The essence of Itch's greatness is in it's fast evolution due to the fact that it is software based. But Tracktor is becoming a real competitor with the S4 4 channel mixer and the ability to connect tables or CDJs with time coded records and CDs just like scratch. This progression has almost combined the software controls of itch with the hardware controls of scratch, making S4 with Tractor a real competitor.
With a fairly simple software update Itch could upgrade the NS7 and NS7FX into a 4 deck control system with Numark's 45Record/Slipmat/Motor innovation. Making the NS7 the obvious choice over NI's S4. The potential new software action for each hardware function is listed below.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------
Toggle:
One hardware function needs to be reprogrammed on each deck to act as a toggle between Deck A/C (left) and Deck B/D (right). If the reverse toggle is software controlled and not directly wired to the motor it would be the perfect feature to reprogram. The centre position would enable deck A and the down position would enable deck C. (Same on the right middle for B and down for D).
Load A/Load B:
"Load A" would pertain to Deck C when Deck C is toggled on, and "Load B" would pertain to Deck D when Deck D is toggled on.
Pitch Control/Range:
The tempo of C would be permanently synced to A (and D synced to B) so the pitch control and Range would act as a master pitch control for A/C and B/D respectfully.
EQ and Volume:
The EQ and volume could be directly-linked or Software-style-linked to their primary Decks A and B. The EQ and Volume of the secondary decks C and D would be software-style-linked, they would have to be displayed on the screen. The Volume and EQ levels would remain the same until each individual knob and slider was moved setting each EQ range and Volume to a new position. If Decks A and B were linked in a similar soft-ware style toggling back and forth between A/C and B/D would be seamless.
Cross Fader:
would used to fade between C and D if needed
Cue Points 1/2/3/4/5:
will toggle over seamlessly
SYNC/CUE/PLAY/(Play/Pause)/Platters
These functions will toggle over seamlessly (the platter will stop or start spinning when u toggle depending if (Play/Pause) is on or off on the deck one is toggling to. (this means there will be a second of time when you can't use the platter if you are transferring from A(paused) to B(play) as the platter will take a second to reach speed but the song will continue seamlessly. (just like pressing and holding a cue and then hitting play).
Pitch Bend:
will toggle over seamlessly
Bleep:
will be functional for Decks A and B only
Start Time/ Stop Time:
Will be master for A/C and B/D respectfully
Tap:
will toggle over seamlessly
Track:
will toggle over seamlessly
Strip Search:
will toggle over seamlessly
Loop Control:
will toggle over seamlessly
NS7FX - Source:
Users would have the choice to enable or disable 4 Deck FX controls. If enabled AUX would affect C, and MAIN would affect D.
NS7FX - FX SELECT/FX MIX/FX PARAM/FX ONOFF/TAP:
will toggle over seamlessly
----------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------
This slight software update would make the NS7 competitive with Native Instrument's S4 for Tractor, and would keep Itch users satisfied and prevent from having any reason to switch to Tractor with S4. Club Djs would still have full incentive to buy V7s with a four track analog or direct/digital mixer do avoid the hassle and feature loss of switching/toggling between decks. But less serious Djs would still have the option of 4 deck mixing using Numark's amazing innovation of the 45Record/slipmat/motor platters. Making Serato Itch with the NS7 of NS7FX the clear choice over Tractor with the S4.
Make us proud Serato!

*This upgrade would make the NS7 competitive with tractor S4, when comparing based on 4 deck mixing. (S4 still has sampling controls over Itch, but the Bridge for itch will supply ample competition in way of sampling and looping once it comes out).

just so you know the last official word was ' 4 decks on other controllers is not possible currently but not out of the question ' --- or something like that
or maybe it was 4 decks with 2 controllers

Cool this is just a suggestion on how they could go about re-mapping the NS7. I'm curious to see how many other people would be interested in having 4 Deck control

It's a valid proposal, +1.
However, given it's 2 years on the market, the NS7 could be ripe for a major refresh (FX+4 decks+other goods), so a revamp of the old unit thru a functions remapping could be highly unlikely.

4 deck ability is one main reason I began using Itch, also because it is a Serato product. Ther screenshot of itch 1.7 shows 4 decks, but is not so when installed using 2 numark v7 decks. Am a patient man and very confident Serato will come through.

