are they would play your video anyways haha.
MTV got so gay, and still is, it never actually has music videos playing, Just horribly scripted shows about dating.
Too bad the box cant come back...

I think we should get MTV2 to Bring back The Box Music network back to television this year together because we all music missed our favorite music videos from Past, Present and future so let's just give it a try once more.

I was a lucky 23 year old who got to work at the Video Jukebox Network back in 1987 as a broadcast engineer. I then ended uphelp launching over 170 channels around the USA in to local cable companies and on Low Power UHF channels. We were one of the first company's to introduce interactive to the television. I later took the newly name network THE BOX and launch it in over 55 location in the United Kingdom then on in to the Netherlands.
Seeing this thread after so long ago is very cool. I love the channel I worked there for over 13 years . I am glad to see that a few of you still remember what we did.
Peace..

Mannnnn, I was just thinking of 'The Box' & wandered if it was even still around. I Googled it & found this thread. Had no idea they became Mtv2. What a shame. I used to live in Bowie, Msryland in 1997 & stayed on that channel. Remember when nobody would call in, it would play like the first like 5 seconds of every song that had just came out & was popular. It would cycle that over & over till someone requested a song. Then I would have all those sound bytes on my head playing in that exact same order all day... It was comforting for some reason. Sometimes I'll have flashbacks to then when I hear a song that came out in '97 & I remember the cycle that was playing back then. What a kewl channel. Too bad it's not around no more.

When you think about it - The Box was like Youtube before Hi Speed Internet when everybody was on dial up.
Concept was way ahead of it's time but was pretty damn cool - think On Demand movie rentals today (like Netflix or Pay Per View) except for Music Videos...
Wonder if they made any "real" money back then??
