Is 120gb enough?

I try rip all my music to 192kbps, along with tracks from digiwaxx and breakin-records. My 80 gig laptop hd is full but only with about 20gigs of music, the rest is program files (music production apps and office)
Does anyone find 120 is not enough for a PURELY MP3 drive...no documents, images, video, wavs or aiffs, and no porn?

Wish I would've followed this rule! I got a 400gig Seagate I can't seem to 100% fill up yet.
Friend of mine has one too and he's got like 23,000 songs in it already!
LIKE WTF?

So B-Stee how many songs in that 20GB? And how many are you looking to carry in your drive? Then do the math from there.
I have a second internal of 80GB and will likely upgrade to a 160GB since my 4600+ songs have filled a little over 40GB so far.

Roughly 70,000 tracks fit on 400GB with nearly all at 192kbps VBR (some are higher, a few lower).
If you only do clubs or a single type of event/music then 120GB should be more than enough for a 'gigging' drive.
If you do a lot of different events, or events that have a broad selection of music (like weddings) then you'll likely need a bigger drive.
There is a limit on the amount of music you can take with you and actually use. I carry a lot of music with me but I'm mainly a mobile jock. I'm tempted to use a 100GB external I have for my 'club' work though. It would let me carry a LOT of music and not have to sift through Sinatra and jazz music to find that hot joint I want to drop next.

Basically it's all club work and the occasional private event. Mainly hip hop, pop and 80's. I think it's enough personally, but i see everyone else in the hd thread talkin bout they filled up their 250&300 gigs easily. Is it mostly wedding dj's doin that tho?

As soon as I switched to .wav -- I was packing the drive quick. and the sound quality is worth it since drives are (semi) cheap.

I doubt i'll be switching to wav anytime soon, just doesnt make sense since 192 is great sq and 320 almost completely inaudible difference from wav

The bigger the system-- the more your secret will get revealed. If you come on right after a cat playing vinyl, there will be a VERY obvious change in the sound (for the worst), not to mention if that dude was playing at a high volume and there isn't any more headroom, well then, you're basically FUCT.

If you have 5000 songs I wouldn’t go larger than 120 gb until you need it. If you are going to expand your library really fast, go larger... but try to figure out how long it takes you to get a gb.
consider this, I often go through my songs in itunes and try to take songs off my ipod to free up space. to take off 1 gb, it seems to take forever to find that many. if you put one song on your computer at a time. and not bulk amounts of cd's. you most likely dont need the largest hard drive you can find.
if you have around 5000 songs i'd go with 120 gb, and no larger that 250-300 (if you will have things other than music). i like my maxtor drive. also get one with ---FIREWIRE---

All things being equal... go for the bigger drive so you don't wish you had more space later.
Also isn't the Passport drive powered by the USB conector? I'd prefer not to add drain to the USB ports and use one with a separate power supply.
If you can have a larger internal that should be the first choice.

i'm going to use the other usb bus so i don't use up the bus power on ssl. I'm looking at it from a portability standpoint, and a set up time standpoint. The Laptop will be plugged in all the time so im not worrying about draining the laptop power.
Plus, I've dj'ed with a 20 gig 4500rpm external laptop hd with no problems, so i figure a 5400rpm would be fine.
And if i fill this one up and switch to a 3.5" drive...well i'll still find a good use for it.
FYI....Best buy has a sale on them for $99

I can't believe I do, but I disagree with you on this one Kagen. At my res on Fridays, me and two other kats mix together all night long. Of the three of us, there is one kat that "exclusively" spins on vinyl. He and I tag track for track sometimes, and there is no discernible difference in sound quality. It's all about knowing how to manipulate those e.q.'s., besides SSL has internal gain pots, plus you have the ones on the mixer itself. Sure it's a lot more work, but B-Stee is right, a properly encoded (purchased not ripped) mp3 @ 320, sounds up to par with most (if not all) vinyl records. I have bought wavs and I have played them with my 320's & vinyl.....and have come to the conclusion that they just aren't worth the size/storage factor.
I have a 120 GB passport that I rarely bring out.......the 100 GB on my lappy seems to be sufficient. Though, I primarily spin edm (breaks, house,DnB,trance)

I was gonna post in this thread yesterday and got hung up looking at the My World Book drives... that 1TB NAS jump off is MINE!!!
Anyway, if I were you I'd go with the new WD Passport 160 GB. It's the biggest they have right now and the 120 has done me well. It doesn't have firewire and is USB powered. I spin the same type of music you do and I have more than enough songs on that thing to spin just about any party (it's probably got 10 GB free). I have bigger drives at home for backups and archiving, but I can only imagine once I go and add more music to this thing (which WILL happen), I'll be going for the 160 as well (or the 200 if it's out by then).

I guess this is as good a time as any to ask this. Do you guys DELETE music or does it just hang around in a "Crap I Won't Ever Play" folder?

DeezNotes
3:19 PM - 1 March, 2007
There was a time when I didn't delete music at all. Even digiwaxx crap (I still have some). When it all comes down to it, I treat it all like vinyl. I still have some promo vinyls from years ago somewhere in my basement. So... those files are somewhere on one of my hard drives. It usually takes me a few years before I get rid of those records I never play.

Dj KaGeN

I cannot delete. Good - Bad - Really Bad - Not a bat's chance in hell bad.. it all stays. Color coding tracks makes it easy to find good stuff in a hurry. Someday, some stupid riff will come out from the dead and I'll have the orig from where it was taken. Or so I'm hoping.

MusicMeister
10:45 PM - 1 March, 2007
I don't delete... Because sometimes you get someone that comes in and asks for "I do both Jay and Jane" at a wedding completely out of the blue....
And YES, that REALLY happened....
Or when you'll suddenly want to drop Lil' Louis "French Kiss".... or Stella Soliel.... or... well you get the idea... sometimes you have some track that you have no right to be playing that just gets a request and will work with that you're dropping at the time....
But if I was doing club work I'd remove all my country, Rat Pack, Jazz, and other genre's that I'd never play from the drive I took to the club.