I love Serato too and I hope they don't let us down, I feel a bit like Itch IS the future, but the patience of Itch users is being tested, it is clear that ITCH is treated as second class to Scratch but people aren't using ITCH to fool around. Eventually consumers will get fed up and start using other options like S4 if ITCH continues to fall a year behind Scratch (The Bridge and Video SL). We are patient but we are also consumers who make choices based on price, competition and service. We love Serato but if ITCH continues to be treated as second best Serato will continue to lose customers. Don't let us down Serato. :) Make us Proud! :)
Is that a +1 for 4 deck mixing (D Man)?

+1 on everything you said. I own a VCI-300 and an NS7 and just pre-ordered an S4 (so one of the other two will go up for sale soon). 4 deck mixing has become very popular largely due to great software. Traktor Pro has pushed this feature and now we have SL3 and Itch came out with the DX. The thing with that is you only ONE option to use 4 decks with Itch, and that’s a DX. So have to give up touch sensitive jogs in order to gain 4 decks. I think the S4 came up with a great idea with the sampler banks where you can pull 32 count loops directly off a song while playing. Tons on possibilities. My only hesitation of The Bridge being Itch’s multi deck solution is that you have to 1. Buy Ableton and 2. Learn how to use a second software. Having extra decks 3 and 4 on a platform like the NS7 would solve TONS of issues.
Only catch I will say is that playing 4 decks on a 2 channel mixer sometimes can cause confusion. Hence the recent development of quite a few 4 channel midi controllers. Def. +1 on this feature though. Opens up more possibilities and doesn’t limit you.

Right on i love serato too. Thats why i made the choice i did. Was under the impression it was to be like scratch live but for use with controllers in place of time code discs. When now it does seem like a secondary product. Ultimately I LOVE SERATO so I will keep faith for as long as possible. Especially with the bridge coming in 2011. Hopefully soon after vsl plugin.

In my case I am using 2 V7's, also have an X7 mixer on pre order. So 4 decks should be possible. Using both sets of outputs on both V7 controllers. With a 4 chanel mixer (Numark X7) it should be reality. Especially with the deck select on the V7's. In time I am very confident we will all be happy. That's because Serato ROCKS!!!

^ something like that should be very do-able. Especially using a 4 channel mixer.
However, 4 channels on a 2 channel mixer can cause some screw ups. Especially after having a handful of drinks :-)

I feel ya on that... Thats why I chose to go with the four chanel mixer. Anticipating four decks on the 1.7 upgrade made my decision clear. Worst case come out with an Itch Pro version and charge a reasonable upgrade fee. If that is what it takes to make Itch the best it can be for working jocks.

Afterall working jocks are the real users, and target market. The closet dj's (God Bless them all) are the best non working dj's that wine too much. Not being rude just real. So maybe a Pro version is the answer to better serve the customers that depend on their gear to make a living.

I don't think Serato would mention or promote 4 decks in up coming versions of Itch unless they were serious. So I will patiently wait for Itch to evolve into the best it can be. In the mean time I will proudly use Itch the way it is. After all have had zero problems and am very pleased with all features and functions within Itch.

Q: Does TRAKTOR KONTROL S4 also allow external timecode control through turntables and CD decks? Does it work with the TRAKTOR SCRATCH PRO / DUO software?
A: TRAKTOR KONTROL S4 will not support external timecode control directly after its release, neither with the included software nor in combination with TRAKTOR SCRATCH PRO/DUO. But external timecode control will be enabled in TRAKTOR KONTROL S4 through a software upgrade in the near future.

you guys bash auto sync which s a feature in Itch that BTW - Itch has a MUCH better gridding feature allowing for better Snyc'ing. Also Itch has the DX for 4 deck mixing, and Im sure those DJ's using that equipment find it useful.
Crawl outside of your box - there's much more than two decks and two channel mixer out there. And yes 99% of the people using the S4 will only use two decks ----- because that's what its meant for. 2 decks and EIGHT 32 beat sample banks...that are SYNC'd Thats the default setting.

looks very attractive to me if i was an EDM DJ, i think it will have a very good quorum in the EDM scene, Traktor is well known by its superb sound FX and in my opinion i'd carry 100 times an S4 in my bag thats perfectly desgined to control everything with a 1 to 1 mapping than using random controllers, kontrol x1, timecode, all that crap, but for my music style i wouldnt take advantage of that nice piece of gear.

The real problem will arise only when a well programmed AI will auto-update its music library, check the dancefloor status via sensors and decide with self-fine-tuning euristics which song to play next, achieving programmed intermediate goals like keeping the dancefloor full and moving, building a set with well-engineered ups and downs..

The superstar status would then shift from the DJ to the "programmer" (who will be able to "perform" with his AI in hundreds or thousands locations simultaneously), in the same way musician's superstar status already partly shifted to DJs.

Welcome to the future. This paper is 5 years old.
Introduction
Many radio stations and nightclubs employ Disk-Jockeys (DJs) to provide a
continuous uninterrupted stream or “mix” of dance music, built from a sequence of
individual song-tracks. In the last decade, commercial pre-recorded compilation
audio CDs of DJ mixes have become a significant growth market. DJs exercise skill
in deciding an appropriate sequence of tracks and in mixing 'seamlessly' from one
track to the next. Online access to large-scale archives of digitized music via
automated music information retrieval systems offers users the possibility of
discovering many songs that they like, but the majority of consumers are unlikely to
want to learn the DJ skills of sequencing and mixing, and even if they had such
skills, they may not have the time to devote to the mixing task. This chapter starts
with a description of hpDJ, an automatic DJ system in which compilations of dance2
music can be sequenced and seamlessly mixed by computer, with minimal user
involvement. The user may specify a selection of tracks, and may give a qualitative
indication of the type of mix required. The resultant mix can be presented as a
continuous single digital audio file, whether for burning to CD, or for play-out from
a personal playback device such as an iPod, or for play-out to rooms full of dancers
in a nightclub. Results from an early version of this system have been tested on an
audience of patrons in a London nightclub, with very favourable results. Subsequent
to that experiment, we designed technologies that allow the hpDJ system to monitor
the responses of crowds of dancers (or listeners), so that hpDJ can dynamically react
to those responses from the crowd. The initial intention was that hpDJ would
monitor the crowd’s reaction to the song-track currently being played, and use that
response to guide its selection of subsequent song-tracks in the mix. In that version,
it was assumed that all the song-tracks existed in some archive or library of prerecorded
files. However, once reliable crowd-monitoring technology is available, it
becomes possible to use the crowd-response data to dynamically “remix” existing
song-tracks (i.e, alter the track in some way, tailoring it to the response of the
crowd) and even to dynamically “compose” new song-tracks suited to that crowd.
Thus, the music played by hpDJ to any particular crowd of listeners on any
particular night becomes a direct function of that particular crowd’s particular
responses on that particular night. On a different night, the same crowd of people
might react in a different way, thereby leading hpDJ to create different music. Thus,
the music composed and played by hpDJ could be viewed as an emergent property
of the dynamic interaction between the computer system and the crowd, and the
crowd could then be viewed as having collectively collaborated on composing the
music that was played on that night, but the act of collaboration is also one of
consumption: it’s the crowd’s appreciation of currently-playing music that leads
hpDJ to create the next piece of music. This en masse collective composition raises
some interesting legal issues regarding the ownership of the composition (i.e.: who,
exactly, is the author of the work?), but revenue-generating businesses can
nevertheless plausibly be built from such technologies.

Exactly. Only, to be as adaptive as a human DJ, the system would need awesome picture-to-dancefloor status algoritms and ultimately its "music taste" will only be as good as its programmer's.
So, it may turn out to be just a improved, adaptive version of a mixtape, until a proper AI will be invented.

Good counter arguments but its still an easier task and accessible to more people than say beatmatching and mixing by ear (no wave forms or syncing)
By the way, on another note, I am loving the bridge coz the ableton live sets add alot of dope drum tracks and loops to my set sooo....onward to the future or to the demise of the DJ!

Warning, long winded rant coming...
I know that this will open the floodgates of haterz, but DJs are NOT musicians; DJs are entertainers. While you can argue about turntablism (which IMHO is a musical artform), most do not aspire to have those skills. ALL DJs, however, DO aspire to rock crowds - which entertainers do are known to do.
Professionalism is another topic altogether. For the sake of simplicity, let's say that DJs who charge money for their services are professional. Unfortunately (IMHO), DJs aren't judged by the creativity that they themselves bring to a show, they're judged on music selection (80%), energy level (15%), and presentation (5%).
All of that being said, people only notice the value of DJs when they AREN'T THERE! In most people's minds, having ANY DJ is better than just listening to a CD or iPod... so I don't believe that the demand for DJs will go down anytime soon.

I in general DJ's are not musicians. (I have seen some guys "play" some neat equipment and DJ). But along the lines of being an entertainer I think the good DJ's are definetly artists. The routines that Kraze and Shiftee have posted up are sick, and this is not just turntablism - but being creative with a tool set, and the song selection, what to sample, when to cut a song, when to kill the lows, etc. combining that all together for presentation is an art. That set, vibe, etc. is all CREATED by the DJ (if they're good). That to me is an art.
Somone just glueing the end of one song to the begining of another and making a smoothe tranistion is not really an artist nor a musician in my book. But still a DJ none the less.

This is true but the average club patron, or music lover will not be able to tell the difference between artistic and regular dj...auto sync is just one feature that makes non musical people devalue the DJ. blending and mixing by EAR take musical talent and a trained ear

+1 on the 4 dex, signed up just to say that! Would be bollics if they brought out a new unit, made you spend more money, or upgraded from the NS7, as per the first post, a little re mapping and we could be using 4 dex with NS7 and NSFX....
ComeOn Serato!!!! The people are asking.... delivery please

with four decks especially of using a unit with only deck control would require autosync...

Well FUuuuuuuuuuuuuuCK :( lol
Well everyone I started this thread with a cool Idea... and they did it... but in a new product... we are all officially outdated but life goes on. :)
Once the Bridge comes out those of us rockin the NS7 will have essentially 3 track control with an APC40.
Im surprised they nixed the vinyl control tho. We have that to hold on too. :) (no pun intended).
I just hope the NS7 case fits the NS6.
And it looks like the idea of the NS6 is that it will be "socially excepted in the DJ world as a Pro controller which translates to more street cred for are dear NS7s.
Cheers

I just hope the NS7 case fits the NS6.
I believe the NS6 is considerably smaller than the NS7. at least, that's the impression I get from images and video when I compare it with my NS7. So, the likeliness of it fitting isn't so much the question as it is the likeliness of it supporting it.
Not doable on the NS7, it would be a total mess.
I personally never use the fader start. Ever. If I could map those two be the 4 deck switching options (Deck A Fader Start becomes Deck A/C switch and likewise for Deck B becoming Deck B/D switch), then let the party roll.

You can DJ with 4 decks. you just need 2 laptops.
They was a two week period where I didn't have both my V7s. I practiced DJing with one V7 at home. It wasn't that hard, only thing I could complain about was not being able to apply effects on both tracks at the same time. There were some other issues, but Im keeping this post short.

The NS7 and V7's still have the possibility of 4 deck support, just possibly NOT with ITCH or Serato based software.
Thankfully other manufacturers may be filling that slot or is filling that slot now.
VDJ and Now Torq 2 does exactly that.
I truly believe, if the demand is there, it will be filled.
I gave up the hope of that particular feature being provided by Serato in the near future considering the current track record, but I am enlightened by what other manufacturers are doing for the NS7 and V7.

Precisely, the NS7 always could do 4 deck support. I knew that already from using it with Traktor.
I just never used 4 deck mode for platter control. My setup in Traktor is two decks, mic effect panel (Deck C) and Sample player (Deck D).
All this it can't be done is plain rubbish, it's simply not true.
I don't to manage two collection databases. Period. Looking at things that's the way it might have to be for awhile because Itch is not living up to what it was supposed to be right now.
It's good the Itch and SSL share databases but the GUI format is so different between the two and Itch is so vanilla that it is very crippling if you are using DVS normally.
I could on and on, but I won't. This needs to get rectified.
My humble opinion is stop making more work by trying to up keep two platforms and just support controllers in SSL and done.
Everything is already there, internal mixing capability, video, bridge, sp-6, dj-fx....
I honestly think it will take until the end of the year to shoehorn all that into Itch opposed to adding platter control and map all the controls of the NS7/V7 into SSL.
What is even more interesting is SSL supports the VFX-1 for controlling effects.
That didn't take that long.... HMMMMMMMM

I personally have given up on the fantasy of 4 deck control with the V7's on Itch. So am waiting to see what the best 4 deck controller will be. Then just upgrade. I will say the Pioneer DDJ T1 is looking promising as well as the Numark NS6. Traktor or Itch??? descisions............hmmm

it is lookin like Pioneer and Traktor might have the winning combo the effects are sick can stack 3 effects per deck (4 decks) haven't liked traktor all these years but they have stepped their game up. I love serato and would hate to change but will if the best happens to be something else
